Book excerpt: Thomas Stothard (1755-1834) was probably the most prolific illustrator of his times, executing designs for everything from landscape, sculpture, and history painting to ceramics, silverwork, and book illustration. The resounding popularity of his art attests to the extent to which his decorative style and sentimental subject matter appealed to a wide range of his contemporaries. The general spread of his fame and the rise of his prices must be measured against this background. His sentimental art is a challenge to the accepted notion that political artists produce only" tough" art. An account of Stothard's life, in particular of the special nature of his relation to his employers, reveals the increasingly complex role of the artist in an industrial society.

Book Artists and Patrons in Post war Britain

Download or read book Artists and Patrons in Post war Britain written by Courtauld Institute of Art and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-01 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2001. An examination of art and patronage in Britain during the post-war years. It consists of five case studies, initially written as MA theses, that closely investigate aspects of the mechanisms of patronage outside the state institutions, while indicating structural links within it. The writers have sought to elucidate the relationship between patronage, the production of art and its dissemination. Without seeking to provide an inclusive account of patronage or art production in the early post-war years, their disparate and highly selective papers set up models for the structure of patronage under specific historical conditions. They assume an understanding that works of art are embedded in their social contexts, are products of the conditions under which they were produced, and that these contexts and conditions are complex, fluid and imbricated in one another.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Cecils were the dominant noble family in Elizabethan and Jacobean England. William, Lord Burghley rose to power and great wealth under Elizabeth I, then used his extensive patronage and exceptional breadth of interests to advance the Cecils' remarkable political and cultural pre-eminence. This wide-ranging collection of essays draws on architectural and art history, court studies, English literature, garden history, musicology, economic history, and women's studies. The extensive building programme of William, Lord Burghley and his son Robert, Earl of Salisbury was the most spectacular of the 16th and early 17th centuries, and much of it, particularly Burghley House and Hatfield House, still survives. Their encouragement of new processes of manufacturing was, like their splendid houses, innovative, forward-looking and highly influential. The Cecils were also innovative patrons of the arts. They were pioneers in the vogue for collecting paintings; patrons of musicians such as John Dowland and writers such as Ben Jonson; and introduced new styles of Renaissance design into gardens and interiors. The Cecil women, too, were influential in both political and cultural spheres. The no
