Download or read book Patriotism for Grownups written by Eda J. LeShan and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2005 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Patriotism is loyalty to a group. We regard the person without it as paltry at best. Historically the size of the group to which most of us have been loyal has increased from the family to the tribe to the city to the state or province and now to the nation. Today our children use the Internet as if there were no such things as national borders. We all know the radioactive clouds, viruses, the clean air from healthy oceans and rainforests and the polluted air from uncaring human acts do not notice the fences and custom offices that mark off spaces as separate countries on our only beautiful planet. We have for the first time in history an opportunity and necessity to continue the great slow movement of patriotism toward inclusion of all human beings. This book is a handbook on how to do this: not to make our loyalty to our native country less but to make our loyalty to the entire human race more. The great Utopian goals have all failed and we have little interest in them today. The way to go forward is in small steps and actions that can be done without major changes in our everyday life. Eleanor Roosevelt wrote: "It is better to light one candle than to curse the darkness." If enough of us light one candle each we will have a blazing light to guide us to a brighter future.

Download or read book Authentic Patriotism written by Stephen P. Kiernan and published by St. Martin's Press. This book was released on 2010-05-11 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Authentic Patriotism presents a provocative, inspiring account of our neglected American ideals and the people who are living them today. Patriotism has become a loaded word: one that is wielded against people with whom we might disagree, or whose cultural origins don't match our own. But our founding fathers--Washington, Jefferson, Adams, and others--saw patriotism as a dynamic force: an act of service, in an evolving nation that defined its purpose by offering all people a better way of life. In Authentic Patriotism, author and award-winning journalist Stephen P. Kiernan explores the original ideals that have been lost in our current climate, where war and economic turmoil have eroded our sense of civic obligation. Kiernan describes "a nation adrift," out of touch with its origins--and then introduces a range of inspiring people who have revived our national purpose by taking action: - The out-of-work college graduate who led an economic and environmental renewal of her blighted home community. - The retired executive who pioneered a revolutionary concept in health care for people without insurance. - The minister who created a legendary choir, with the goal of uniting children of different races, genders, and classes in one voice. - The family who donated their daughter's heart, so that another might live. These and other "New Americans" are profiled in a book that offers hope, ideas, examples, and practical resources for readers who want to renew the American spirit.

Download or read book Patriot written by Alexei Navalny and published by Knopf. This book was released on 2024-10-22 with total page 545 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The powerful and moving memoir of a fearless political opposition leader who paid the ultimate price for his beliefs. Alexei Navalny began writing Patriot shortly after his near-fatal poisoning in 2020. It is the full story of his life: his youth, his call to activism, his marriage and family, his commitment to challenging a world super-power determined to silence him, and his total conviction that change cannot be resisted—and will come. In vivid, page-turning detail, including never-before-seen correspondence from prison, Navalny recounts, among other things, his political career, the many attempts on his life, and the lives of the people closest to him, and the relentless campaign he and his team waged against an increasingly dictatorial regime. Written with the passion, wit, candor, and bravery for which he was justly acclaimed, Patriot is Navalny’s final letter to the world: a moving account of his last years spent in the most brutal prison on earth; a reminder of why the principles of individual freedom matter so deeply; and a rousing call to continue the work for which he sacrificed his life. “This book is a testament not only to Alexei’s life, but to his unwavering commitment to the fight against dictatorship—a fight he gave everything for, including his life. Through its pages, readers will come to know the man I loved deeply—a man of profound integrity and unyielding courage. Sharing his story will not only honor his memory but also inspire others to stand up for what is right and to never lose sight of the values that truly matter." —Yulia Navalnaya
Download or read book Henry Knox written by Anita Silvey and published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. This book was released on 2010-11-15 with total page 47 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A hearty eater, dapper dresser, bookseller to Loyalists and Patriots alike, and married into a staunch Loyalist family, Henry Knox may seem an unlikely hero. But his fascination with warfare and strategy and his support of the Patriot cause prepared him to do what no one else thought was possible: transport heavy artillery from Fort Ticonderoga, up and down snow-covered hills and across frozen lakes, to relieve the siege of Boston. The dramatic story of his achievements is all the more satisfying for being absolutely true, a little-known episode in the history of the American Revolution.
