Book The Prostitution of Sexuality

Download or read book The Prostitution of Sexuality written by Kathleen Barry and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Barry (sociology, Pennsylvania State U.) considers sexual exploitation a political condition and thus the foundation of women's subordination and the base from which discrimination against women is constructed. She argues for the need to integrate the struggle against sexual exploitation in prostitution into broader feminist struggles and to place it, as one of several connected issues, in the forefront of the feminist agenda. Book Working at the Bar

Download or read book Working at the Bar written by Thomas M. Steinfatt and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2002-01-30 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Commercial sex is the occupation of a significant portion of the women of the world, providing economic support for millions of people and their families. Working at the Bar is the first-ever, long-term, longitudinal, in-depth study of a large sex work industry—and Thailand, the most prominent nation in the rapidly growing sex tourism industry, makes for an excellent case study. While previous works have provided brief glimpses of one group of workers studied from a particular point of view, author Thomas Steinfatt examines considerations of health, behavior, economics, morality, religion, and worker safety. The result of data gathered from thousands of workers and customers in Thailand over a period of twelve years, Working at the Bar covers all aspects of an industry that, although it does not conform to various Western ideals, is nevertheless enormously significant. Among the most provocative of Steinfatt's arguments is that sex work is not itself immoral, and that far from being the exploitation industry we might imagine, sex work in Thailand is beneficial to everyone involved—especially given that education in this nation has proven not to be a viable alternative. Providing an opportunity for economic progress unavailable through other means, and providing working conditions far safer than those of the average Thai factory, sex work is ripe for a study that explores all aspects and perceptions associated with it. Working at the Bar is that long overdue study.

Book excerpt: Bangkok is one of Asia's most interesting, varied, controversial and challenging cities. It is a city of contradictions, both in its present and past. This unique book examines the development of the city from its earliest days as the seat of the Thai monarchy to its current position as an infamous contemporary metropolis. Adopting insights from anthropology, urban studies and human geography, this is a powerful account of the city and its dynamic spaces. Marc Askew examines the city's variety from the inner-city slums to the rural-urban fringe, and gives us a keen insight into the daily life of the city's inhabitants, be they middle-class suburbanites or sex workers.

Book The East the West and Sex

Download or read book The East the West and Sex written by Richard Bernstein and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2010-07-27 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this wide-ranging history, Richard Bernstein explores the connection between sex and power as it has played out between Eastern cultures and the Western explorers, merchants, and conquerors who have visited them. This illuminating book describes the historical and ongoing encounter between these travelers and the morally ambiguous opportunities they found in foreign lands. Bernstein’s narrative teems with real figures, from Marco Polo and his investigation into the harem of Kublai Khan; the nineteenth-century American missionary Isabella Thoburn and her efforts to stamp out the “sinfulness” of the Mughal culture of India; Gustave Flaubert and his dalliances with Egyptian prostitutes; to modern-day sex tourists in Southeast Asia, as well as the women that they both exploit and enrich. Provocative and insightful, The East, The West, and Sex is a lucid look at a pervasive and yet mostly ignored subject.

Book Risk Taker Spy Maker

Download or read book Risk Taker Spy Maker written by Barry Michael Broman and published by Casemate. This book was released on 2020-07-20 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Broman’s true tales of putting his life on the line recruiting and running spies in a dozen countries are the stuff of action movies.” —Peter Arnett, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Live from the Battlefield Joining the CIA after fighting in Vietnam as a Marine, Barry Broman’s first posting was war-torn Cambodia. He was present at the fall of Phnom Penh in 1975, escaping just before the Khmer Rouge took power. During his career, he was twice chief of station, once a deputy chief of station, and he supervised an international paramilitary project in support of the Cambodian resistance to Vietnamese invaders. He was actively involved in several assignments in counter-narcotics operations in Southeast Asia including a major bust that yielded 551 kilograms of high-grade heroin from a major drug trafficker. His favorite agent against a variety of hard targets was a fellow whose only demand was that his assignments be “life threatening.” (He survived them all.) As amazing as the characters Broman has met are the places he’s been, with visits to little-known and rarely seen places like the Naga Hills on the India–Burma border, the world-famous but off-limits jade and ruby mines of Burma, and the isolated Banda Islands of Indonesia, the home of nutmeg. Broman’s engaging tone is complemented by photographs taken throughout his career, many of them his own, made using the skills he learned as a teenager working for the Associated Press in Southeast Asia—including Marines in action in Vietnam, the ravages of war in Cambodia, and opium buyers forcing growers to sell in Burma. “[A] remarkable life story.” —Booklist

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Extraordinary Banana Tree is not a war story. It is a love story in the time of war. It is the story of the developing love between Cheryl Flynn, Assistant Chief of Intelligence for the Defense Attaches Office in Saigon, and Billy Dobson, Manager of Flight Operations for Air America in Vietnam and Cambodia. The story opens on April 4, 1975, with Cheryl boarding the giant C5A sent by Gerry Ford to rescue orphans from South Vietnam. The plane crashed 13 miles south of Saigon. Does Cheryl survive? Does anyone survive? The story goes back in time and follows Cheryl and Billy on their paths to April 4 and to the eventual fall of Saigon on April 30, 1975. Does Billy have to face the last month alone or will Cheryl be at his side? The story follows Billy from the seminary, to the Army, where he serves as Counterintelligence Officer for the 11th Armored Cav, sent into Cambodia by President Nixon, and eventually to Air America and his meeting with Cheryl Flynn at Nha Trang, paradise on the South China Sea. The story exemplifies the horrors the war, the resilience of the human spirit, the bravery and unbelievable accomplishments of Air America personnel, and the power of love to make it all worthwhile. You will laugh, you will cry, you will love Cheryl and Billy. A very appropriate book for the 40th anniversary of the Fall of Saigon.
