Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Millions of Americans experience some degree of hearing loss. The Social Security Administration (SSA) operates programs that provide cash disability benefits to people with permanent impairments like hearing loss, if they can show that their impairments meet stringent SSA criteria and their earnings are below an SSA threshold. The National Research Council convened an expert committee at the request of the SSA to study the issues related to disability determination for people with hearing loss. This volume is the product of that study. Hearing Loss: Determining Eligibility for Social Security Benefits reviews current knowledge about hearing loss and its measurement and treatment, and provides an evaluation of the strengths and weaknesses of the current processes and criteria. It recommends changes to strengthen the disability determination process and ensure its reliability and fairness. The book addresses criteria for selection of pure tone and speech tests, guidelines for test administration, testing of hearing in noise, special issues related to testing children, and the difficulty of predicting work capacity from clinical hearing test results. It should be useful to audiologists, otolaryngologists, disability advocates, and others who are concerned with people who have hearing loss.

Book excerpt: This book is a response to literally hundreds of concerned parents and teachers as well as clinicians in communication disorders who are baffled by the behavior of certain children who though having normal hearing and intelligence, yet behave as though they are hearing-impaired and are falling behind academically. These children experience much difficult understanding what they are told. In the classroom they are misunderstood as they seem to mis-hear information. They are usually socially isolated and labeled as unintelligent. Though many of them behave as if they are hearing impaired, yet hearing tests reveal that their hearing is normal. They persist in saying "What?" or "Huh?" "What did you say?". . . so often, and appear so lost at times in understanding simple instructions that teachers and parents are convinced they have a hearing problem. These children are said to have what is known as a "central auditory processing disorder (CAPD)." This is a problem of impaired listening due to poor processing capabilities. The book offers an explanation as to what causes these behaviors, and provides practical suggested solutions to this problem. What is contained •How Poor Listening Skills Affect your Child's Ability to Learn: What Causes the Problem? What Teachers and Parents Ought to Know about how children process information! •The child's communication developmental model from birth to school-age. Book The Mislabeled Child

Book excerpt: An incredibly reassuring approach by two physicians who specialize in helping children overcome their difficulties in learning and succeeding in school For parents, teachers, and other professionals seeking practical guidance about ways to help children with learning problems, this book provides a comprehensive look at learning differences ranging from dyslexia to dysgraphia, to attention problems, to giftedness. In The Mislabeled Child, the authors describe how a proper understanding of a child's unique brain-based strengths can be used to overcome many different obstacles to learning. They show how children are often mislabeled with diagnoses that are too broad (ADHD, for instance) or are simply inaccurate. They also explain why medications are often not the best ways to help children who are struggling to learn. The authors guide readers through the morass of commonly used labels and treatments, offering specific suggestions that can be used to help children at school and at home. This book offers extremely empowering information for parents and professionals alike. The Mislabeled Child examines a full spectrum of learning disorders, from dyslexia to giftedness, clarifying the diagnoses and providing resources to help. The Eides explain how a learning disability encompasses more than a behavioral problem; it is also a brain dysfunction that should be treated differently.

Book Perspectives on Individual Differences Affecting Therapeutic Change in Communication Disorders

Download or read book Perspectives on Individual Differences Affecting Therapeutic Change in Communication Disorders written by Amy L. Weiss and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume examines the ramifications of individual differences in therapy outcomes for a wide variety of communication disorders. In an era where evidence-based practice is the clinical profession's watchword, each chapter attacks this highly relevant issue from a somewhat different perspective. In some areas of communication disorders, considering the variance brought by the client into the therapeutic 'mix' has a healthy history, whereas in others the notion of how individual client profiles mesh with therapy outcomes has rarely been considered. Through the use of research results, case study descriptions and speculation, the contributors have creatively woven what we know and what we have yet to substantiate into an interesting collection of summaries useful for therapy programming and designing clinical research.
