Book Pathology of Chronic Constipation in Pediatric and Adult Coloproctology

Download or read book Pathology of Chronic Constipation in Pediatric and Adult Coloproctology written by William A. Meier-Ruge and published by Karger Medical and Scientific Publishers. This book was released on 2005-01-01 with total page 103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is devoted to motility disorders of the gut and their diagnosis, a field which can be frustrating when classical histological staining techniques are used. The use of enzyme histochemical techniques, however, provides important information on functional abnormalities of colon motility, which is demonstrated here in more than two hundred photomicrographs. The individual chapters are divided into three sections: the first outlines and illustrates pathological aspects of a particular disorder, the second provides diagnostic criteria, and the third discusses clinical pathology. In a final chapter the methodology of enzyme histochemistry is described. Drawing from 40 years of experience in the diagnosis of biopsies from the mucosa of the rectosigmoid and laparoscopic biopsies of muscularis propria from different gut areas, the authors have compiled a clearly organized and didactic volume, which will be highly useful to practicing pathologists, technicians and trainees in pathology. It will also be of great benefit to gastroenterologists, pediatricians, and coloproctological and pediatric surgeons in helping them interpret histopathological findings in the gastrointestinal tract.

Book excerpt: Three distinct types of contractions perform colonic motility functions. Rhythmic phasic contractions (RPCs) cause slow net distal propulsion with extensive mixing/turning over. Infrequently occurring giant migrating contractions (GMCs) produce mass movements. Tonic contractions aid RPCs in their motor function. The spatiotemporal patterns of these contractions differ markedly. The amplitude and distance of propagation of a GMC are several-fold larger than those of an RPC. The enteric neurons and smooth muscle cells are the core regulators of all three types of contractions. The regulation of contractions by these mechanisms is modifiable by extrinsic factors: CNS, autonomic neurons, hormones, inflammatory mediators, and stress mediators. Only the GMCs produce descending inhibition, which accommodates the large bolus being propelled without increasing muscle tone. The strong compression of the colon wall generates afferent signals that are below nociceptive threshold in healthy subjects. However, these signals become nociceptive; if the amplitudes of GMCs increase, afferent nerves become hypersensitive, or descending inhibition is impaired. The GMCs also provide the force for rapid propulsion of feces and descending inhibition to relax the internal anal sphincter during defecation. The dysregulation of GMCs is a major factor in colonic motility disorders: irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), and diverticular disease (DD). Frequent mass movements by GMCs cause diarrhea in diarrhea predominant IBS, IBD, and DD, while a decrease in the frequency of GMCs causes constipation. The GMCs generate the afferent signals for intermittent short-lived episodes of abdominal cramping in these disorders. Epigenetic dysregulation due to adverse events in early life is one of the major factors in generating the symptoms of IBS in adulthood.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first comprehensive book exclusively dedicated to anorectal physiology and the importance of diagnostic tools in guiding the evaluation and treatment of anorectal dysfunction. Functional disorders, and specifically fecal incontinence and evacuatory disorders, are prevalent in the general population, affecting up to 20% of individuals. As many of these conditions have extremely complex mechanisms, a thorough understanding of anorectal physiology is a crucial element in the surgeon’s “arsenal" to ensure accurate evaluation and to inform treatment. At this time, there is no other title that specifically addresses all aspects of anorectal physiology, as well as anorectal and pelvic floor disorders, including fecal incontinence and defecation disorders. Specifically, the book provides detailed descriptions of diagnostic methods and treatment algorithms for a range of anorectal conditions, including modern treatment modalities such as sacral neuromodulation. A unique and comprehensive reference covering all aspects of the evaluation and treatment of anorectal disorders, Anorectal Physiology – A Clinical and Surgical Perspective will be of significant interest to proctologists and coloproctologists, gastroenterologists, colorectal surgeons, gynecologists and all other professionals interested in anorectal physiology.

Book Histopathology of Chronic Constipation

Download or read book Histopathology of Chronic Constipation written by W.A. Meier-Ruge and published by Karger Medical and Scientific Publishers. This book was released on 2012-09-17 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The symptom of chronic constipation is often caused by a series of intestinal diseases, which can be reliably diagnosed histopathologically by histochemical techniques and consequently treated by surgical intervention. The following publication is the second and completely revised edition of 'Pathology of Chronic Constipation in Pediatric and Adult Coloproctology' published in 2005, and introduces several new diseases and figures. It includes characteristics of classical and ultrashort Hirschsprung’s disease as well as total intestinal aganglionosis and hypoganglionosis. New diseases such as intestinal neuronal dysplasia, desmosis coli, leiomyopathy, architectural malformation, and stretching lesions of muscularis propria are critically discussed. Atrophic desmosis is also covered. This new and frequently observed degeneration of muscularis propria in Crohn’s disease, sigmoid diverticulitis, and other inflammatory intestinal diseases causes focal aperistalsis, frequently interpreted as scar stenosis. 'Histopathology of Chronic Constipation' provides a comprehensive overview of intestinal alterations which cause chronic constipation. It is therefore of special interest to diagnostic pathologists, clinicians, pediatric and abdominal surgeons, coloproctologists, and gastroenterologists.

Book Enzyme Histochemistry

    Book Details:
  • Author : Z. Lojda
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2012-12-06
  • ISBN : 3642672345
  • Pages : 350 pages

Download or read book Enzyme Histochemistry written by Z. Lojda and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During recent years enzyme histochemical reactions have increasingly been considered as important, the reason being that enzyme histo chemistry is now a well-established link between morphology and bio chemistry. The development of numerous new methods and in particular the improvement of existing techniques contributed to the expansion of enzyme histochemical reactions. Today, the use of these methods allows detailed insight into molecular processes of single cells and their constituents. The selection of a suitable method for enzyme histochemical investigations needs thorough knowledge and critical evaluation of the reactions de scribed for the histochemical demonstration of enzymes and introduced in laboratory practice. Often, it is difficult for scientists primarily concerned with the application of methods and for laboratory assistants to comment on the value of an enzyme histochemical reaction. Our book will serve as a guide in this respect. It contains the most important histochemical methods for the localization of enzymes, all of which were checked by the authors themselves. These methods were often modified and frequently used for numerous different investigations of healthy and diseased organs in basic research and in routine practice.
