Book Paul the Interpreter of Christ Classic Reprint

Download or read book Paul the Interpreter of Christ Classic Reprint written by A. T. Robertson and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-28 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Paul the Interpreter of Christ The new books on Paul will never cease and they ought not to cease. If we stop studying Paul, we shall miss much of Christ. The world has never had a man more wholly Christ-filled than Paul. In the present volume no effort is made to tell Paul's life, as is done in my Epochs in the Life of Paul and in scores of other books by many writers. I attempt here merely to look at various angles and corners in Paul's life and teaching that have a keen present-day interest. Paul was the most forward-looking man of his generation. We have not yet caught up with his farseeing vision of Christ and of the Kingdom of God. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Use flattering words, as you know; nor hide covetousness under fair preo tences, (god is witness), nor did I seek honor from men, either from you or others; although I might have been bur densome, as Christ 's apostle.11 But I behaved myself among you with gentleness; and as a nurse cherishes her own chil dren,12, so in my fond affection it was my joy to give yo'u not only the Glad tidings of God, but my own life also, h cause you were dear to me. For you remembei', brethren, my toilsome labors; how I worked both night and day, that I might not be burdensome to any of you, while I proclaimed to you the message13 which I bore, the Glad tidings of God. Ye are yourselves witnesses, and God also is witness, how holy, and just, and unblamable were my dealings towards you that believe. You know how earnestly, as a father his own children, I exhorted, and entreated, and adjured each one among you to walk worthy of God, by whom you are 'called into His own kingdom and glory. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “For me, Paul has always been the most difficult and therefore also most delightful advocate and interpreter of the Lord Jesus Christ and of the human experience of God’s transforming power through Christ. In Paul’s letters above all I have found the quality of mind and the depth of conviction that could arouse in me both excitement and passion. And it is Paul’s letters, above all, that show how important and difficult is life together in the church.” — from the preface With the contextual framework in place from volume one of The Canonical Paul, Luke Timothy Johnson now probes each of the thirteen biblical letters traditionally attributed to the apostle Paul in a way that balances respect for historical integrity with attention to present-day realities. In doing so, Johnson reforges the connection between biblical studies and the life of the church, seeking to establish once again the foundational and generative role that the thirteen letters of Paul have had among Christians for centuries. Far from being a “definitive theology” of Paul, or an oversimplified synthesis, Interpreting Paul provides glimpses into various moments of Paul’s thinking and teaching that we find in Scripture, modeling how one might read his letters closely for fresh, creative interpretations now and into the future. Approached in this way, both in minute detail and as a whole canon, Paul’s letters yield rich insights, and his voice becomes accessible to all readers of the Bible.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospel of Paul: The Gospel of Jesus Have no doubt been largely determined by the writings of the Apostle Paul. The statements of the Saviour regard ing His own person and work, plain and pregnant as these are, run into a peculiar and definite mould when passing through the mind of Paul, and come forth stamped with his own individuality. In more recent times some critics have endeavoured to make out that the writings of the great Apostle set forth a different gospel from that contained in the sayings of Jesus as recorded in the Synoptic Gospels. We recognise the profound truth of Peter's words, Lord, to whom shall we go? Thou hast the words of eternal life. But it does not follow that the same Spirit of Truth who spake in and through Jesus Christ (heb. Ii. Does not. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christian According to Paul Ye were at that time separate from Christ, alienated from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of the promise, having no hope and without God in the world - Eph 2. 12. Times have changed, but have the hearts of men changed? How truly do the outstanding words and phrases of this verse, in which Paul vividly described to the Ephesians their state before they accepted Christ, picture the condition of those today who do not know Christ? What does it mean that they are apart from the company of those who live in Christ's light? What is the result of the fact that their manner of life has set them in opposition to the friends of Christ? Is it a loss that they are strangers to his ways, his thoughts, his promises? Have they hope of any real good? What is the effect of being without God? How much real satisfaction can there be in the life that does not know him? What book in the Bible has most to say about hope? Who inspires hope? How important a place does Paul give to hope? (consult a concordance.) Paul: In the Light of Modern Research This is a companion volume to the Old Testament and Gospels in the Light of Modern Research, but it runs on other lines. Perhaps I should strictly have called this book 'S. Paul in the light of Modern Thought.' In my previous works I dealt mainly with the present attitude of the Higher Criticism towards the origin, composition and historical trustworthiness of the books of Holy Scripture. The scope of this work is different. Every topic is still approached from a severely critical standpoint in the full light of recent research, but the main theme is Paul's own message, not questions of literary criticism, although these are at times unavoidable. My one wish and aim is to bring the mind of Paul and the modern mind into vital relation with each other, and, if possible, to help readers to understand and love the Paul whom I my self so deeply love and revere. Every day convinces me more and more that Paul is the Apostle of the present, still more of the future, and that - with a few important reservations - his solution of the deep problems of life is abreast of the best modern religious thought, often ahead of it. In the words of Matthew Arnold: 'Paul's reign has only begun, and his fundamental ideas, disengaged from the elaborate misconceptions with which ecclesiasticism has overlaid them, will have an influence in the future greater than any which they have yet had.' For us to-day, Paul is essentially the Apostle of Christ, His best interpreter, and it is through Paul, if at all, that we are to get 'back to Christ.' In our Bibles, Paul's gospel comes after the other four; but, in point of time and intrinsic value, it is avowedly the first. A true instinct prompted the Church to add the words, 'the Apostle, ' to the title of his Epistles and to no others. The skeleton-framework of this book is simple. Part I. opens with an appreciation of Paul's true place and influence in the history of Christianity. Several chapters are next devoted to a psychological review of Paul's early life and conversion. This is the key to the man and his work. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
