  • Pages : 416 pages

Download or read book Musical Form and Analysis written by Glenn Spring and published by Waveland Press. This book was released on 2013-08-29 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding the way music unfolds to the listener is a major key for unlocking the secrets of the composer’s art. Musical Form and Analysis, highly regarded and widely used for two decades, provides a balanced theoretical and philosophical approach that helps upper-level undergraduate music majors understand the structures and constructions of major musical forms. Spring and Hutcheson present all of the standard topics expected in such a text, but their approach offers a unique conceptual thrust that takes readers beyond mere analytical terminology and facts. Evocative rather than encyclopedic, the text is organized around three elements at work at all levels of music: time, pattern, and proportion. Well-chosen examples and direct, well-crafted assignments reinforce techniques. A 140-page anthology of music for in-depth analysis provides a wide range of carefully selected works.

Book Jesus Exposition of the Old Testament in Luke s Gospel

Download or read book Jesus Exposition of the Old Testament in Luke s Gospel written by Charles Kimball and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 1994-03-01 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work presents an inductive, exegetical analysis of Jesus' exegetical methods and expositions in Luke's Gospel in light of first-century Jewish exegetical methods via an examination of the eight Lukan pericopes in which Jesus expounds explicit Old Testament quotations. This study offers the following conclusions: In Luke's Gospel Jesus expounded Scripture as the basis for understanding his person and ministry, teaching his followers and inquirers, and debating his religious opponents. He employed many of the exegetical methods of ancient Judaism. Yet he frequently offered interpretations of Scripture that were radically different from other Jewish teachers because of his superior understanding of Scripture and his application of Scripture to himself. In turn, he influenced the early church's biblical expositions in considerable measure. Jesus expounded Scripture for Christological and doctrinal lessons. In his Christological expositions, he made an eschatological application of certain biblical texts to himself, claiming to be the fulfillment of Old testament messianic prophecies. In his doctrinal expositions, he corrected traditional Jewish interpretation, claiming a superior exegesis of Scripture. The Christological expositions employed pesher fulfillment motifs and several midrashic techiniques to show that the

Book Computational Music Analysis

Download or read book Computational Music Analysis written by David Meredith and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-10-27 with total page 483 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an in-depth introduction and overview of current research in computational music analysis. Its seventeen chapters, written by leading researchers, collectively represent the diversity as well as the technical and philosophical sophistication of the work being done today in this intensely interdisciplinary field. A broad range of approaches are presented, employing techniques originating in disciplines such as linguistics, information theory, information retrieval, pattern recognition, machine learning, topology, algebra and signal processing. Many of the methods described draw on well-established theories in music theory and analysis, such as Forte's pitch-class set theory, Schenkerian analysis, the methods of semiotic analysis developed by Ruwet and Nattiez, and Lerdahl and Jackendoff's Generative Theory of Tonal Music. The book is divided into six parts, covering methodological issues, harmonic and pitch-class set analysis, form and voice-separation, grammars and hierarchical reduction, motivic analysis and pattern discovery and, finally, classification and the discovery of distinctive patterns. As a detailed and up-to-date picture of current research in computational music analysis, the book provides an invaluable resource for researchers, teachers and students in music theory and analysis, computer science, music information retrieval and related disciplines. It also provides a state-of-the-art reference for practitioners in the music technology industry.

Book Prophecy and Hermeneutic in Early Christianity

Download or read book Prophecy and Hermeneutic in Early Christianity written by E. Earle Ellis and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2003-06-12 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Prophecy and Hermeneutic in Early Christianity' was written with the conviction that the New Testament presents to its readers not merely the opinions of Christian writers, but also the message of God mediated through faithful prophets. These prophets initiated and interpreted the first proclamation of the Christian faith - a proclamation that continues to enlighten and to guide the church, for it provides a key to the church's history and theology. The prophets in this study are the pneumatics, those early Christians who are characterized by spiritual gifts of inspired speech and discernment, who are coworkers of Paul engaged in preaching and teaching. While some were perverting their gifts and thereby causing strife in the church, Paul's companions had an active role in its missionary enterprise. Dr. Ellis examines the dispute between the two parties which threatened to destroy the unity and faith of the church. The pneumatics were involved in the formulation of a Christian theology of the Old Testament through their exposition and application of Scripture. Dr. Ellis describes and elaborates upon the interpretative principles which they used. He concludes with a critique of the older form criticism of the gospels and suggests some new directions for understanding the history of the transmission of the teaching of Jesus.

Book The Memory Trace PLE Memory

Download or read book The Memory Trace PLE Memory written by Erich Goldmeier and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2014-05-09 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There was some agreement about what memory traces were not, but little about what actually did characterize the memory trace. Yet models and theories of memory at the time could not help making implicit and often unrecognized assumptions about the memory trace. Originally published in 1982, this title aimed to strengthen the meagre base on which memory theories rested at the time. It challenges old assumptions and introduces new concepts, foremost the notion of singularity, as they become necessary to understand traces adequately. Some research data of the past was found in need of reinterpretation. The result is a new theory of the memory trace.

Book Elemental Design Patterns

Download or read book Elemental Design Patterns written by Jason McC. Smith and published by Addison-Wesley. This book was released on 2012-03-23 with total page 513 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2012 Jolt Award Finalist! Even experienced software professionals find it difficult to apply patterns in ways that deliver substantial value to their organizations. In Elemental Design Patterns, Jason McC. Smith addresses this problem head-on, helping developers harness the true power of patterns, map them to real software implementations more cleanly and directly, and achieve far better results. Part tutorial, part example-rich cookbook, this resource will help developers, designers, architects, and analysts successfully use patterns with a wide variety of languages, environments, and problem domains. Every bit as important, it will give them a deeper appreciation for the work they’ve chosen to pursue. Smith presents the crucial missing link that patterns practitioners have needed: a foundational collection of simple core patterns that are broken down to their core elements. If you work in software, you may already be using some of these elemental design patterns every day. Presenting them in a comprehensive methodology for the first time, Smith names them, describes them, explains their importance, helps you compare and choose among them, and offers a framework for using them together. He also introduces an innovative Pattern Instance Notation diagramming system that makes it easier to work with patterns at many levels of granularity, regardless of your goals or role. If you’re new to patterns, this example-rich approach will help you master them piece by piece, logically and intuitively. If you’re an experienced patterns practitioner, Smith follows the Gang of Four format you’re already familiar with, explains how his elemental patterns can be composed into conventional design patterns, and introduces highly productive new ways to apply ideas you’ve already encountered. No matter what your level of experience, this infinitely practical book will help you transform abstract patterns into high-value solutions.

Book The Rich Cut Glass of Charles Guernsey Tuthill

Download or read book The Rich Cut Glass of Charles Guernsey Tuthill written by Maurice Crofford and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In this detailed narrative of the business Tuthill founded, the patterns he created, the techniques he used, and the other artisans and consumers he knew, Maurice Crofford has written the story of an earlier, more elegant and leisurely era. For those knowledgeable about cut glass, the development of the forms will be instructive; for others, who simply appreciate the beauty of the glass, the numerous black and white photographs will appeal. Beyond both of those dimensions, however, Crofford provides a fascinating insight into the ways industrialization and mass production and, more especially, the automobile, changed forever the ways upper-class Americans lived, entertained, and displayed their good fortune. In Tuthill's career, moreover, Crofford finds an example of American ingenuity and creative genius in responding to changing times."--BOOK JACKET.
