Worship has been fundamental to the community since it began: it is the mainspring of all its activities and the beginning and end of its commitment to world peace, social justice and the recovery of an integrated spirituality. Ever since the original members worked and worshipped together while rebuilding the Abbey on the Isle of Iona, the aim of the Iona Community has been to integrate work, worship and recreation into one daily, practical spiritual path. Designed to encourage creativity in worship, this book includes liturgies for pilgrimage and journeys; healing; acts of witness and dissent; and safe space and empowerment. A section of resources includes prayers of concern, forgiveness, thanksgiving and blessing, and reflections and meditations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You can use this book to design a house for yourself with your family; you can use it to work with your neighbors to improve your town and neighborhood; you can use it to design an office, or a workshop, or a public building. And you can use it to guide you in the actual process of construction. After a ten-year silence, Christopher Alexander and his colleagues at the Center for Environmental Structure are now publishing a major statement in the form of three books which will, in their words, "lay the basis for an entirely new approach to architecture, building and planning, which will we hope replace existing ideas and practices entirely." The three books are The Timeless Way of Building, The Oregon Experiment, and this book, A Pattern Language. At the core of these books is the idea that people should design for themselves their own houses, streets, and communities. This idea may be radical (it implies a radical transformation of the architectural profession) but it comes simply from the observation that most of the wonderful places of the world were not made by architects but by the people. At the core of the books, too, is the point that in designing their environments people always rely on certain "languages," which, like the languages we speak, allow them to articulate and communicate an infinite variety of designs within a forma system which gives them coherence. This book provides a language of this kind. It will enable a person to make a design for almost any kind of building, or any part of the built environment. "Patterns," the units of this language, are answers to design problems (How high should a window sill be? How many stories should a building have? How much space in a neighborhood should be devoted to grass and trees?). More than 250 of the patterns in this pattern language are given: each consists of a problem statement, a discussion of the problem with an illustration, and a solution. As the authors say in their introduction, many of the patterns are archetypal, so deeply rooted in the nature of things that it seemly likely that they will be a part of human nature, and human action, as much in five hundred years as they are today.

Book excerpt: Each of us was placed on this earth for a certain number of days. Time is precious, and you don’t want to waste it. You desire a life that has meaning and purpose but you find yourself caught in a current of non-stop rushing. When this becomes your existence, day after day, you find you’ve lived a series of months, even years, unintentionally. In the middle of all of this is the suffocating presence of anxiety. You want a life that matters, but how do you do that in the middle of...life? How do you use the struggle of anxiety as a path to a life of meaning? With short daily devotions and practical application, Numbering Our Days encourages you to move out of maintenance mode and away from the spiral of anxiety and into a life lived with intention. Anxiety doesn’t have to define you. It can be what brings you back to Jesus, living a life that brings Him glory and points others to Him. This book will help you to pause, reflect with Scripture, and take action to combat anxiety and start living intentionally, one moment at a time. Because small moments, day by day, add up to an intentional life.

Book The Pattern Seekers

  • Author : Simon Baron-Cohen
  • Publisher : Basic Books
  • Release : 2020-11-10

  • Pages : 245 pages

Download or read book The Pattern Seekers written by Simon Baron-Cohen and published by Basic Books. This book was released on 2020-11-10 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A groundbreaking argument about the link between autism and ingenuity. Why can humans alone invent? In The Pattern Seekers, Cambridge University psychologist Simon Baron-Cohen makes a case that autism is as crucial to our creative and cultural history as the mastery of fire. Indeed, Baron-Cohen argues that autistic people have played a key role in human progress for seventy thousand years, from the first tools to the digital revolution. How? Because the same genes that cause autism enable the pattern seeking that is essential to our species's inventiveness. However, these abilities exact a great cost on autistic people, including social and often medical challenges, so Baron-Cohen calls on us to support and celebrate autistic people in both their disabilities and their triumphs. Ultimately, The Pattern Seekers isn't just a new theory of human civilization, but a call to consider anew how society treats those who think differently.

Book Our Days Are Numbered

Download or read book Our Days Are Numbered written by Jason Brown and published by Emblem Editions. This book was released on 2010-04-27 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A revealing and entertaining look at the world, as viewed through mathematical eyeglasses. From the moment our feet touch the floor in the morning until our head hits the pillow, numbers are everywhere. And yet most of us go through each day unaware of the mathematics that shapes our lives. In fact, many people go through life fearing and avoiding mathematics, making choices that keep it at arm’s length or further. Even basic math — like arithmetic — can seem baffling. In Our Days Are Numbered, Jason Brown leads the reader through a typical day, on a fascinating journey. He shows us the world through a mathematician's eyes and reveals the huge role that mathematics plays in our lives. It lies hidden within the electronics we use, the banking we do, and even the leisure activities we enjoy. Whether we’re putting a down payment on a new car, reading the financial pages, or listening to our favourite songs, math is behind it all. At once entertaining and informative, Our Days Are Numbered covers an array of mathematic concepts and explores the hidden links between mathematics and everyday life. Brown reveals that a basic understanding of math can make us more creative in the way we approach the world.

Book To You All Hearts Are Open

Download or read book To You All Hearts Are Open written by Scot McKnight and published by Paraclete Press. This book was released on 2021-02-02 with total page 103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most ancient form of prayer is probably petition. Scot McKnight has set out to understand this better, and guide pray-ers and churches to reinvigorate their practice of asking God. To You All Hearts Are Open begins with the Collects of the Book of Common Prayer – timeless prayers that have been used by Christians for centuries, are rooted in the Catholic tradition of prayer, and are deeply biblical. These prayers common to churches of nearly every denomination illustrate five elements of prayer itself: addressing God, asking God, reminding God of how God has acted in the past, expecting God to answer, and accessing God through Christ. They are the Bible’s pattern of petitioning God which Scot McKnight seeks to rediscover a reliable path to relationship and true conversation with God.

Book The Pattern On The Stone

Download or read book The Pattern On The Stone written by W. Daniel Hillis and published by Basic Books. This book was released on 2014-12-09 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most people are baffled by how computers work and assume that they will never understand them. What they don't realize -- and what Daniel Hillis's short book brilliantly demonstrates -- is that computers' seemingly complex operations can be broken down into a few simple parts that perform the same simple procedures over and over again. Computer wizard Hillis offers an easy-to-follow explanation of how data is processed that makes the operations of a computer seem as straightforward as those of a bicycle. Avoiding technobabble or discussions of advanced hardware, the lucid explanations and colorful anecdotes in The Pattern on the Stone go straight to the heart of what computers really do. Hillis proceeds from an outline of basic logic to clear descriptions of programming languages, algorithms, and memory. He then takes readers in simple steps up to the most exciting developments in computing today -- quantum computing, parallel computing, neural networks, and self-organizing systems. Written clearly and succinctly by one of the world's leading computer scientists, The Pattern on the Stone is an indispensable guide to understanding the workings of that most ubiquitous and important of machines: the computer.
