Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The True Patrick Henry Virginia this year rounds out her three centuries. Dividing this stretch of time in half, we are at the period when she gave to the world her most spirited and powerful generation of men. Washington was among these; and one of the foremost, also, was Patrick Henry. Why and how it was that, being born under the flag of Great Britain, they elected to live and die under another, everybody knows; but to gain a true understanding of them it is necessary to reach back into the comparatively unilluminated colonial era. Therefore, if the reader will put his finger at the chron ological spot suggested, we shall have a useful start ing-point for this inquiry. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Patrick Henry The reader has a right to know what degree of credit is due to the following narrative; and it is the object of this preface to give him that satisfaction. It was in the summer of 1805, that the design of writing this biography was first conceived. It was produced by an incident of feeling, which, however it affected the author at the time, might now be thought light and trivial by the reader; and he shall not, therefore, be detained by the recital of it. The author knew nothing of Mr. Henry, personally. He had never seen him; and was of course compelled to rely wholly on the information of others. As soon, therefore, as the design was formed of writing his life, aware of the necessity of losing no time in collecting, from the few remaining contemporaries of Mr. Henry, that personal knowledge of the subject which might ere long be expected to die with them, the author despatched letters to every quarter of the state in which it occurred to him as probable that interesting matter might be found; and he was gratified by the prompt attention which was paid to his inquiries. Book Patrick Henry Classic Reprint

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Patrick Henry In this book, I have tried to embody the chief results derived from a study of all the materials known to me, in print and in manuscript, relating to Patrick Henry, - many of these materials being now used for the first time in any formal presentation of his life. Notwithstanding the great popular interest attaching to the name of Patrick Henry, he has hitherto been the subject of but one memoir founded on original investigation, and that, of course, is the Life by William Wirt. When it is considered, however, that Wirt's book was finished as long ago as the year 1817, - before the time had fairly come for the publication of the correspondence, diaries, personal memoranda, and official records of every sort, illustrating the great period covered by Patrick Henry's career, - it will be easy to infer something as to the quantity and the value of those printed materials bearing upon the subject, which are now to be had by us, but which were not within the reach of Wirt. Book Makers of American History

Download or read book Makers of American History written by Alexander Hill Everett and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Makers of American History: Patrick Henry Patrick Henry is in more than in one particular among the most remarkable characters of the Revolutionary period of our country. He is declared by Jefferson to have been "the greatest orator that ever lived," and "the person who, beyond all question, gave the first impulse to the movement which terminated in the Revolution." Whatever exaggeration, if any, may be supposed to have crept into these sweeping statements, it is certain that the merits and services which had power to call them forth from such a quarter must have been of no ordinary kind. Indeed, the accounts that have been transmitted to us of the actual effects of his eloquence upon the minds of his hearers, though resting apparently on the best authority, seem almost fabulous, and certainly surpass any that we have on record of the results produced by the most distinguished orators of ancient or modem Europe. This book was released on 2018-01-29 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Oration Commemorative of the Character of Patrick Henry Mr. Henry's character in every position of life, was a high and honest credit to his country. He was the righthand friend of human free dom and of universal rights, a famous pattern of social purity, and a demi-angel among men. His essential services to his country in her very moment of fearfulest peril his comprehensive patriotism and well known decided unbending and abiding fidelity to the cause of republican ism; his Melancthonian purity of motive in any course he marked out for himself, or cause he espoused, elicited from distinguished sources testimonials of hearts sent and head sanctioned approbation and grateful esteem. Like Them istocles, he resolved to serve his country as a son should serve his sire, nor sought for other rewards, than the reflection that he had per formed some services which contributed to her special benefit and well being. Pro bono pub lico ad infinitum. Was his maxim as a states man; and no man illustrated and expounded the meaning of his precepts more fully than did he by nearly every public and private act. He feared consolidation of power from the forming of a constitution, vesting such wide extended powers and influence in the hands of a few, as he believed the introduction of the Constitution of the United States would, and if he erred in opposing its ratification for this and similar reasons, then surely it was an er ror which is attributable to an excess, rather than to a want of cautious, zealous patriotism and anxiety for the permanency of the republic. John Henry, was a native of Aberdeen in Scotland, and emigrated to Vir ginia in quest of fortune about the year 1730. He was a nephew of the Scotch historian, Dr. Wil. Liam Robertson, and, in a few years after his ar rival in Virginia, married the widow of his friend Col. Syme, of Hanover county, where she had been born and educated. Her brother, William Win ston, is said to have possessed something of that extraordinary eloquence with which her son was so eminently endowed. Mrs. Henry was exceedingly indulgent to her children and a little inclined to negligence in the order and arrangement of her household; but she was possessed of a most benevolent disposition, a strong understanding, great probity of character, and was distinguished in the social circles of that day for the grace and intelligence of her conver sation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Patrick Henry Life, Correspondence and Speeches, Vol. 3 Sir: I arrived here last night & found the Troops in tolerable good condition. The Inhabitants are pretty quiet. But from the small Distance that separates them from the Enemy, the officers think it necessary for the Troops to perform Duty that is very severe. Understanding that a large Ship & Sloop were in the Bay ab 15 Miles below, I thought it advisable to order out a party of Soldiers to make Discovery, & bring them in if possible. Cap Barron accordingly set out with 20 men in a swift sailing Vessel & has bro in a Sloop from Turks Island having on board 900 Bushels Salt, a peice or two of Popn & Irish Linens, & a few other articles. The Sloop is just now bro within the Bar, & her Cargo waits the Disposition of the Convention. The Ship is very suspicious. I can't form a probable guess whether she is a friend or a Foe. I shall order out another party very early in the morning to attempt something with her. Cap James Barron, who is so kind as to be the Bearer of this, will hand you a large Bag of Letters which seem to have been concealed by Cap Harris, & kept back when the former papers bro by him were discovered. A small parcel of Goods are found on him which I judge belong to Sprowle of Norfolk, agreeable to an Invoice among Harris's first Letters, & very probably some of these may ascertain the Matter. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Portraits of Patrick Henry I knew Mr. William Wirt Henry personally. He was one of the orators at the centennial celebration held in Independence Hall on July 2, 1876, in commemoration of the introduction into Congress of the Resolutions respecting Independancy, when a congress of authors convened, each one bringing a biographical sketch of a revolutionary worthy, and as the sequel will show the history he gave shortly priorto this occasion of the Sully portrait of Patrick Henry was the correct one and the story he subsequently remembered having been told by his father an apocryphal one. This is made clear and emphatic by the production of the original miniature that belonged to the syme-fleming family and compar ing it with the Sully painting and the latter again with an engraving of Dance's portrait of Captain Cook.
