Download or read book Regional Development in an Age of Structural Economic Change written by Piet Rietveld and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2024-02-22 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1999, this volume addresses various themes in regional development studies from the perspective of structural economic change. Particular attention is paid to factors having long-run implications for regional development, such as innovation and knowledge production. Innovation and research and development activities appear to take place at particular locations. This has implications for long-run spatial and sectoral developments. Another factor is transport infrastructure; its impact on efficiency and equity is surveyed. Other themes covered relate to the role of tourism and adjustments in urban economies. The books aims to offer a balance between modelling and non-modelling approaches. In addition to country-specific contributions, some are offered at the European level.

Book excerpt: The rural areas of Britain, Europe and the developed world are undergoing massive changes, with increasing concern about productivity, agricultural methods and environmental policy. Rural Politics examines the issues affecting rural areas, such as water pollution, forestry, and the greening of agricultural policy. It looks in particular at the political parameters to these issues and how concern for the countryside is essentially a part of a wider set of political processes. Rural Politics provides a much needed examination of the evolution and content of policies affecting today's countryside, both in terms of major land uses and economic and social development.

Book The Rural Economy and the British Countryside

Download or read book The Rural Economy and the British Countryside written by Paul Allanson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-04-23 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mention of the British countryside commonly evokes visions of pastoral contentment; but the nature of rural Britain has changed dramatically since 1945. The declining importance of farming as a source of income and employment in the course of this century has undermined the simple identity of the rural economy with the agricultural sector. The social composition of many villages has been transformed by incomers who commute to nearby towns and cities for their work. And EU policy is playing an increasingly important role in both the regulation of the countryside and the promotion of development through structural assistance programmes. The Rural Economy and the British Countryside offers critical perspectives on the changing profile of rural Britain by leading contributors in the field. It considers the meaning of the term 'rural' and what might constitute a sustainable rural economy; present and future patterns of rural development; the role of markets; natural resource management; agricultural pollution; marketing policies in the agricultural sector; environmental valuation techniques; rural policies and politics; and the future of the rural political economy. Written by a team of experts at the Centre for Rural Economy, which took a leading role in the debate surrounding preparation of the 1995 Rural White Paper, the book is ideal for students of rural and environmental policy, countryside management, planning and recreation, rural geography, and agriculture and environmental studies courses. Paul Allanson is a Lecturer in Economics at the University of Dundee, specialising in evolutionary economics and structural change in agriculture. Martin Whitby is Professor of Countryside Management at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, and is the author of Incentives for Countryside Management: the Case of ESAs and the European Environment and CAP Reform, among other titles. Book The Future of the Land

Download or read book The Future of the Land written by Louise O. Fresco and published by . This book was released on 1994-11-29 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the increasing awareness of the fragility of the earth's resources, and the rising demands of a growing and diverse population, land use planning is evolving into a multi-disciplinary process of continuous interaction with different land users and constant readjustment to accommodate their divergent needs. It is more critical than ever to plan for the use of land resources, using the application of indigenous knowledge and the rapidly developing capabilities of information technology. The Future of the Land provides an overview of the concepts and methodologies of land evaluation and the formulation of land use options and scenarios. The book is structured around issues of land use planning methodology at four different scales, these being supranational, national, regional and farm. A total of seven case studies representing these four different scales are presented, illustrating common features of the agroclimatic and economic zones of the world. An essential feature of each study is the presentation of different perspectives of land use planning including those of the land users, scientists and decision-makers. This approach illustrates the requirements and interests of different parties, which may serve as a basis for negotiation. This book shows that despite the great technical advances of recent years, and our increased knowledge of the resource base, the challenges of land use planning are bewildering. The mobilisation and integration of knowledge for the development of land use options is an essential part of the solution.
