Download or read book Physician Self Referrals written by Louise Hamilton and published by Nova Science Publishers. This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Self-referral occurs when a provider refers patients to entities in which the provider or the provider's family members have a financial interest. Rising Medicare expenditures for PT services have long been of concern, and questions have been raised about the role of self-referral in this growth. This book examines trends in the number of and expenditures for self-referred and non-self-referred Medicare PT services and how provision of these services differs among providers on the basis of whether they self-refer. It also discusses similar trends in cancer treatments, anatomic pathology services, and advanced imaging services.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One particular area of concern has been physician referrals for services that finan- cially benefit the physician because the physician has an ownership interest in the practice or facility that provides the referred service. [...] At the same time, the ability to provide self-referred services continues to rise with expanded in-office ancil- lary capacity and steady increases in the number of ASCs. [...] Focusing on the in-office ancillary exception, the Com- mission examined three types of options to address the growth of an- cillary services: limiting the services or physician groups exempted from the Stark law, reducing payments or improving payment accu- racy for ancillary services, and adopting a limited prior authorization requirement.6 More broadly, MedPAC and others have endorsed more enco. [...] Rita Redberg, cardiologist and professor of medicine at the University of Califor- nia, San Francisco, will discuss some of the latest innovations in the practice of cardiology, their incorporation into office practice, and the utilization of services. [...] KEY QUESTIONS • How have the exceptions under the Stark law contributed to in- novation in health care technology? Health care delivery? What are the advantages to having a growing share of ancillary services and surgeries performed out of the hospital setting? What are the disad- vantages? • How has the mix of patients at ASCs and hospital outpatient de- partments changed with the growth in ASCs?.

Book Conflict of Interest in Medical Research Education and Practice

Download or read book Conflict of Interest in Medical Research Education and Practice written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2009-09-16 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Collaborations of physicians and researchers with industry can provide valuable benefits to society, particularly in the translation of basic scientific discoveries to new therapies and products. Recent reports and news stories have, however, documented disturbing examples of relationships and practices that put at risk the integrity of medical research, the objectivity of professional education, the quality of patient care, the soundness of clinical practice guidelines, and the public's trust in medicine. Conflict of Interest in Medical Research, Education, and Practice provides a comprehensive look at conflict of interest in medicine. It offers principles to inform the design of policies to identify, limit, and manage conflicts of interest without damaging constructive collaboration with industry. It calls for both short-term actions and long-term commitments by institutions and individuals, including leaders of academic medical centers, professional societies, patient advocacy groups, government agencies, and drug, device, and pharmaceutical companies. Failure of the medical community to take convincing action on conflicts of interest invites additional legislative or regulatory measures that may be overly broad or unduly burdensome. Conflict of Interest in Medical Research, Education, and Practice makes several recommendations for strengthening conflict of interest policies and curbing relationships that create risks with little benefit. The book will serve as an invaluable resource for individuals and organizations committed to high ethical standards in all realms of medicine.

Book Transforming Health Care Scheduling and Access

Download or read book Transforming Health Care Scheduling and Access written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2015-08-24 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to Transforming Health Care Scheduling and Access, long waits for treatment are a function of the disjointed manner in which most health systems have evolved to accommodate the needs and the desires of doctors and administrators, rather than those of patients. The result is a health care system that deploys its most valuable resource-highly trained personnel-inefficiently, leading to an unnecessary imbalance between the demand for appointments and the supply of open appointments. This study makes the case that by using the techniques of systems engineering, new approaches to management, and increased patient and family involvement, the current health care system can move forward to one with greater focus on the preferences of patients to provide convenient, efficient, and excellent health care without the need for costly investment. Transforming Health Care Scheduling and Access identifies best practices for making significant improvements in access and system-level change. This report makes recommendations for principles and practices to improve access by promoting efficient scheduling. This study will be a valuable resource for practitioners to progress toward a more patient-focused "How can we help you today?" culture.
