Book The Growth of Intra Industry Trade

Download or read book The Growth of Intra Industry Trade written by Leonie L. Stone and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2021-10-28 with total page 105 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 1997. The explosive growth of world trade in the last three decades is unparalleled in history, both due to the rapid increase in volume and to the change in the composition of trade. Historically, trade between nations has consisted largely of exchanges of products that were very different from each other, neither closely substitutable in consumption nor production processes. However, in this latest period of trade expansion, the majority of the increase in world trade has been in manufactured goods, many of which are highly substitutable differentiated products. This has led to growth in intra-industry trade, the cross-shipment of similar products. This study links increased shares of intra-industry trade with growth in newly-industrializing countries. To examine these questions, this study first gives a review of existing literature, both theoretical and empirical. Five hypotheses on intra-industry trade are then discussed. A model is then presented and estimated, using data on bilateral trade between the United States and its five major trading partners, Canada, Japan, France, Germany, and the United Kingdom.

Book Changing Trade Patterns in Manufactured Goods An Econometric Investigation

Download or read book Changing Trade Patterns in Manufactured Goods An Econometric Investigation written by B. Balassa and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-06-28 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume examines the changing pattern of trade in manufactured goods by the use of econometric techniques. The method of investigation employed is cross-section analysis of data for thirty-eight developed and developing countries, for each of which manufactured goods accounted for at least 18 percent of total exports and surpassed $300 million in 1979. The results may further be interpreted in terms of the changes that occur in the pattern of specialization in the process of economic development.

Book The Pattern and Determinants of Intra Industry Trade in Australian Manufacturing

Download or read book The Pattern and Determinants of Intra Industry Trade in Australian Manufacturing written by Kishor Sharma and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper presents the pattern and determinants of intra-industry trade (IIT) in Australian manufacturing since the late 1970s. The results point to a sharp rise in IIT from the mid 1980s which appears to be linked with an outward-oriented policy. Industry-level analysis indicates that industries which experienced a sharp fall in protection are the industries with the higher levels of IIT. These include textiles, garments, rubber products, and machinery and equipment. An increasing trend in IIT suggests that the short-term adjustment costs associated with trade liberalisation are likely to be lower, and that liberalisation can proceed without huge short-term adjustment costs. Using a logit model the determinants of IIT are investigated. Results indicate that IIT is positively related to product differentiation and scale economies, and negatively related to the levels of protection and foreign ownership in the pre-liberalisation period. In the post-liberalisation period, however, scale economies explain the inter-industry variations in IIT. R&D intensity and close economic integration appear to have no impact on IIT regardless of the nature of the policy regime.

Book Intra industry International Trade

Download or read book Intra industry International Trade written by Sayeeda Bano and published by Aldershot, Hants, England : Avebury ; Brookfield, Vt., USA : Gower Publishing Company. This book was released on 1991 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the concept, measurement and theory of intra-industry international trade. It includes an intensive study of Canada during a period of dramatic changes in the world economy. For the first time methods used to analyse IIT in other countries (notably, Balassa, EEC, Grubel-Lloyd, Australia, OECD) have been applied to examine the Canadian case. Alternative measurements of IIT are examined, resulting in discussion of a wide range of theoretical, empirical and policy aspects. The results reveal that the extent of Canada's IIT is remarkably high both across countries and across industries. Time-series analysis indicated that a substantial growth in IIT has taken place over the years 1962-87.

Book Competing in a Global Economy

Download or read book Competing in a Global Economy written by Robert Ballance and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2003-08-29 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global patterns of production and trade in manufactures have changed tremendously over the past two decades. The growth of world trade has been accompanied by a rapid increase in the number of products, suppliers and buyers involved in international markets. At the same time, the means by which manufacturers compete and collaborate have been changing. The great challenges that these developments pose for policy makers and practitioners provide the basic motive for this comprehensive assessment of the underlying forces and determinants that are reshaping the world's industrial map. Based upon an empirical approach, the analysis is closely interwoven with key elements of economic theory. the Heckscher-Ohlin model provides the framework for most of the book's interpretation, but less formal models focusing on economies of scale, product differentiation and other aspects of imperfect competition also figure prominently. The extensive research with access to UNIDO's vast body of unpublished information and contributions from specialists, has resulted in a blend of theoretical and empirical material which yields new insights into the way firms and industries compete in international markets.

Parts I and II cover the pioneering research in the 1960s and a number of models of intra-industry trade that were developed from 1979 to the present day. Parts III and IV look at the empirical research problems in the choice of measure of intra-industry trade and empirical studies that seek to identify the nature of this trade. Part V deals with the role of the multinational corporation and part VI completes the collection with articles that look at extensions to asset markets and applications to other problems such as the geography of trade and rules of origin. Intra-Industry Trade will be an invaluable source of reference to all international trade economists and libraries specialising in this area.
