While the topics of patriotism and patriotic education are highly politicised, this study approaches them from a sociological perspective. It identifies the basic model of patriotic education as a fairly stable structure born of the values and attitudes of different agents: teachers, school administrators, and civil servants. Patriotic education in Russia is shown as a particular example of how a political idea can lead to the formation of social structures, and how, in time, those social structures can lead to the restoration of the original political idea.

Book excerpt: The thesis discusses how patriotic education is openly promoted by the government in contemporary Russia through a series of programmes, entitled the 'State Programme for the Patriotic Education of the Citizens of the Russian Federation', promoted since 2001. However, this thesis presents the argument that patriotic education cannot fully be understood through examination of these formally organised initiatives. Instead, the thesis contributes towards a rethinking of patriotic education as a communicative process whereby multiple ideas of the nation are delivered to young people, both in formal and informal settings. The thesis argues that this promotion of patriotic education is connected to long-standing debates on nations and nationalism in Russia, but also places these within the more general discourse on nations and nationalism, in particular Anderson's (2006) definition of the nation as an 'imagined community'. The thesis is positioned within, and contributes to, more recent arguments surrounding the need to examine everyday ideas of the nation, but maintains a sense of the role played by elites in producing ideas of the nation by intercepting state-produced ideas represented within the education system. Importantly, the three-stage research design maps not only the delivery of these state ideas, but also accesses how these ideas are received and articulated by young people themselves, thus contributing to an understanding of cultural production. This is achieved through triangulation of three qualitative methods: analysis of textbooks, classroom observation, and semi-structured interviews with teachers and students, conducted in St Petersburg. The data generated demonstrates that young people articulate both a sense of local and national belonging, cultivated just as much through their surroundings (historic buildings etc.) as through formal education. The thesis contributes to studies of (Russian) youth by demonstrating that young people negotiate with formal and informal ideas of belonging as they formulate their own understandings and expressions of belonging.

One of the most important tasks of the modern school is the patriotic education of the younger generation. Education of patriotism in the modern school is defined as a purposeful activity designed to generate from the value orientation of children, the quality standards of behavior citizen and patriot of Russia. As a form of political socialization of patriotic education in schools can be implemented in the school through the school participated in the design and research activities. The paper discussed three cases from Russian schools. The results show that the project activity is allowed to combine patriotic education, the development of feelings of love and responsibility for their city and their country, and the development of students' analytical and research skills. It is very important to the formation of patriotism involves not only the scope of the senses, the natural man's love for his homeland, but also to develop the cognitive ability of the child and a teenager, made patriotism a conscious choice, which is closely related to the analysis, monitoring the development of their region and the country as a whole, which allows you to create citizenship, necessary for life in a democratic society.

During the last 20-year period, there has been a consistent effort in Russia to consolidate the nation and to foster a sense of unity and common purpose. To this end, Russian authorities have activated various channels, from educational programmes and youth organizations to media and popular culture. With the conflict in Ukraine, the manipulation of public sentiments – feeling of pride and perception of threat – has become more systemic. The traditional view of Russia being Other for Europe has been replaced with a narrative of enmity. The West is portrayed as a threat to Russia’s historical-cultural originality while Russia represents itself as a country encircled by enemies. On the other hand, these state-led projects mixing patriotism and militarism are perceived sceptically by the Russian society, especially the younger generations. This volume provides new insights into the evolution of enemy images in Russia and the ways in which societal actors perceive official projections of patriotism and militarism in the Russian society. The contributors of the volume include several experts on Russian studies, contemporary history, political science, sociology, and media studies.

Book excerpt: For citizenship education in the 21st century, globalization increasingly presents a new challenge and a new opportunity. Since the time when nationalism played a critical role in unifying new nations, nationality and citizenship have been virtually synonymous terms. As a result, the constructed symbiosis of citizenship and national identity has influenced state supported citizenship education in the most profound way. School curricula, particularly in public schools, produced and reinforced the dominant version of citizenship, which is national citizenship. Schools were expected to prepare future loyal citizens who would identify themselves with the nation. Due to the changing nature and scope of human interactions, the traditional model of citizenship education, however, appears increasingly outdated and deficient to address many contemporary challenges. Thus, schools have become a locus of a potential conflict of two citizenship discourses: the discourse of national citizenship that for a long time has served as the ultimate purpose of public education and the discourse of global citizenship that is forcefully and continuously seeking for a proper place in school curricula despite the lack of curricular heritage. The need for an education for citizenship that has a global scope and is guided by critical and emancipatory approaches becomes more evident. At the same time, the pressure to globalize and internationalize curriculum actively challenges such concepts as patriotism, national identity, loyalty to the state, or national uniqueness of government and democratic development that have been fundamental for citizenship and civic education for decades. In this book, a group of international scholars present their research about the dynamic development, interplay, and interconnectedness of two major discourses in citizenship education, namely national and global. Case studies and ethnographies from China, Cyprus, Egypt, Hong Kong and Singapore, Lebanon, Liberia, the Netherlands, Russia, and the United States display a multifaceted but yet comprehensive picture of educators’ attempts to promote social justice, global awareness, and multiple loyalties.
