Book excerpt: The Courage to Be introduced issues of theology and culture to a general readership. The book examines ontic, moral, and spiritual anxieties across history and in modernity. The author defines courage as the self-affirmation of one's being in spite of a threat of nonbeing. He relates courage to anxiety, anxiety being the threat of non-being and the courage to be what we use to combat that threat. Tillich outlines three types of anxiety and thus three ways to display the courage to be. Tillich writes that the ultimate source of the courage to be is the "God above God," which transcends the theistic idea of God and is the content of absolute faith (defined as "the accepting of the acceptance without somebody or something that accepts").

Download or read book Tillich written by J. Heywood Thomas and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2000-12-13 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paul Tillich (1886-1965) was a remarkable and a singular theologian who was as much at home in a philosophical discussion as he was in the pulpit and seemed as keenly interested in art and politics as he was in his work as a professional theologian. His attacks on Nazism led to the banning of his books, his dismissal from Frankfurt University and, ultimately, his departure for the United States in November 1933. He continued to live and work in America after the war, engaging in many lecture tours around the world. Professor Heywood Thomas reviews critically the philosophical background to Tillich's theology, including his debts to Schelling, Kant and Husserl. He surveys Tillich's achievement as a philosophical theologian, examining his ontological approach to Christology and salvation and his understanding of the Church as a spiritual community. He concludes with an exploration of Tillich's contribution to the changed situation of theology today. Tillich's many points of contact with key thinkers in theology and philosophy (including Heidegger, Otto, Bultmann, Adorno and Barth) make him a compelling figure for those interested in the history of ideas in the twentieth century.

Book The Cambridge Companion to Paul Tillich

Download or read book The Cambridge Companion to Paul Tillich written by Russell Re Manning and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2009-02-12 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The complex philosophical theology of Paul Tillich (1886–1965), increasingly studied today, was influenced by thinkers as diverse as the Romantics and Existentialists, Hegel and Heidegger. A Lutheran pastor who served as a military chaplain in World War I, he was dismissed from his university post at Frankfurt when the Nazis came to power in 1933, and emigrated to the United States, where he continued his distinguished career. This authoritative Companion provides accessible accounts of the major themes of Tillich's diverse theological writings and draws upon the very best of contemporary Tillich scholarship. Each chapter introduces and evaluates its topic and includes suggestions for further reading. The authors assess Tillich's place in the history of twentieth-century Christian thought as well as his significance for current constructive theology. Of interest to both students and researchers, this Companion reaffirms Tillich as a major figure in today's theological landscape.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paul Tillich's classic work confronts the age-old question of how the moral is related to the religious. In particular, Tillich addresses the conflict between reason-determined ethics and faith-determined ethics and shows that neither is dependent on the other but that each alone is inadequate. Instead, Tillich reveals to us the gift that came with the arrival of Christ: a new reality that offers a power of being in which we can participate and out of which true thought and right action are possible. The Library of Theological Ethics series focuses on what it means to think theologically and ethically. It presents a selection of important and otherwise unavailable texts in easily accessible form. Volumes in this series will enable sustained dialogue with predecessors though reflection on classic works in the field.

Book Biblical Religion and the Search for Ultimate Reality

Download or read book Biblical Religion and the Search for Ultimate Reality written by Paul Tillich and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2010-06-22 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr. Tillich shows here that in spite of the contrast between philosophical and biblical language, it is neither necessary nor possible to separate them from each other. On the contrary, all the symbols used in biblical religion drive inescapably toward the philosophical quest for being. An important statement of a great theologian's position, this book presents an eloquent plea for the essential function of philosophy in religious thought.

Book excerpt: Paul Tillich, one of the greatest Protestant theologians of modern times, wrote more than one hundred radio addresses that were braodcast into Nazi Germany from March 1942 through May 1944. The broadcasts were passionate and political--urging Germans to recognize the horror of Hitler and to reject a morally and spiritually bankrupt government. Laregly unknown in the United States, the broadcasts have been translated into English for the first time, and approximately half of them are presented in this book.
