Book excerpt: John R Gohmann was not born with the proverbial silver spoon in his mouth, nor was he a member of the Lucky Sperm Club. He was born in a log cabin with a dirt floor and no running water in rural Kentucky in 1950. John realized at a young age that he had a knack for numbers. The more he learned, the hungrier he grew for even more knowledge on the finer points of investing and making money. He was a shrewd negotiator and could bargain and barter with the best of the big players. His business acumen grew exponentially over the years after he graduated from high school. In 1968, John was drafted and served the country in the Air Force. After his honorable discharge from the service, he held a variety of jobs and also took night classes in business at Indiana University Southeast (IUS). John went to work for his father's company, Gohmann Asphalt and Construction, Inc., in 1976. He literally started at the bottom as a flagman and over the years, learned every facet of the business as he worked his way to the top. With the same tenacity his father had, John negotiated, cut deals, purchased land or equipment, and when the company's money was at stake, always put his two partners, the company's reputation, and the employees first. Family, faith in God, love of country and loyalty to his friends and employees are the things that made John the man he is today. He never forgot the people he met along the way and treated everyone with kindness and respect, also lessons he learned at an early age from his father, Herbert R Gohmann, Jr.

Book My Life in Institutions and My Way Out

Download or read book My Life in Institutions and My Way Out written by Michael Joseph Kennedy and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2014-06-17 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the story of Michael Kennedy's life. Born in 1960 with significant disabilities, he describes his early experiences living in three different institutions for the mentally retarded and how he had to become his own advocate if he was going to survive. He soon realized that, unlike most of the others in institutions, he could make his voice heard. He had to speak up to help himself and other individuals with developmental disabilities to learn about their rights, and how to prevent themselves from becoming trapped forever within complicated state bureaucracies. After moving out of the last institution into various types of supported living settings, Michael describes how he found new friendships, went to school, got a "real" job, and began to aspire to having full control of his own life. "I want to let people know how the state system used to be and that institutions must never be reopened." This is a book about hard work, resilience, and hope. It is an extraordinary life story, but told by an ordinary man with a clear mission to help others like himself.

The motivation for writing the individual poems is as diverse as the subjects (themes), and the writer drew inspiration from both personal experiences and those of other people. The compilation also includes both real and fictional incidents or experiences, and some individuals and places named or portrayed may be actually real. The collection is written in a clear-to-understand, rhyming language and is suitable for all age groups (teens and adults). The mental faculties are very awake in deep serenity when the mind does ponder and wander here and yonder. An experience, an incident, or nature may create an emotional spark that engulfs the whole being in an explosive flame. The muffled voice is then finally uttered. Friday Hamamba Hanene is a Lusaka-based banker who has worked for Barclays Bank Zambia as well as Standard Chartered Bank Zambia. He attended Kanini Basic School, Kansenshi Secondary, and Hillcrest Senior Secondary School as well as the Copperbelt University. He has been writing from a tender age, particularly verse, as a hobby. After a number of people came across some of his writings, they strongly urged him to consider publishing his works, and upon much contemplation, The Maiden Voice has been uttered. He has a great penchant for reading and writing and a great deal of traveling (meeting people and sightseeing).

From the moment her kids are born, she will always be concerned about their well-being. She will perform the mother's role forever, always worrying about them, no matter their age. Even though my kids are adults now, I still keep my cell phone on the bedside table when I sleep at night, just in case they need me. It's an old habit, but I can't help it. There is no proven need for that, and I shouldn't be their emergency response in the middle of the night, but still...I am a mom to the core. Even though every mom wants her kids to mature, grow up, and find their path in life, it's not easy to embrace their independence. They will choose to do things their own way, which in her eyes might seem reckless, dubious, or risky, in other words, built on sand. As a result, she scrambles to find peace of mind over their choices in life. But she can still have a quality life and enjoy happiness, no matter what is going on in her kids' lives. She simply needs to pick a different tactic.

Book excerpt: "In 2009, while thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail, Robert Moor began to wonder about the paths that lie beneath our feet: How do they form? Why do some improve over time while others fade? What makes us follow or strike off on our own? Over the course of the next seven years, Moor traveled the globe, exploring trails of all kinds, from the miniscule to the massive. He learned the tricks of master trail-builders, hunted down long-lost Cherokee trails, and traced the origins of our road networks and the Internet. In each chapter, Moor interweaves his adventures with findings from science, history, philosophy, and nature writing--combining the nomadic joys of Peter Matthiessen with the eclectic wisdom of Lewis Hyde's The Gift. Throughout, Moor reveals how this single topic--the oft-overlooked trail--sheds new light on a wealth of age-old questions: How does order emerge out of chaos? How did animals first crawl forth from the seas and spread across continents? How has humanity's relationship with nature and technology shaped the world around us? And, ultimately, how does each of us pick a path through life? With a breathtaking arc that spans from the dawn of animal life to the digital era, On Trails is a book that makes us see our world, our history, our species, and our ways of life anew"--Book jacket flap.

Book Paving the Way

    Book Details:
  • Author : Herma Hill Kay
  • Publisher : University of California Press
  • Release : 2021-04-13
  • ISBN : 0520378954
  • Pages : 375 pages

Download or read book Paving the Way written by Herma Hill Kay and published by University of California Press. This book was released on 2021-04-13 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first wave of trailblazing female law professors and the stage they set for American democracy. When it comes to breaking down barriers for women in the workplace, Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s name speaks volumes for itself—but, as she clarifies in the foreword to this long-awaited book, there are too many trailblazing names we do not know. Herma Hill Kay, former Dean of UC Berkeley School of Law and Ginsburg’s closest professional colleague, wrote Paving the Way to tell the stories of the first fourteen female law professors at ABA- and AALS-accredited law schools in the United States. Kay, who became the fifteenth such professor, labored over the stories of these women in order to provide an essential history of their path for the more than 2,000 women working as law professors today and all of their feminist colleagues. Because Herma Hill Kay, who died in 2017, was able to obtain so much first-hand information about the fourteen women who preceded her, Paving the Way is filled with details, quiet and loud, of each of their lives and careers from their own perspectives. Kay wraps each story in rich historical context, lest we forget the extraordinarily difficult times in which these women lived. Paving the Way is not just a collection of individual stories of remarkable women but also a well-crafted interweaving of law and society during a historical period when women’s voices were often not heard and sometimes actively muted. The final chapter connects these first fourteen women to the “second wave” of women law professors who achieved tenure-track appointments in the 1960s and 1970s, carrying on the torch and analogous challenges. This is a decidedly feminist project, one that Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg advocated for tirelessly and admired publicly in the years before her death.
