Book excerpt: The Mycoplasmas, Volume II: Human and Animal Mycoplasmas is a volume of a comprehensive three-volume series encompassing various facets of mycoplasmology. This volume deals with host-parasite relationships of mycoplasmas in man and animals, with emphasis on recent developments in the study of classical mycoplasmal diseases of animals, such as cattle, sheep, goats, swine, and chickens. This volume shows the knowledge about mycoplasmal diseases of man, including those involving the respiratory and genitourinary tracts. Detailed information on the humoral and cellular immune responses to mycoplasmas, which are assuming an ever-increasing significance in the understandingof the pathogenesis of human and animal mycoplasmal diseases, is also given. This book ends with reviews on mycoplasmas as arthritogenic agents and the interaction of mycoplasmas with cell andorgan cultures. This book will serve as a standard reference work for mycoplasmologists, as well as for other interested microbiologists, cellular and molecular biologists, membrane biochemists, clinicians, veterinarians, plant pathologists, and entomologists.

Book excerpt: Created by leading international experts, Mycoplasmas: Molecular Biology, Pathogenicity, and Strategies for Control represents a cutting-edge summary of current knowledge in the field. Mycoplasmas, or mollicutes, form a large group of bacteria that can infect humans, animals, and plants. This comprehensive text focuses on the molecular and cell biology of mycoplasmas and related mollicutes. It also explores pathogenesis and emerging strategies for control. Coverage includes a variety of topics including genome analysis, gene vectors, genomics, motility, chemotaxis, attachment, molecular epidemiology, immunology, diagnosis, antimicrobial resistance, and vaccine technology.

Book Mycoplasma Infection of Cell Cultures

Download or read book Mycoplasma Infection of Cell Cultures written by G. McGarrity and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If one were to design the ideal nuisance for cell cultures, the resultant might well be similar to mycoplasmas. These micro organisms are very prevalent in nature, being found in the oral cavity, blood, the mucous membranes of the respiratory and uro genital tract and other tissues of both man and animals. They are relatively difficult to detect microbiologically and chemically. Lacking cell walls, they do not routinely produce turbidity in cell cultures and are resistant to antibiotics that act on cell walls. Mycoplasmas grow to high titers in cell cultures. Concen 7 8 trations of 10-10 colony forming units per ml of supernatant medium are representative. Additionally, more numbers are attached to cell membranes. Further, mycoplasmas have been shown to mimic in vitro effects of viruses and toxic chemicals. In various cell culture systems, mycoplasmas have been known to cause cell death, decrease or increase cell growth, affect virus tite~s, induce interferon, cause chromosome damage, induce transformation, cyto pathic effects, alter phenotypic expression, and significantly alter metabolic pathways and products of cells. The presence of such high concentrations of mycoplasmas in cell cultures constitutes a true in vitro infection. Such infected cell cultures, with a 8 9 total of 10 _10 or more actively metabolizing mycoplasmas, have no place in controlled, standardized cell culture procedures. Numerous reports have been published on mycoplasma assay pro cedures, effects of infection, and preventive and elimination measures.

Book Mycoplasma Pathogenicity

Download or read book Mycoplasma Pathogenicity written by S. Razin and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 529 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mycoplasmas, Volume IV: Mycoplasma Pathogenicity is a collection of essays that discusses the factors involved in recovery of mollicutes. The book presents the importance of mixed infections involving mycoplasmas and other microorganisms. It also demonstrates the importance of mycoplasmal arthritis in veterinary medicine. The text describes the dynamics and physicochemical aspects of adherence. It discusses the interaction of mycoplasmas with lymphoid cells and macrophages. Another topic of interest is the induction of cytotoxic lymphocytes by mycoplasma. The section that follows describes the chemoprophylaxis for mycoplasma diseases in man. The book will provide valuable insights for microbiologists, pathologists, students, and researchers in the field of bacteriology.

Book Mycoplasma Diseases of Trees and Shrubs

This book also includes additional chapters by the invited contributors in the meeting. Organized into 15 chapters, this book begins with the isolation, characterization and identification of spiroplasmas and mycoplasma-like organisms. It then describes the various diseases of trees and shrubs, specifically yellows disease, stubborn disease, Paulownia witches' broom disease, mulberry dwarf, blueberry stunt, and sandal spike disease. It also elaborates the control of tree diseases by chemotherapy. This treatise will provide a standard reference work for all interested in plant mycoplasma diseases in forest pathology, entomology, and disease control.
