Book excerpt: Physical and psychological aggression in dating relationships is prevalent among college students (e.g., Kaura & Lohman, 2007; Shook, Gerrity, Jurich, & Segrist, 2000; Straus, 2008), and students experiencing dating IPV are most likely to speak to friends (Prospero & Vohra-Gupta, 2008). The current study investigated differences in perceptions of heterosexual dating IPV and help-seeking recommendations for a friend as a function of scenario type (e.g., male perpetrator/female victim and female perpetrator/male victim) and participant sex. The study also examined gender role attitudes and attitudes toward dating violence that have been associated with perceptions of dating IPV (e.g., Berkel et al., 2004; Coleman & Stith, 1997; Hillier & Foddy, 1993; Hilton, Harris, & Rice, 2003; Willis, Hallinan, & Melby, 1996). A college sample (N=200) read a dating IPV scenario depicting either male-to-female or female-to-male dating IPV. A series of 2x2 ANCOVAs, controlling for previous exposure to IPV and attitudes toward seeking professional psychological help, showed that women were more likely than men to hold more egalitarian gender role attitudes, be less accepting of dating violence, perceive the behaviors in the dating scenario as more serious, and be more likely to recommend that a friend seek help at the counseling center. Participants were more likely to recommend the counseling center for female victims than male victims. Path analysis results provided initial support for a theoretical model of counseling center help-seeking recommendations.

For example, there are indications that nearly 30% of married women in this country are victims of physical abuse by spouses at some point in their marriage. Further, FBI statistics show that approximately 13% of all homicides are husband-wife killings. Moreover, it has been projected that such figures are likely to increase over the next several years. Consistent with these trends, funding of family violence research by both federal and private agencies has increased. Indeed, federal agencies, such as the National Institute of Mental Health and the National Institute of Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice, have provided considerable support for work in this area. In addition, family violence, particu larly wifebattering, child abuse, and sexual abuse of children has been the focus of media attention at the national level, and has generated intensive interest in both lay and profes sional publications. Moreover, there have been several recent governmental hearings and investigations regarding the prevalence of these problems.

Book excerpt: The current dissertation examined the temporal relationship between dating violence (DV) victimization and alcohol use, the moderating role of self-control between this relationship, and differences in drinking patterns between unidirectional and bidirectional violence. One hundred and eighty-one couples completed surveys for 60 consecutive days and reported on their DV experiences, alcohol use, and variables related to selfcontrol depletion. Results partially supported study hypotheses. Participants were significantly more likely to engage in heavy drinking after physical DV victimization and drank a significantly greater number of drinks. Contrary to study hypotheses, participants were less likely to drink after psychological and sexual violence. When considering the direction of violence, participants were more likely to drink after bidirectional sexual violence compared to unidirectional violence, but no other significant results emerged. Regarding moderation, on days where self-control was low participants were generally more likely to drink. Significant interactions emerged between DV victimization and selfcontrol, such that on days with low self- ontrol, individuals who had experienced sexual violence were more likely to engage in heavy drinking, and individuals who had experience physical violence were more likely to drink. The moderated association for sexual victimization was stronger when DV was bidirectional. Some gender differences emerged in exploratory analyses, such that men consumed a higher number of drinks than women after physical violence. Additionally, a three- way interaction emerged indicating that the moderating relationship between self-control and physical victimization was stronger for men relative to women. Additionally, the relationship between self-control and drinking on days after sexual DV victimization was stronger among men with better self-control. Implications of results and directions for future research are discussed.

Book excerpt: This study explores factors that are predictive of dating violence victimization among 4,490 adolescents aged 11-17 years with public-use data from Waves I and II of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health. Individual-level factors included self-esteem, depressive symptoms, high-risk alcohol use, and marijuana use. Mesosystem factors included parental monitoring and religiosity. A logistic regression analysis controlled for sex, age, race, and sexual attraction. Results showed that higher levels of depressive symptoms and substance use were associated with an increased likelihood of victimization, whereas self-esteem was not significant. Higher levels of parental monitoring and religiosity were associated with a decreased likelihood of dating violence victimization, suggesting these may have a protective influence. These results have practical implications for violence prevention strategies with policy recommendations put forth to adapt existing healthy relationship education curricula to specific subgroups that may be at an increased risk for victimization.

Book excerpt: This honors thesis attempts to find the prevalence of intimate partner violence (IVP) at the Pennsylvania State University - University Park Campus. It primarily tests the General Strain Theory to evaluate if IVP can have a significant effect on mental health which in turn would affect an individual's college GPA. To answer this question, a survey using a modified version of the Conflict Tactic Scale (Strauss 2004), a scale often used by researchers to measure dating and relationship violence, was distributed anonymously in various classes on campus. Ultimately, the study obtained 70 participants but because not all participants answered all of the questions, the results of 56 participants were evaluated. Results showed that there is no impact of IPV on college GPA; however, the only thing we found to be consistent with the general strain theory is that mental health is a significant predictor of college GPA, however, based on this study we cannot accurately and distinctly trace mental health with IPV. Further analysis needs to be in place in order to determine the relationship between IPV and mental health and then the relationship to GPA.
