Book A Patch Oriented Approach to Hierarchical Concept Structures

Download or read book A Patch Oriented Approach to Hierarchical Concept Structures written by Marko Junkkari and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: "There are many principles to present a hierarchy of knowledge units i.e. concepts. A concept hierarchy exists on a set of concepts and it is based on a partial order relation. The set of concepts and the relation among these form a concept system. The purpose of this paper is to present a method and functions for inspecting the structure of a concept system and to provide a classification of typical structures. Understanding the structure of a concept system is vital when one considers the utilisation of a concept system. The most common concept structures include trees, different lattices and semilattices. In order to utilise the operations for any type of a structure, it is important to recognise the structure. Our contribution here is to present a set of functions to recognise typical structures and to form a principle for classification of hierarchical concept structures. Here, the concept structures are represented on the basis of set theory, which is a well-known and established formalism. We introduce a path-oriented method that enables accurate and clear consideration of different structures."

Book Semantic Structures

Download or read book Semantic Structures written by Ray S. Jackendoff and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 1992-04-22 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Semantic Structures is a large-scale study of conceptual structure and its lexical and syntactic expression in English that builds on the system of Conceptual Semantics described in Ray Jackendoff's earlier books Semantics and Cognition and Consciousness and the Computational Mind. Jackendoff summarizes the relevant arguments in his two previous books, setting out the basic parameters for the formalization of meaning, and comparing his mentalistic approach with Fodor's Language of Thought hypothesis. He then takes up the Problem of Meaning, extending the range of semantic fields encompassed by the Conceptual Semantics formalism, and the Problem of Correspondence, formalizing the relation between semantic and syntactic structure. Both of these problems must be fully addressed in order to develop a general theory of language that is concerned with syntax and semantics and their points of connection. Few books on lexical semantics present such a comprehensive analysis of such a wide range of phenomena from a unified perspective. Besides discussing the conceptual structures of hundreds of words and constructions, Jackendoff extends and deepens the theory to come to grips with such crucial issues as roles and marking; arguments, modifiers, and adjuncts; binding and control; and the thematic linking hierarchy.

Book Anaphora and Conceptual Structure

Download or read book Anaphora and Conceptual Structure written by Karen van Hoek and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1997-09-02 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Karen van Hoek presents a cogent analysis of the classic problem of constraints on pronominal anaphora within the framework of Cognitive Grammar. Van Hoek proceeds from the position that grammatical structure can be characterized in terms of semantic and phonological representations, without autonomous syntactic structures or principles such as tree structures or c-command. She argues that constraints on anaphora can be explained in terms of semantic interactions between nominals and the contexts in which they are embedded. Integrating the results of previous work, Van Hoek develops a model in which some nominals function as "conceptual reference points" that dominate over stretches defined by the semantic relations among elements. When a full noun is in the domain of a reference point, coreference is ruled out, since the speaker would be sending contradictory messages about the salience of the noun's referent. With profound implications for the nature of syntax, this book will interest theoretical linguists of all persuasions.

Book Conceptual Structures for Discovering Knowledge

Download or read book Conceptual Structures for Discovering Knowledge written by Simon Andrews and published by Springer. This book was released on 2011-07-18 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book constitutes the proceedings of the 19th International Conference on Conceptual Structures, ICCS 2011, held in Derby, UK, in July 2011. The 18 full papers and 4 short papers presented together with 12 workshop papers were carefully reviewed and selected for inclusion in the book. The volume also contains 3 invited talks. ICCS focuses on the useful representation and analysis of conceptual knowledge with research and business applications. It advances the theory and practice in connecting the user's conceptual approach to problem solving with the formal structures that computer applications need to bring their productivity to bear. Conceptual structures (CS) represent a family of approaches that builds on the successes of artificial intelligence, business intelligence, computational linguistics, conceptual modelling, information and Web technologies, user modelling, and knowledge management. Two of the workshops contained in this volume cover CS and knowledge discovery in under-traversed domains and in task specific information retrieval. The third addresses CD in learning, teaching and assessment.

Book Knowledge and Language

Download or read book Knowledge and Language written by E. Reuland and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 1. BACKGROUND This volume is one of three which emerged from the Conference on Knowledge and Language, held from May 21-May 25, 1989, at the occasion of the 37 5th anniversary of the University of Groningen. Studying the relation between knowledge and language, one may distinguish two different lines of inquiry, one focussing on language as a body of knowledge, the other on language as a vehicle of knowledge. Approaching language as a body of knowledge one faces questions concerning its structure, and the relation with other types of knowledge. One will ask, then, how language is acquired and to what extent the acquisition of language and the structure of the language faculty model relevant aspects of other cognitive capacities. If language is approached as a vehicle for knowledge, the question comes up what enables linguistic entities to represent facts about the world. To what extent does this reply on conventional aspects of mean ings? Is it possible for language, when used non-conventionally as in metaphors, to convey intersubjective knowledge? If so (and it does seem to be the case), one may wonder what makes this possible. The aim of this conference was to investigate the role of conceptual structure in cognitive processes, exploring it from the perspectives of philosophy of language, linguistics, political philosophy, psychology, liter ary theory, aesthetics, and philosophy of science. The themes of these three volumes reflect the themes of the conference.
