Book The Temple of George Herbert

Download or read book The Temple of George Herbert written by C. S. Lim and published by Partridge Publishing Singapore. This book was released on 2018-09-12 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Professor C. S. Lim had a fondness for the metaphysical poets of the seventeenth century. A devout Christian, he loved the poetry of Donne, Marvell, and especially George Herbert. Lim found the poems beautiful, and he had a fascination for the themes of God and death and love. He began a dissertation in 1973 as a postgraduate student at the University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur. Lim died from cancer in 2011, and his wife, Rema Lim, published this little-known thesis that offers a rhetorical reading of Herberts The Temple and contributes to the understanding of the man himself. Praise for The Temple of George Herbert C.S. Lims remarkable study of George Herberts poetry goes a long way in reaffirming the importance of rhetoric in the literary world of seventeenth-century poets. Written forty years ago, it exhibits a kind of scholarship and insight that has become rare these days. Professor Lims analysis of the poems in The Temple shows the depth of Herberts rhetorical studies and also provides important insights into the nature of poetic language in the English Renaissance. The work also touches upon John Wesleys adaptations of Herberts poems. Professor Amlan DasGupta, Department of English, Jadavpur University, Kolkata 700032, India

Book Remembered Words

Download or read book Remembered Words written by Alastair Fowler and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2021 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Remembered Words is a selection of Alastair Fowler's essays on genre, realism, and the emblem (three interrelated subjects), published over six decades. It offers readers a way to arrive at a sense of how approaches to these subjects have changed over that period. Specifically, it shows how genre has come to be understood in terms of family resemblance theory. Remembered Words argues that realism can be seen as altering historically, so that Renaissance realism, for example, differs from those of later periods. Similar changes are traced in the emblem, which Fowler shows to be not only a particular genre, but an element of various kinds of realism. Famous passages in ancient literature are remembered in the familiar emblems of the Renaissance; and Renaissance emblems form the basis of metaphors in later literature. Meanwhile, the general approach of the critic and the reader has been altering over the years--as becomes evident when one takes into account the time-scale of sixty years (an unusually long working life for a critic). Modern theoretical approaches--which are often casually regarded as self-evident--may appear less inevitable and more arbitrary. This is not to say that they are necessarily wrong, just that they need to be argued for. Remembered Words is intended for senior undergraduates and for graduate students, who may use it to form ideas of Fowler's approach and that of his contemporaries and predecessors over the last half century.

Book Religion Reform and Women s Writing in Early Modern England

Download or read book Religion Reform and Women s Writing in Early Modern England written by Kimberly Anne Coles and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2008-01-17 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long considered marginal in early modern culture, women writers were actually central to the development of a Protestant literary tradition in England. Kimberly Anne Coles explores their contribution to this tradition through thorough archival research in publication history and book circulation; the interaction of women's texts with those written by men; and the traceable influence of women's writing upon other contemporary literary works. Focusing primarily upon Katherine Parr, Anne Askew, Mary Sidney Herbert, and Anne Vaughan Lok, Coles argues that the writings of these women were among the most popular and influential works of sixteenth-century England. This book is full of prevalent material and fresh analysis for scholars of early modern literature, culture and religious history.
