Book excerpt: A Frenchman in Tahiti After starting a career as a bank broker, Paul Gauguin (born 1848) turned to painting only at age twenty-five. After initial successes within the Impressionist circle, he broke with Vincent van Gogh and subsequently, when private difficulties caused him to become restless, embarked on a peripatetic life, wandering first through Europe and finally, in the search for pristine originality and unadulterated nature, to Tahiti. The paintings created from this time to his death in 1903 brought him posthumous fame. In pictures devoid of any attempt at romantically disguising the life style of the primitive island peoples, Gauguin was able to convey the magical effect that both the landscapes and life of the natives--their body language, charm and beauty--had on him. Wearying of his reputation as a South Sea painter, Gauguin finally determined to return to France, but died of syphilis on the Marquis Islands before his departure. About the Series: Each book in TASCHEN's Basic Art series features: a detailed chronological summary of the life and oeuvre of the artist, covering his or her cultural and historical importance a concise biography approximately 100 illustrations with explanatory captions

Book excerpt: This Art Book with Foreword by Maria Peitcheva contains 235 selected color plates of drawings and paintings from Paul Gauguin.Eugene-Henri-Paul Gauguin was French painter, sculptor, and printmaker. Gauguin's style developed from Impressionism through a brief cloisonnist phase (in partnership with Emile Bernard) towards a highly personal brand of Symbolism, which sought within the tradition of Pierre Puvis de Chavannes to combine and contrast an idealized vision of primitive Polynesian culture with the skeptical pessimism of an educated European. A self-consciously outspoken personality and an aggressively asserted position as the leader of the Pont-Aven group made him a dominant figure in Parisian intellectual circles in the late 1880s. His use of non-naturalistic color and formal distortion for expressive ends was widely influential on early 20th-century avant-garde artists.

This book was released on 2011-10-14 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book 310 paintings are reproduced on 224 color plates. It is a rather large collection in one compendium, covering the prolific painter's and artist's most dramatic and expressive period from 1887 to his death in 1903. The book begins with a biography, a eulogy by Charles Morice (1903), and excerpts from Gauguin's book “Noa Noa” narrating his adventures on Tahiti and the Marquesas Islands. In a somber, slightly hoarse voice, Gauguin said: “Primitive art comes from the spirit and uses nature. So-called refined art comes from sensuality and serves nature. Nature is the servant of the first and the mistress of the second. But the servant cannot forget her origins, she degrades the artist by allowing him to adore her. This is how we fall into the abominable error of Naturalism. Naturalism begins with the Greece of Pericles. Since then, there have been no more or less great artists except those who have somehow reacted against this error; but their reactions have been no more than leaps of memory, glimmers of good sense within a movement of decadence, in the end, uninterrupted for centuries. Truth is purely cerebral art, this is primitive art—the most learned of all—this was Egypt. There is the principle. In our present misery, there can be no salvation without a rational and sincere return to the principle. And this return is the necessary action of Symbolism in poetry and art…”

Book The Structure of Paintings

Download or read book The Structure of Paintings written by Michael Leyton and published by Springer. This book was released on 2007-07-07 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Michael Leyton has developed new foundations for geometry in which shape is equivalent to memory storage. A principal argument of these foundations is that artworks are maximal memory stores. The theory of geometry is developed from Leyton's fundamental laws of memory storage, and this book shows that these laws determine the structure of paintings. Furthermore, the book demonstrates that the emotion expressed by a painting is actually the memory extracted by the laws. Therefore, the laws of memory storage allow the systematic and rigorous mapping not only of the compositional structure of a painting, but also of its emotional expression. The argument is supported by detailed analyses of paintings by Picasso, Raphael, Cezanne, Gauguin, Modigliani, Ingres, De Kooning, Memling, Balthus and Holbein.
