Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by Aram Goudsouzian, illustrated by Bill Murray, and edited by Vijay Shah, Man on a Mission is a graphic history that tells James Meredith's dramatic story in his own singular voice. In 1962, Meredith famously desegregated the University of Mississippi. As the first Black American admitted to the school, he demonstrated great courage amidst the subsequent political clashes and tragic violence. After President Kennedy summoned federal troops to help maintain order, the South--and America at large--would never be the same. Man on a Mission depicts Meredith's relentless pursuit of justice, beginning with his childhood in rural Mississippi and culminating with the confrontation at Ole Miss. From the dawn of the modern civil rights movement, Meredith has offered a unique perspective on democracy, racial equality, and the meaning of America. Man on a Mission presents his captivating saga for a new generation in the era of Black Lives Matter.

Book With

    Book Details:
  • Author : Skye Jethani
  • Publisher : Thomas Nelson
  • Release : 2011-08-22
  • ISBN : 1595553800
  • Pages : 223 pages

Download or read book With written by Skye Jethani and published by Thomas Nelson. This book was released on 2011-08-22 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With explores the narrative of the Bible to show that we were created to be with God, and that restoring this connection is his mission. Instead of life over, under, from, or even for God, what leads us into freedom and restoration is life with God. Why are American Christians, who have more access to biblical teaching than any other people in history, failing to experience the freedom of the Christian life? Why are pastors, those closest to the work and ministry, burning out at an alarming rate? Why do many church members, who give large amounts of their time and wealth to Christ and his kingdom, secretly question the legitimacy of their efforts? And why are spiritual seekers dismissing the validity of the Christian message? Is it possible we’ve misunderstood the call of the Christian life? A life lived in rich communion with God cultivates faith, hope, and love in a way that transforms both us and the broken world we inhabit. In With, you’ll find: illustrations of concepts in the book to aid understanding; recommendations for how to practice communion with God, including three helpful practices; and a discussion guide for use when continuing the conversation with others in small groups. Endorsements: If we've grown weary of Christianity, if we find most any local church uninspiring, maybe the problem lies not in the Christian faith or these faithful bodies, but in our own disgruntled hearts. In With, Skye Jethani tenderly unmasks the clichéd posturing that too often masquerades as genuine communion with Christ. More importantly, he takes readers to the humble place they must occupy--in prayer, studying Scripture, with the Church--if faith, hope, and love are to truly mark our lives. -James H. Gilmore, author, The Experience Economy It doesn’t matter, as old theologians were rumored to argue, how many angels can dance on a pinhead. But it does matter which preposition governs your faith--over, after, against, for, from, under, with. Who knew what huge worlds turn on such tiny words? Who knew what theological riches were laced into the bones of grammar? Skye has done a great service to the church. In prose elegant and clear, with insights keen and deep, he shows how everything changes with just one word: With. It’s a book I want my whole church to read. -Mark Buchanan, author of Spiritual Rhythm Who knew that a preposition had so much influence? Skye's book will challenge the way that you think about God and faith, digging deep into our motivations and heart issues. You can't read this book and not see yourself and others differently! -Margaret Feinberg, author of Scouting the Divine and Hungry for God

Book Divine Agency and Divine Action Volume II

Download or read book Divine Agency and Divine Action Volume II written by William J. Abraham and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Divine Agency and Divine Action, Volume II builds on Volume I, which established that no generic concept of action will suffice for understanding the character of divine actions explicit in the Christian faith. Volume II argues that in order to understand divine action, one must begin with the array of specific actions predicated of God in the Christian tradition. William J. Abraham argues that one must practice theology in order to analyze properly the concept of divine action. Abraham offers a careful review and evaluation of the particularities of divine action as they appear in the work of biblical, patristic, medieval, and Reformation-era theologians. Particular attention is given to the divine inspiration of scripture, creation, incarnation, transubstantiation in the Eucharist, predestination, and divine concurrence. The work does not simply repeat the doctrinal formulations found in the Christian tradition, but examines them in order to find fresh ways of thinking about these issues for our own time, especially with respect to the contemporary debates about divine agency and divine action.

  • Publisher : Smyth & Helwys Publishing, Inc.

  • ISBN : 1573125180
  • Pages : 178 pages

Download or read book Acts written by Judson Edwards and published by Smyth & Helwys Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2008 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studying Acts may make readers feel as though they are stepping into a different world, a world of miracles, a world where God is alive and moving and doing remarkable things. How can that world intersect ours? How can the old story of people speaking in tongues and raising the dead come alive in a world where no one speaks in tongues and the dead stay dead? How can Acts be relevant to our lives and our church? In Acts, the people who believe in Jesus are filled with the Holy Spirit and set about the business of gathering a community. They have to decide how wide their tent is going to be and whom they're going to embrace, so they give themselves to the task of breaking down walls. Jesus is not just for Jews, they decide. He's for everyone. They launch out spreading the word. Paul becomes the focal point of the story, and he and his friends move about the ancient world telling all kinds of people the good news about Jesus and his resurrection. But there is opposition, and Paul is imprisoned. He is faithful even there, though, taking a stand before the government authorities. By the time the drama of Acts ends, Paul might be confined, but his message most assuredly is not. The gospel has been unleashed throughout that entire part of the world. Gathering a community. Breaking down walls. Spreading the word. Taking a stand. These four phrases organize this study of Acts and guide readers through a world alive with God and God's mighty deeds. And all of us who have drunk too deeply at the wells of reason and rationality will once again pause to wonder and stand rapt in awe.

Book excerpt: A tragic plane crash that leaves two women stranded and fighting for their lives kicks off this sweeping and hilarious novel from award-winning writer Drew Hayden Taylor that blends thriller, murder mystery, and horror with humour and spectacle. Elmore Trent is a professor of Indigenous studies who finds himself entangled in an affair that's ruining his marriage; Paul North plays in the IHL (Indigenous Hockey League), struggling to keep up with the game that's passing him by; Detective Ruby Birch is chasing a string of gruesome murders, with clues that conspicuously lead her to both Elmore and Paul. What starts off as a series of subtle connections between isolated characters quickly takes a menacing turn, as it becomes increasingly clear that someone—or something—is hunting them all.
