Book excerpt: This updated second edition of Acute Ischemic Stroke: Imaging and Intervention provides a comprehensive account of the state of the art in the diagnosis and treatment of acute ischemic stroke. The basic format of the first edition has been retained, with sections on fundamentals such as pathophysiology and causes, imaging techniques and interventions. However, each chapter has been revised to reflect the important recent progress in advanced neuroimaging and the use of interventional tools. In addition, a new chapter is included on the classification instruments for ischemic stroke and their use in predicting outcomes and therapeutic triage. All of the authors are internationally recognized experts and members of the interdisciplinary stroke team at the Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School. The text is supported by numerous informative illustrations, and ease of reference is ensured through the inclusion of suitable tables. This book will serve as a unique source of up-to-date information for neurologists, emergency physicians, radiologists and other health care providers who care for the patient with acute ischemic stroke.

Download or read book The Cerebral Veins written by L.M. Auer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-12-11 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research in the morphology-angioarchitecture and ultrastructure-of cerebral veins has been widely neglected in past decades; investigation was mainly focussed on the arterial side of brain circulation. This circumstance has certainly had a negative impact on the development of knowledge in clinical medicine about cerebral venous disease. Cerebra} venous pathology and its consequence is, however, a frequent problern in clinical neurosur gery, both with regard to operative techniques and conservative manage ment. Therefore, it is not surprising that the initiative to collect, for the first time, data on our present knowledge in basic research of cerebral veins, their structure and function under normal and pathological circumstances, came from clinicians. Regarding the cerebral veins the clinician has primarily in view the dysfunctions originating from embryogenetic malformations, phlebitic obstruction, tumourous shunts, or traumatic lesions. But in addition to that, particular attention should be paid to the microstructure ofthe venous vessel walls, their barrier function, and the venous vasomotor system. Studying these interrelationships has for a long time been both fascinating and of immediate interest to me.

Book The Cerebral Vessel Wall

Download or read book The Cerebral Vessel Wall written by Jorge Cervós-Navarro and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume surveys current research on the morphology, physiology, and pathology of the cerebral vessel wall. The first section deals with the normal and pathological morphology of the cerebral vessel wall at the level of the electron microscope. Topics covered include the ultrastructural changes in atherosclerosis, in aneurysmatic vessels, and in tumorous brain vessels. The second section deals with the relationship between the reaction of the cerebral vessel wall and blood flow. The effects of the perivascular extracellular fluid, the sympathetic nervous system, and various drugs on vascular resistance are here described. The third section is concerned with the innvervation of cerebral vessels. In this section the morphology of vessel innervation in different region is described, as well as such related topics as arterial spasm. The fourth section deals with the blood-brain barrier. The permeability of the cerebral vessel wall in normal and pathological conditions, methods of modifying permeability, and the effect of hypertension on the blood-brain barrier are covered. This volume summarizes the clinical relevance of research work of recent years. It will be of interest to all neurologists, neuropathologists, and physiologists concerned with cerebral circulation.
