Book Immunology of Malignant Diseases

Download or read book Immunology of Malignant Diseases written by V.S. Byers and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past 5 years, clinical immunology, as a whole, has advanced more rapidly than over the past 20 years. Many of these advances have been que to monoclonal antibody technology with its ability to identify antigens on tumour cells with a precision never before available. Monoclonal antibodies have the ability to identify subsets of human T-Iymphocytes and aid in diagnosis of both immunodeficiency disorders such as AIDS, or autoimmune diseases, and they can be adapted as drug targeting agents. Additionally, however, major advances have been made in identifying immunomodulating agents, and the last year has seen two such agents, IL-2 and OKT3, made available commercially for such intervention. Furthermore, another immuno modulating technique, bone marrow transplantation, ha~ now been established as a curative modality in leukaemia treatment. A central issue in tumour immunology is whether human tumours express antigens which can be termed tumour-specific. This has important implications for both tumour immunity as well as drug targeting. This issue is considered in detail by R. A. Robins in the introductory chapter in which the expression of antigens in human tumours is compared with that in experimentally induced animal tumours. This controversial issue is also considered in later chapters by Bast in breast carcinoma, Riimke and de Vries in melanoma, V{mky in lung cancer, Armitage in colorectal cancer, and Paulie and Perlmann in bladder carcinoma.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE GRANDSON OF MAFIA CRIME BOSS VITO GENOVESE MAKES A REMARKABLE DEBUT IN THIS SUSPENSEFUL THRILLER. A NOVEL ONLY HE COULD WRITE. It's March of 1963 in a quiet New Jersey shore community. Joseph Napolo is a young boy who cherishes his Pop Pop Carmine's Sunday visits to his parent's home. Joseph has come to understand that there is something special about his grandfather - the stories he tells, his friends that visit after dinner, how they kiss his ring and call him Don Carmine. This Sunday, however, Joseph is the sole witness to sinister and dramatic events. Young Joseph and his grandfather pledge to keep a dark secret. Over time, Joseph learns his grandfather had been the boss of a New York crime family - one that the media continues to illuminate as the most powerful Mafia organization in the country. Joseph has shunned his grandfather's ways but he will forever share the Family name. He understands that fame is fickle and fleeting. Infamy is not. Now Spring 2001, Joseph is a husband, father, and with his best friend, Michael Cogan, co-owner of a successful trucking company. However, trouble with the Teamsters Union, Cogan's gambling debts, and a hijacking that is more than it appears to be, create a scenario where the past and the present reconvene. During this one week in May, these ostensibly unconnected events toss together several nefarious entities. Teamster officials, a high-tech defense contractor, the Napolo Crime Family, and an ex-US intelligence operative collude and collide, taking Joseph on a wild ride, racing toward a Friday deadline. Reluctantly, Joseph must penetrate his grandfather's world to protect his own family and to save his friend, only to find himself a key player in a conspiracy that redefines patriotism and his grandfather's role in history. Book excerpt: Seldom, if ever, has a writer been given access to a former major drug dealer in the Mafia underworld and three generations of family members that followed. After nearly two years of interviews and subsequent research, it has been discovered that a close relative of the family was one of the most powerful figures in the Mafia from the 1940s to the mid 1990s, yet his identity until now has never been revealed. He was the consigliere for all of the American Mafia. The book tells in detail the life and times of a family who escaped the threat of Fascism in Sicily at the turn of the century and the rise of one of the children to a major figure in the Mob. Another sibling returned from a tragic life in an orphanage only to become an adept criminal. He ultimately spent twenty years off and on in prison with the Whos Who of the Mafia, men who became friends and had secret stories to tell. After prison, he became one of the pioneers of Off Off Broadway in NYC and later was responsible for the regeneration of Little Italy in the Lower East Side of NYC. The book details the influence and protection afforded later generations of the family to this day. It offers a unique insight into the real life of people during this 100 year period. Myths about the Mob are disclosed and inaccuracies in the history of the Mafia are corrected. It is a very compelling epic true story. It is a book you will not be able to put down.
