Book Patriot Paths of Pennsylvania The Colonial Years

Download or read book Patriot Paths of Pennsylvania The Colonial Years written by S. G. Moyer and published by . This book was released on 2024-05-22 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is not just a history book. The sheer amount of detailed information regarding each battle and skirmish collectively called the Philadelphia Campaign during the Revolutionary War, would fill volumes. This book focuses more on the ironies, intrigue, and idiosyncrasies of a phase in the Revolutionary War that was fought on Pennsylvania soil and helps a novice local historian gain a better perspective of how the battles were fought, won, or lost in their backyard. This book will take you on a guided tour of 18th-century Pennsylvania, where forts were built, battles were fought, and loyalties were challenged. Because this book does not provide a detailed, exhaustive history of the Philadelphia Campaign, there is plenty of room to explore some of the little-known and less frequently visited Revolutionary War sites in Penn's Woods. During this book project, my family and I visited mills, houses, taverns, and forges to learn about the people and places that contributed to the birth of our great nation. Some of the stories told in this book focus on heroes and heroines who worked well behind the battle lines but did their part in securing liberty for all. Conversely, this book features stories of villains and anti-heroes who fought against American patriots or preyed on their families. Finally, this book will peel back the layers of local folklore and provide evidence and insight on whether we can call those stories authentic history. This book also provides a platform for me to tell the unique story of my career as an active-duty infantry Marine, which spanned over twenty years. These stories, called Marine Corps Tie-ins, chronicle my ups and downs, triumphs, and failures during my sojourn as a Soldier of the Sea. Some of these stories are amusing, and some of them are tragic. They contain their own ironies, intrigue and idiosyncrasies that combine to make my journey through the Marine Corps one worth telling. Although I will never sit by a fire with my beautiful daughters and recount my war stories, they are captured in this volume and preserved for them and their children should they ever want to know the intricacies of their daddy's service to our nation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This is the story that I tell my grandchildren at Christmas. I hope that this book will bring the tradition of sharing history to families all across America." -- Lynne Cheney Christmas night, 1776, was a troubled time for our young country. In the six months since the Declaration of Independence had been signed, General George Washington and his troops had suffered defeat after defeat at the hands of the British. It looked as though our struggle for independence might be doomed, when Washington made a bold decision. He would lead the main body of his army across the Delaware River and launch a surprise attack on enemy forces. Washington and his men were going against the odds. It seemed impossible that the ragtag Americans could succeed against the mightiest power in the world. But the men who started across the icy Delaware loved their country and their leader. Under his command they would turn the tide of battle and change the course of history. Best-selling author Lynne Cheney tells the dramatic story of the military campaign that began on Christmas night in 1776. When Washington Crossed the Delaware will teach the young about the heroism, persistence, and patriotism of those who came before them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A haunting portrait of one of the most fascinating and influential figures of the mid-twentieth century, this biography takes a penetrating look at James Forrestal's life and work. Brilliant, ambitious, glamorous, yet a perpetual outsider, Forrestal forged a career that took him from his working-class origins to the social and financial stratosphere of Wall Street, and from there to policy making in Washington. As secretary of the navy during World War II, he was the principal architect in transforming an obsolescent navy into the largest, most formidable naval force in history. After the war, as the nation's first secretary of defense, he played a major role in shaping the anti-Communist consensus that sustained the U.S. policy of containment during the Cold War. Despite his many achievements, Forrestal's life ended in tragedy with his suicide in 1949. This absorbing study not only takes an understanding look at the many-sided man but presents an authoritative history of the great but troubled years of America's rise to world primacy. Winner of the 1992 Roosevelt Naval History Prize, the book enjoyed wide acclaim when first published and is now considered a definitive work.
