Book excerpt: The history of Pawleys Island, South Carolina, can be summed up in four words: rice, sea, golf, and hammocks. The rivers threading through coastal South Carolina created an ideal environment for cultivating rice, and by the mid-18th century, vast plantations were producing profitable crops and wealthy landowners. But those plantations also produced malaria-carrying mosquitoes, so the landowners sent their families to the seashore for the summer and built the first houses on Pawleys Island starting in 1822. The end of slavery doomed the rice culture, and the old plantations were sold to rich Northerners for hunting and fishing retreats. By the 1960s, many of the old plantations were turned into golf courses, reviving the economy. But the beating heart of Pawleys Island remains the rhythm of the sea and what one early visitor called "the only beach in the world."

Book The Hundred Story Home

Download or read book The Hundred Story Home written by Kathy Izard and published by HarperChristian + ORM. This book was released on 2018-06-26 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What if you just trusted the whisper of calling placed on your heart? Kathy Izard was volunteering at Charlotte’s Urban Ministry Center when an unlikely meeting with a homeless man changed the course of her life. She realized that serving at the soup kitchen was feeding her soul, but not actually solving the needs of the homeless population. Rather than brush it off and avoid what she now felt called to take on, she quit her job and took on what seemed like an insurmountable task—building housing for Charlotte’s homeless. Woven together with this uplifting story of social action is Kathy’s personal struggle with faith, forgiveness and fulfillment. In telling her story, Kathy invites you to consider rewriting your own. What’s calling you? As crazy at it seems, it may be crazier not to try. This book will push you to do so much more than you ever thought possible.

Book Heaven Is a Beautiful Place

Download or read book Heaven Is a Beautiful Place written by Genevieve C. Peterkin and published by Univ of South Carolina Press. This book was released on 2015-03-13 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born in 1928 in the small coastal town of Murrells Inlet, South Carolina, Genevieve "Sister" Peterkin grew up with World War II bombing practice in her front yard, deep-sea fishing expeditions, and youthful rambles through the lowcountry. She shared her bedroom with a famous ghost and an impatient older sister. But most of all she listened. She absorbed the tales of her talented mother and her beloved friend, listened to the stories of the region's older residents, some of them former slaves, who were her friends, neighbors, and teachers. In this new edition she once again shares with readers her insider's knowledge of the lowcountry plantations, gardens, and beaches that today draw so many visitors. Beneath the humor, hauntings, and treasures of local history, she tells another, deeper story—one that deals with the struggle for racial equality in the South, with the sometimes painful adventures of marriage and parenthood, and with inner struggles for faith and acceptance. This edition includes a new foreword by coastal writer and researcher Lee G. Brockington and a new afterword by coauthor and lowcountry novelist William P. Baldwin.

Book Brookgreen Gardens Ever Changing Simply Amazing

Download or read book Brookgreen Gardens Ever Changing Simply Amazing written by Brookgreen Gardens and published by University of South Carolina Press. This book was released on 2022-01-02 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An oasis of art and nature, Brookgreen Gardens is America's first public sculpture garden and largest collection of American figurative sculpture. Founded in 1931 by Archer Milton Huntington and Anna Hyatt Huntington, its lush South Carolina coastal location is an exquisite setting for the more than two thousand works by four hundred twenty-five artists--including more than one hundred sculptures and other works by Anna Huntington, many placed in the gardens she designed. In 1984, Brookgreen was designated as a National Historic Landmark, highlighting the number of women sculptors whose work is presented in the collection, as well as the significance of the work of Anna Huntington. Today, Brookgreen has become a cultural institution unlike any other, blending sculpture, historic sites, botanical gardens, and the Lowcountry Zoo. As Brookgreen begins its ninetieth year, this volume celebrates the art, nature, and history ensconced in its 9,127 acres. More than one hundred color photographs; an introduction by president and CEO, Page Hayhurst Kiniry; and a foreword by its chairman of the board, Dick Rosen, bring Brookgreen Gardens to life on the page.

Book Arrogantly Shabby

Download or read book Arrogantly Shabby written by Clara C. Bitter and published by Dog Ear Publishing. This book was released on 2016-06-17 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Learn about Pawleys Island -- its beginnings and its legends -- Georgetown and the Georgetown Mill; Murrells Inlet; Oliver’s; the ubiquitous head boat and Mickey Spillane; Brookgreen Gardens; and O.D. and the Carolina Shag. See all these through the eyes of the Bitter family as they made it their vacation home for years. Meet the indomitable matriarch, Dammo, whose mineral rights to several Kentucky mines suddenly spat out a royalty check for $30,000 for the first time in thirty years. With lots of cash and lots of family, the idea of a multi-generational get-together appealed. Watch family members create entertaining schtick: the invention of the Pawley Dog, Bloody Marys on the porch, burying teens up to their neck in sand, impersonating popular actors, sculpting award-worthy sand castles, foraging at an age-damaged mom and pop grocery, keeping mind-boggling “bed-days” charts, and sailing the Hobie Cat into questionable situations. Share the bittersweet ending of our sojourn the summer before historic Hurricane Hugo wrecked and changed the island. But dwell not on one sad event, because we did it all and then some.
