Book excerpt: The Colorado Rockies are Ann Zwinger's subject in prose and drawing. There, 8,300 feet above sea level, summer is short and winter long and often harsh; it is a place where much of life exists on the margin. In good years the grasses are lush; in bad years, even the mice starve. But it is a land the Zwingers have lovingly explored and recorded, careful not to disrupt the balance of the land, the relationship of plant to animal and of each to its environment. These forty acres, called Constant Friendship after the Maryland land her ancestor settled in the early 1730s, are a place of all seasons, for even in winter there is a promise of spring, and in spring the foretaste of summer. The white of snow becomes the white of summer clouds, the resonant green of spruce becomes the green head of drake mallard ... here part of each season is contained in every other. In beautiful and simple language and with 80 illustrations, Beyond the Aspen Grove tells of meadow, lake, marsh and forest, of algae and dragonflies, of deer and jays that live in the thin clear air of the mountain world.

Book The Managed Heart

  • Author : Arlie Russell Hochschild
  • Publisher : Univ of California Press

  • ISBN : 0520951859
  • Pages : 352 pages

Download or read book The Managed Heart written by Arlie Russell Hochschild and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2012-03-31 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In private life, we try to induce or suppress love, envy, and anger through deep acting or "emotion work," just as we manage our outer expressions of feeling through surface acting. In trying to bridge a gap between what we feel and what we "ought" to feel, we take guidance from "feeling rules" about what is owing to others in a given situation. Based on our private mutual understandings of feeling rules, we make a "gift exchange" of acts of emotion management. We bow to each other not simply from the waist, but from the heart. But what occurs when emotion work, feeling rules, and the gift of exchange are introduced into the public world of work? In search of the answer, Arlie Russell Hochschild closely examines two groups of public-contact workers: flight attendants and bill collectors. The flight attendant’s job is to deliver a service and create further demand for it, to enhance the status of the customer and be "nicer than natural." The bill collector’s job is to collect on the service, and if necessary, to deflate the status of the customer by being "nastier than natural." Between these extremes, roughly one-third of American men and one-half of American women hold jobs that call for substantial emotional labor. In many of these jobs, they are trained to accept feeling rules and techniques of emotion management that serve the company’s commercial purpose. Just as we have seldom recognized or understood emotional labor, we have not appreciated its cost to those who do it for a living. Like a physical laborer who becomes estranged from what he or she makes, an emotional laborer, such as a flight attendant, can become estranged not only from her own expressions of feeling (her smile is not "her" smile), but also from what she actually feels (her managed friendliness). This estrangement, though a valuable defense against stress, is also an important occupational hazard, because it is through our feelings that we are connected with those around us. On the basis of this book, Hochschild was featured in Key Sociological Thinkers, edited by Rob Stones. This book was also the winner of the Charles Cooley Award in 1983, awarded by the American Sociological Association and received an honorable mention for the C. Wright Mills Award.

Book Contested Cultural Heritage

Download or read book Contested Cultural Heritage written by Helaine Silverman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-11-02 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cultural heritage is material – tangible and intangible – that signifies a culture’s history or legacy. It has become a venue for contestation, ranging in scale from protesting to violently claimed and destroyed. But who defines what is to be preserved and what is to be erased? As cultural heritage becomes increasingly significant across the world, the number of issues for critical analysis and, hopefully, mediation, arise. The issue stems from various groups: religious, ethnic, national, political, and others come together to claim, appropriate, use, exclude, or erase markers and manifestations of their own and others’ cultural heritage as a means for asserting, defending, or denying critical claims to power, land, and legitimacy. Can cultural heritage be well managed and promoted while at the same time kept within parameters so as to diminish contestation? The cases herein rage from Greece, Spain, Egypt, the UK, Syria, Zimbabwe, Italy, the Balkans, Bénin, and Central America.

Book excerpt: Bruce Nauman, Alice Neel, Chuck Close, Cindy Sherman, Dale Chihuly, Nam June Paik: these are just a few of the approximately 5,000 artists whose once-fledgling careers have been fostered by a Visual Artists' Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts. Sometimes controversial, always committed to the development of art in America, from 1966 to 1995 the NEA awarded many such artists' fellowships to recipients in a diverse range of disciplines. A Creative Legacy presents a compelling insider account of this innovative government program -- how its policies were determined, its panelists selected, and the artists evaluated. The 100 color and nearly 200 black-and-white illustrations showcase a significant sampling of work by both notable and less-recognized honorees; all recipients from 1965 to 1995 are listed in the extensive indices.
