Book Public Perception of Pavement Rideability

Download or read book Public Perception of Pavement Rideability written by Scott Everett Arterburn and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To evaluate the public perception of pavements in Colorado, 24 individuals were driven over 69 pavement sections in the Denver Metro area. These individuals were asked to rate the pavement based on rideability and to determine whether that ride was acceptable or unacceptable. The 69 pavement sections that were rated include: 51 bituminous and 18 concrete sections, urban and rural roads, and 35 and 55 mph speed limits. These ratings were then scaled from 0 to 5, with 5 being the best ride. Using regression analysis, the scaled ratings were compared to the roughness of the pavement. The pavement roughness was measured by the Colorado Department of Highways using a Mays Index. The conclusions are: for bituminous pavements 10% of the public is unhappy at a present serviceability index of 2.50; for concrete pavements 10% of the public is unhappy at a present serviceability index of 2.21; and the public will tolerate rougher roads at slower speeds.

Book Improvement of Pavement Rideability in Utah

Download or read book Improvement of Pavement Rideability in Utah written by Jeffrey A. Long and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary objective of this study was to determine ways to improve the rideability of Utah roads by (1) increasing the effectiveness of present methods and (2) applying new methods using available surface quality measuring equipment. Ride measuring devices utilized by Utah were tested and found to be inadequate by themselves as standard measurement tools for construction acceptance testing. The Mays Ride Meter is recommended, however, for use in conjunction with construction acceptance testing with the stringline on all new bituminous concrete pavements. Mays roughness data would identify and locate, by station, rough pavement areas that may be in violation of surface tolerance specifications. These areas would then be tested with the stringline according to Utah's existing surface tolerance specifications. This procedure should make the use of the stringline identifying surface deviations more efficient and effective than random site selection. The Cox Profilograph is recommended for similar surveys on all new portland cement concrete pavements prior to construction acceptance testing with the stringline or the straightedge.

Book The Development of a Simple Instrument for Measuring Pavement Roughness and Predicting Pavement Rideability

Download or read book The Development of a Simple Instrument for Measuring Pavement Roughness and Predicting Pavement Rideability written by GF. Hayhoe and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on the results of recent research, it is possible to develop performance specifications for a simple instrument that would measure profile-type roughness in only one wheelpath--instead of two, as in the profilometer--and which would compute a roughness index that is as highly correlated with pavement rideability measurements as the roughness indexes derived from the full profile.

Book The Prediction of Pavement Ride Quality from Profile Measurements of Pavement Roughness

Download or read book The Prediction of Pavement Ride Quality from Profile Measurements of Pavement Roughness written by MS. Janoff and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper summarizes the results obtained in five different states when profiles were used to develop transforms that predict rideability from pavement roughness. The five individual state transforms are very similar and have similar accuracy and validity. As a result, one transform--derived from the combined data from all five states--can be used to accurately predict rideability from profile measures of roughness in any of the five states.

Book Measurements Specifications and Achievement of Smoothness for Pavement Construction

Download or read book Measurements Specifications and Achievement of Smoothness for Pavement Construction written by James H. Woodstrom and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 1990 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This synthesis will be of interest to construction engineers, pavement designers, contractors, and others interested in construction of new highway pavements with smooth surfaces. Information is provided on the various devices and specifications that are being used to obtain smooth pavements. The public rates a pavement primarily on its smooth-riding characteristics and highway agencies recognize that constructing smooth pavements results in fewer problems later and lower annual maintenance costs. This report of the Transportation Research Board describes the devices and specifications highway agencies use to ensure that newly constructed pavements will provide a smooth ride.

Book Pavement Roughness and Ride Correction Procedures for Jointed Concrete Pavements

Download or read book Pavement Roughness and Ride Correction Procedures for Jointed Concrete Pavements written by Steven L. Cumbaa and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study primarily compares the ability of several roughness measuring devices to measure and locate roughness and the ability of grinding to lessen roughness and presents recommendations for change in current roughness measurement specifications.
