Book Netting Out Basketball 1936

Download or read book Netting Out Basketball 1936 written by Rich Hughes and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2011-11 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 1936 was the most significant year in basketball’s first half century. For the first time, Olympic basketball ended with a gold medal game. Dr. James Naismith was honored at the Berlin Olympics for his wonderful invention, as basketball achieved widespread international acceptance in a short period of time. 45 years after creating an exciting indoor sport for a physical education class, Naismith watched 23 countries vie for the gold. Boycotts protested Hitler’s policies within the Olympic host country of Germany, and as a result, politics and sports were forever linked. Other meaningful firsts for the 1935-36 playing season included controversy in the US Olympic Tryout system, a problematic lack of funding for US Olympians, and the actualization of new basketball strategies. Fast breaking offenses, dunking the ball, and full court zone pressure were important new techniques that radically changed the game. This book tells the little known story of the 1936 team which transformed basketball. The book documents the McPherson Refiners significant role in developing basketball’s faster, dynamic playing style. The mishaps and fortunes of the Refiners and three other AAU teams who placed men on Berlin’s muddy clay court will be the focus of the book.

Download or read book Beyond the Bridge written by R. D. Lock and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2011-07-11 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seeking a job as a first-year teacher, Robin Robertson heads for an interview at the Westminster Rural Agricultural Schools in the spring of 1956. Here, Robin could teach and also coach varsity basketball and counsel students. Amid the pressures of beginning a new career, he starts to wonder whether a big-city person like himself can adapt adequately to the lifestyle of small-town, rural America. This story pictures a way of life that has vanished in all too many places. Many readers will relate to the challenges, conflicts, and rewards between students and an untried but idealistic teacher. Others will recall athletic contests won and lost and perhaps will remember counseling that went way beyond arranging school schedules. The author draws upon forty-three years of educational experience in high school and community college -- focusing on that memorable first year in front of a classroom, being in charge of the community's "Winter Entertainment Committee" (basketball games), and creating a newly mandated school guidance program.

Book The Basketball Coach s Primer

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Basketball Coach’s Primer is a resource of basketball ideas. It is written for coaches ready to review the principles and methods of the game before getting started with a new team, or for renewing coaches reviewing for the next season of basketball. Reviewing and renewing to gain greater understanding makes the game better for all the people of basketball. The basketball content or substance herein is not the authoritative “last” word but this study puts forward the important ideas for developing the players and the game at a fundamental level. This resource provides a synopsis of essentials, including a comprehensive outline of the basic maneuvers and processes for developing the skills and mobility of the players. A substantial quantity of relevant game-specific basketball applications are added to the mix of ideas for good measure. The Basketball Coach’s Primer also lays the basis for a more advanced game if needed.
