Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Paul and His Friends: A Series of Revival Sermons The sermons contained in this volume were preached in the First Methodist Episcopal Church, Cleveland, Ohio, during the month of January, 1898, in a series of evangelistic meetings. The themes had been selected two years before and illustrations had been gathering during all that time; but each sermon was finally outlined and dictated to a stenographer on the day of delivery. One of the most gracious revivals I have ever known in my pastoral work accompanied their utterance. The blessing of God made them at that time a message of salvation to many hearts, and I pray for His continued blessing upon them as they go out in printed form. The other volumes of revival sermons which I have pub lished have met with so wide a welcome in all parts of the english-speaking world that I am on couraged to hope that these discourses will bring suggestive and illustrative material to the hand of preachers, Sunday-school teachers, and soul-win. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Paul's Certainties: And Other Sermons 'I know Him whom I have believed.' 2 Tim. i. 12. 'We know that all things work together for good.' - Rom. iii. 28. 'We know ... we have a building of God, a house not made with hands eternal in the heavens.' 2 COR. v. I. No one can read the Epistles of Paul with any care without noticing in them a strange mingling of humility and assurance in the Apostle's references to himself. The language of self-depreciation and the language of self-assertion are both to be found in his letters. When thinking of himself in the light of his past, Paul can find no language too strong to describe his own utter unworthiness; but when he is defending himself against the attacks of enemies and detractors, he asserts his dignity and authority in language that sounds almost boastful and egotistical in its vehemence. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Prayers of St. Paul: Being an Analysis and Exposition, Devotional Portion of the of Writings However symmetrical and perfect these sentences are as statements of Christian doctrine, it is their exhibition of Christian privilege that has always made them so precious to-the devout. AS such only they give out all their beauty. This really explains their origin. When soever the Apostle approaches the higher Christian life, and the exceeding greatness of the power and promise of God, and the innermost secrets of the provisions of the Christian covenant, we perceive him, as it were, changing his voice: doctrine, precept, exhortation give place to prayer; the pen is laid down, and the sentence finished in ardent praise or intercession, to be afterwards written under the suggestion of the Holy Ghost, just as it left his heart. In some instances - such as the opening prayer to the Colossians and those that abound in the Thessalonian Epistles - the words go Off into petition and return again without disturbing the order, only leaving their richer sanctity on the text. In others again - most notably in the middle Of the Ephesians - there is an intentional suspension of the theme, and the prayer is as deliberate and set as when the Apostle knelt with the same Ephesians by the sea-shore; as clear and sharply defined as if it had been let into the body of the Epistle; perfect throughout from the bending of the knees and the orderly approach. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sermons, Vol. 17: Preached in 1886 The apostle of the Gentiles held a very useful and glorious office; but he had by no means a smooth path in life. When we read the account of his sufferings, and persecutions, and labors, we wonder how a single individual could have gone through them all. He was a true hero; though a Hebrew of the Hebrews, he stands in the very front of the whole Gentile church as its founder and teacher under God, and we owe to him what we can never fully estimate. When we consider the struggles of his life, we do not wonder that the apostle was sometimes in great sorrow of heart, and heavily burdened in spirit. He was so at the time when he wrote this Epistle to the Christian friends at Rome. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
