Rubenstein Technology has traditionally advanced faster than our ability to manage it. Here is a book designed to assist the professional in furthering the corporate technology program through its effective management. Based on studies of over 200 decentralized firms spanning a period of thirty years, Managing Technology in the Decentralized Firm addresses crucial aspects of the research and development and innovation processes, and suggests how to make them pay off. 1989 (0 471-61024-0) 476 pp. Statistical Quality Control for Manufacturing Managers William S. Messina In today’s competitive environment, the responsibility of the manufacturing manager has expanded to include ownership of the quality of the products coming off the line. The author uses real-life business situations to demonstrate how a manager can incorporate statistical quality control (SQC) into virtually any manufacturing line. He also offers practical advice on techniques managers can use to improve quality, increase productivity, and enhance the competitive position of the line. 1987 (0 471-85774-2) 331 pp. Management of Technological Change Yassin Sankar Technology produces changes within the organization that must be considered for effective implementation of innovations. This book focuses on the dynamics of technological change, especially the human aspects. The author examines the impact of technological change on job design, work flow, job stress, the elements of corporate culture, the organizational system, the information technology of the organization, the leadership style and strategic premises, the organizational design, and the value systems of managers and the organization. 1991 (0 471-63147-7) 374 pp.

Book Advanced Manufacturing Technologies and Workforce Development

Download or read book Advanced Manufacturing Technologies and Workforce Development written by Nancy E. Waldeck and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-01-14 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examines the relationship between organizational performance, advanced manufacturing technologies and workforce development activities. In response to domestic and international competitive pressures, manufacturers are making increasing expenditures in both labor and technology. Both corporate and government surveys report that billions of dollars a year are spent for worker training and new technology by U.S. manufacturers. Despite these expenditures, little empirical evidence exists about the relationship between worker development activities and advanced technologies or the organizational outcomes from their combined use. In this study, multiple workforce development activities and advanced technology were defined and compared to several types of organizational performance at a variety of manufacturing plants in the Midwest. Human resource managers completed surveys that assessed areas of worker development, technology, environment and technology-driven workplace needs. Results indicate modest support for the relationship between technology, workforce development and organizational performance. Strong support, however, was found for the relationship between relational and skill needs due to changes in technology and the plant emphasis on process and individual worker development. This suggest that managerial perceptions regarding workplace changes from technology may be amore important factor than the technology itself in determining the type of workforce development activities provided. In addition, findings supported the use of multiple workforce development activities.

Book Predictive Theoretical and Computational Approaches for Additive Manufacturing

Download or read book Predictive Theoretical and Computational Approaches for Additive Manufacturing written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2016-12-21 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Additive manufacturing (AM) methods have great potential for promoting transformative research in many fields across the vast spectrum of engineering and materials science. AM is one of the leading forms of advanced manufacturing which enables direct computer-aided design (CAD) to part production without part-specific tooling. In October 2015 the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine convened a workshop of experts from diverse communities to examine predictive theoretical and computational approaches for various AM technologies. While experimental workshops in AM have been held in the past, this workshop uniquely focused on theoretical and computational approaches and involved areas such as simulation-based engineering and science, integrated computational materials engineering, mechanics, materials science, manufacturing processes, and other specialized areas. This publication summarizes the presentations and discussions from the workshop.

Book Patterns of Advanced Manufacturing Technology AMT Use in Canadian Manufacturing

Download or read book Patterns of Advanced Manufacturing Technology AMT Use in Canadian Manufacturing written by and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents the results of an analysis of the 1998 Advanced Manufacturing Technologies (AMT) Survey of Advanced Technologies in Canadian Manufacturing, conducted by Statistics Canada. The survey covers the use & planned use of 26 AMTs at the establishment level, based on responses from about 3,700 manufacturing plants. Additional information was obtained on skill requirements, technology development & implementation practices, the results of technology adoption, barriers to adoption, and the firm's research & development activities. The analysis focusses on identifying the patterns of technology use by manufacturing plants, and results are compared to those of previous research. The report organization reflects the categorization of factors correlated with technology use in five categories: technology-related factors such as type of production system; plant-level factors such as size & ownership; management-related factors such as business strategies, and environmental factors, or influences external to the plant, such as availability of skilled workers. In addition, the report examines the effects of selected factors in relation to AMT investment over the previous three years and plans for AMT adoption in the coming two years. Other chapters discuss the analysis method, the basic indicators of AMT use, and the reported benefits of AMT use.
