Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: History can offer many examples of personal initiative and genius being stifled by poverty and lack of opportunity, by prejudice and jealousy, or by misunderstanding and ignorance. This, of course, was not the case with Paul Storr, but one wonders how his technique would have developed had his working life not coincided with one of the great periods of English history, and, above all, had there been no Philip Rundell to undate him with orders for the Royal Family, for the celebration of a fresh victory, or to fulfil [sic] a contract for one of the great houses of a wealthy and aristocratic England. -- Pg. 19.

Book excerpt: The first book on Paul Storr for more than fifty yearsBicentenary of the Battle of Waterloo, so Regency period in the newsPaul Storr (1770-1844), acknowledged to be the greatest silversmith of the Regency period, holds a special place in the history of English silver. The workshops he directed, first for the Royal Goldsmiths Rundell, Bridge & Rundell, and later on his own account, wrought some of the greatest silver of the first half of the nineteenth century. The designs were provided by well-known Regency names such as John Flaxman, William Theed, Edward Hodges Baily, and Thomas Stothard. Storr numbered among his clients not only British royalty and aristocracy, but continental European nobility and prominent Americans. The year 2015 marks the bicentennial of the Battle of Waterloo, which saw Britain emerge as the dominant power in Europe. Military campaigns on land and sea, a more international outlook, newly fashionable foods, changes in table settings, and above all the creation of great wealth for Britain resulted in a revolution in silverware.

Book A Noble Feast

Download or read book A Noble Feast written by Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Celebrating the stunning beauty of English silver crafted over three centuries, A Noble Feast offers unique insight into the developments that took place in eating and drinking habits in Stuart, Hanoverian, and Victorian England. Foreign influences, not only from France, Spain, and Italy but also from the New World, figure prominently in the customs of the tabletop during this period of English history. Drawing on colorful details from menus, cookery books, and anecdotes about the owners of these magnificent silver tablewares, Christopher Hartop shows how the silver reflects burgeoning prosperity in Restoration London and global expansion of the British Empire in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Through examples taken from the Gans Collection--one of the leading silver collections in the United States--Hartop documents the confidence in artistic endeavor as well as in trade and industry that typified the age. With works by such celebrated masters as Paul de Lamerie, Paul Storr, Robert Garrard, and Rundell, Bridge & Rundell, the collection offers a veritable feast of silver splendor, here highlighted by lush color illustrations and an updated catalogue.
