Book excerpt: In recent years increased attention has been given to assessing the effects of traffic load variables on pavement distress from in-situ pavement response measurements. In this study, an experimental investigation was carried out to assess the influence of tire pressure on 1) surface deflection, 2) asphaltic concrete - base layer interfacial tensile strains, and 3) surface compressive strains. The study involved monitoring pavement responses under two wheel loading configurations at three tire inflation pressures and comparing the responses with those obtained from concurrent tests with a standard load. In general, variations in the magnitude of the pavement response variables with changes in tire inflation pressure were small and unique. There were no identifiable trends of the pavement response ratios with tire pressure variation.

Book excerpt: A specific objective was to establish how tire contact stresses may be modeled in existing layered elastic programs to better approximate the effects of non-uniform tire contact pressure distributions, and account for differences in tire construction, tire load, and tire inflation pressure on predicted pavement response. To this end, researchers assembled a data base of measured tire contact stresses and performed a comparative evaluation of methods for representing tire contact pressure distributions in existing models to predict performance-related pavement response variables. A computer program called TireView was developed that provides estimates of tire contact area as a function of tire type, tire load, and tire inflation pressure and predicts the stress distribution at the tire-pavement interface based on polynomial interpolations of measured tire contact stresses in the data base. A method for predicting pavement response using layered elastic analysis is proposed that is based on the predicted tire contact area.

The measured characteristics of the tires were gross contact area, net area, tire deflection, and contact pressures. The distributions of contact pressures were used in a theoretical analysis to evaluate the flexible pavement performance related parameter. The response of two flexible pavement structures was investigated in terms of the tensile strains at the bottom of the asphalt layer. In the second phase of this research, two full scale pavement sections were instrumented using strain gages to measure the strains at the bottom of the asphalt concrete layer. The data analysis presented in this paper shows the effect of varying the tire type, tire inflation pressure, and axle load and configuration on the response of flexible pavements. The results of the two studies showed that the wide base single tires are more damaging than the dual tires under all combinations of the test variables.

Book excerpt: Most pavement design methodologies assume that the tire-pavement contact stress is equal to the tire inflation pressure and uniformly distributed over a circular contact area. However, tire-pavement contact area is not in a circular shape and the contact stress is neither uniform nor equal to the tire inflation pressure. To precisely account for the effect of actual contact stress on pavement responses, this research evaluates pavement responses under the 3-D non-uniform stresses and under the uniform stress. The studied pavement responses include the horizontal strains at the pavement surface, the horizontal strains at the bottom of the asphalt layer, and the vertical strains at the top of subgrade. A multi-layer linear-elastic computer program, CIRCLY, is used to estimate pavement strains under a number of combinations of tire load, tire pressure, asphalt modulus, asphalt thickness and subgrade modulus. The Asphalt Institute method and the Shell method are used to predict the pavement fatigue life based on the critical strains at the bottom of the asphalt layer calculated by both 3-D stress model and the uniform stress model. Results show that the vertical contact stress component of the 3-D stresses has the dominant effect on the studied pavement strains. The effects of longitudinal stress component and the transverse stress component cannot be ignored, especially for pavement with a thin asphalt layer. Asphalt thickness, asphalt modulus, tire load and tire pressure have significant effects on the differences in asphalt strains between the 3-D stress model and the uniform stress model, but not on the difference in the vertical strains at the subgrade top. Subgrade modulus shows little effect on the differences in all studied strains predicted by the 3-D stress model and the uniform stress model. Tire pressure has greater effect than tire load on the fatigue life of a pavement with a thin asphalt layer. When the pavement has a thick asphalt layer, the effect of tire load is greater than the effect of tire pres, and a larger tire load is associated with a smaller number of load repetitions.

Book excerpt: The proper understanding of tire-pavement interaction is important for the accurate analysis of load-induced stresses and strains in the pavement structure. This dissertation focuses on the analysis of the mechanism of tire-pavement interaction and the effect of tire-pavement interaction on pavement responses using a decoupled modeling approach. First, an air-inflated three-dimensional (3-D) finite element (FE) tire model was built and the interaction between a tire and a non-deformable pavement surface was simulated. The tire is modeled as a composite structure including rubber and reinforcement. The steady-state tire rolling process was simulated using an Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian (ALE) formulation. The developed tire-pavement interaction model is used to evaluate the mechanism of load distribution at the tire-pavement interface under various tire loading and rolling conditions. After that, a 3-D FE model of flexible pavement was developed to analyze pavement responses under various loading scenarios. This model utilizes the implicit dynamic analysis, simulates vehicular loading as a continuous moving load, and incorporates 3-D contact stresses at the tire-pavement interface. In the pavement model, the asphalt layer is modeled as a linear viscoelastic material and the granular base layer is modeled as a nonlinear anisotropic material. The FE pavement model was used to analyze critical pavement responses in thin and thick asphalt pavements considering different damage mechanisms. This dissertation concludes that knowledge of tire-pavement contact stress distributions is critical for pavement response prediction. Most importantly, the non-uniform distribution of vertical contact stresses and the localized tangential contact stresses should be considered in the mechanistic-empirical pavement design. The contact stress distributions at the tire-pavement interface are affected by vehicle loading (wheel load and tire inflation pressure), tire configuration (dual-tire assembly and wide-base tire), vehicle maneuvering (braking/acceleration and cornering), and pavement surface friction. Therefore, pavement damage should be quantified using accurate loading inputs that are represented by realistic tire-pavement contact stress distributions. Thin and thick asphalt pavements fail in different ways. Multiple distress modes could occur in thin asphalt pavements, including bottom-up fatigue cracking and rutting in each pavement layer. It was found that the interaction between the viscoelastic asphalt layer and the nonlinear anisotropic granular base layer plays an important role for the stress distribution within a thin asphalt pavement structure under moving vehicular loading. In thick asphalt pavements, near-surface cracking is a critical failure mechanism, which is affected by the localized stress states and pavement structure characteristics. Particularly, the effect of shear stress on the formation of near-surface cracking at multi-axial stress states is important and can not be neglected, especially at high temperatures.

The Accelerated Loading Facility testing machine was used to simulate traffic loading. The evaluation consisted of three components. First, deflections and strains for various combinations of load and tire pressure were measured and compared. Second, rutting and cracking for two test sections trafficked with the same load but different tire pressures were evaluated. Finally, changes in the pavement materials resulting from traffic were compared for the two sections trafficked with different tire pressures. These three evaluations showed tire pressure to be a second order effect. The effect of tire pressure on flexible pavement response and performance was less significant the effects of load and temperature. During the response experiment, when load and temperature were constant, the effects of tire pressure could be observed. However, in the performance and materials evaluations, the effects of increased tire pressure were masked by differences in temperature"--Technical report documentation page.
