Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Patron Saints It is one of the misfortunes of abridged histories for children, that they give the dry facts, without any of those pleasing digressions that sustain the interest of the adult reader in the perusal of the original work. It is like feeding on condensed meats, which, however nutritious, fail to give the relish of the usual dishes of beef and mutton. Book St Andrew the Patron Saint of Scotland Classic Reprint

Download or read book St Andrew the Patron Saint of Scotland Classic Reprint written by Thomas L. Tullock and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-26 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from St. Andrew, the Patron Saint of Scotland Other countries than Scotland have their tutelar Saints. England honors St. George, who is represented on horseback, clad in full armor with a vanquished dragon at his feet. Ireland patronises St. Patrick; while the guardian saint of Spain is St. James of France, St. Denis; of Italy, St. Anthony; and of Wales, St. David. The patron Saints of Genoa, are St. George, St. Lawrence and St. John the Baptist. On the piazzetta at Venice, their are two granite columns, one bearing the Winged Lion of St. Mark, the emblem of the tutelary Saint of Venice; the other, St. Theodore on a crocodile, the patron of the ancient Republic. St. Michael is regarded 'as the patron or guardian angel of the Jews. But this is a degression. I will not test your patience by reference to other celebrities, but proceed at once to present the historical and legendary account of our own revered patron Saint, who is also the patron of Russia, Hungary and Burgundy. In this effort to throw some new light upon the history of St. Andrew, and to illustrate his character, I shall necessarily blend to a very large extent, the authentic record of Scripture with statements which rest alone on tradition. Book Saints and Festivals of the Christian Church Classic Reprint

Download or read book Saints and Festivals of the Christian Church Classic Reprint written by H. Pomeroy Brewster and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 582 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Saints and Festivals of the Christian Church A considerable part of the matter presented in the following pages was printed a series of articles in the Union and Advertiser of Rochester, N. Y. The absolute truthfulness of these articles from both archeological and historic standpoints as well as their entire freedom from all denominational bias, with the knowledge of profane and ecclesiastical history and canon law shown in them, at once attracted a wide circle of readers and won the hearty approval of the clergy and laity of both the Protestant and Roman branches of the Christian Church. On their completion, at the request of many eminent divines, the author has carefully revised the entire work, adding to the original MSS. much valuable material, and he has thus produced what is practically a Church Year Book in which is told the origin, history and present status of each of the chief festivals of the entire Christian Church as well as of a number of local feasts and festivals which obtain in certain parts of Europe. While it is beyond the scope of the present work to attempt to tell the story of every one of the numerous canonized saints whom the Church has chosen to honour, the author has each day throughout the year selected a few of the most noted among them and made brief sketches of the lives of those who are remembered on that day. But in the Alphabetical Index are given the name and *' saint-day" of a far more comprehensive list; while in the general index will be found the names of those especially mentioned. As the largest number of the feasts, fasts, and festivals of the Church occur on dates dependant upon the date of Easter, these are spoken of at approximate dates to be found in the general index; while others, like Christmas, whose dates are fixed are treated of on their proper days. In conclusion we may say that this book is the only one published-except those huge tomes extending into from twelve to twenty volumes-wherein may be found such complete and tersely told hagiology. Book Lives and Legends of the Evangelists Apostles and Other Early Saints Classic Reprint

Download or read book Lives and Legends of the Evangelists Apostles and Other Early Saints Classic Reprint written by Arthur Bell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-08-02 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lives and Legends of the Evangelists, Apostles, and Other Early Saints Full of interest, too, is the way in which certain legends have been restored to their rightful owners, after having been filched from them and given to other Saints by devotees more eager to glorify the memory of their own favourite patrons than to adhere strictly to the truth. As one instance amongst many may be quoted the quaint story of the resuscitation of a man who had been hanged, in which a cock and hen play a curious part, generally related in connection with St. James the Elder, but really originally told of St. Dominick de la Calzada, who lived many centuries later than the Apostle, and made, or mended, the road used by pilgrims to the shrine of St. James of Compostella, a fact which may perhaps account for the confusion which has sometimes arisen between him and the patron Saint of Spain. Amongst the Saints noticed in the present volume will be found some few whose names are scarcely known in England, yet whose claims to recognition are undoubted on account not only of their sanctity, but because they have all their distinc tive emblems, and are occasionally introduced in Church decora tion and other works of sacred art.
