Parents help children build and refine their knowledge and skills, charting a trajectory for their health and well-being during childhood and beyond. The experience of parenting also impacts parents themselves. Parenting Matters identifies parenting knowledge, attitudes, and practices associated with positive developmental outcomes in children ages 0-8; universal/preventive and targeted strategies used in a variety of settings that have been effective with parents of young children and that support the identified knowledge, attitudes, and practices; and barriers to and facilitators for parents' use of practices that lead to healthy child outcomes as well as their participation in effective programs and services. This report makes recommendations directed at an array of stakeholders, for promoting the wide-scale adoption of effective programs and services for parents and on areas that warrant further research to inform policy and practice. It is meant to serve as a roadmap for the future of parenting policy, research, and practice in the United States.

Book excerpt: Early social-emotional competence (SEC) is crucial to long-term adjustment and requires the complex integration of many competencies across social situations. Both parenting behaviors and child language are thought to influence SEC, yet few studies examined their combined influences across early childhood. The dissertation addressed these gaps by testing (1) a measurement model of SEC that included multiple skills using observed and mother-rated child competencies, and (2) longitudinal pathways from maternal supportive and unsupportive practices and child language at 18 months and 36 months to child SEC at age 5 years, in a sample of 120 economically strained rural and semi-rural families. The measurement model indicated that only mother-rated child competencies contributed significantly to a latent SEC factor. The first structural path model revealed that maternal cognitive stimulation at 18 months and child language at 36 months directly predicted better child SEC at 5 years. The second structural path model revealed that maternal negative affect at 18 months at intrusiveness at 36 months directly predicted worse child SEC at 5 years; maternal detachment at 18 months indirectly predicted worse child SEC at 5 years through worse child language at 36 months, marginally. Although they had no impact on SEC, each model revealed that child language at 18 months also predicted specific parenting behaviors at 36 months. Implications for understanding developmental pathways to socially and emotionally competent behaviors are discussed.
