Book Fighter Fighter Corkscrew Port

Download or read book Fighter Fighter Corkscrew Port written by Pat Cunningham and published by Casemate Publishers. This book was released on 2012-04-19 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The young men who flew with RAF Bomber Command in World War Two were a complex mixture of individuals but they all shared the gift of teamwork. A crew of seven may have comprised all non-commissioned men and some crews included commissioned officers but not always flying as pilots. The outstanding fact was that each man relied on every other member of his crew to return from each mission safely. This book contains ten intriguing reminiscences of bomber aircrew; some were pilots, others navigators, flight engineers, bomb-aimers or gunners. They flew as both commissioned or NCO airmen. Understandably, a common problem was that of coping with fear. Many former aircrew hold that anyone who claims to have felt no fear on operations is either lying or has allowed the years to blank out that fear. But there are a few who do maintain that they never felt afraid. For the majority, though, handling fear was something to be worked out by the individual. Some hit the bottle, others womanized to excess; others tightened the gut and bit the lip; or drew the curtain and focused upon the plotting table or the wireless set. The passing years may have silvered what hair remains, dulled the eye that formerly registered on the merest speck; lent a quiver to the hand that once controlled the stick, penciled in the track, manipulated the tuning dial, set the bombsight, tapped the gauge, or rotated the turret. And yet for all the attributes of age their irrepressible youthfulness shines through.

Book excerpt: 'A must for all who have loved and lost their best friend and loyal companion' The Viking Way is a challenging long distance footpath in the UK, and runs 147 miles from The Humber Bridge to Oakham in the County of Rutland. My pilgrimage along this amazing footpath in June 2019, spanned 12 consecutive days. The purpose of the walk was to assist in my 'coming to terms' with the loss of my Chocolate Labrador 'Denver' in June 2018. During the nine months following Denver's passing, I nearly left this life 3 times...by choice, the devastation his loss created took me down into the deepest, darkest depths of despair. The level of grief I experienced in losing Denver was absolute, and beyond anything I'd ever known. Carrying Denver's collar in my backpack, here is the record of the outer physical challenges I encountered on the trail, and to an equal degree the deeper inner battle of the journey through my complicated, unresolved grief. An emotional roller coaster that takes the reader into the depths of complicated grief, and yet the love, joy and happiness our dogs bring into our lives shines through.

Book The Lost Dinosaurs of Egypt

Download or read book The Lost Dinosaurs of Egypt written by William Nothdurft and published by Random House. This book was released on 2002-09-24 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The date is January 11, 1911. A young German paleontologist, accompanied only by a guide, a cook, four camels, and a couple of camel drivers, reaches the lip of the vast Bahariya Depression after a long trek across the bleak plateau of the western desert of Egypt. The scientist, Ernst Freiherr Stromer von Reichenbach, hopes to find fossil evidence of early mammals. In this, he will be disappointed, for the rocks here will prove to be much older than he thinks. They are nearly a hundred million years old. Stromer is about to learn that he has walked into the age of the dinosaurs. At the bottom of the Bahariya Depression, Stromer will find the remains of four immense and entirely new dinosaurs, along with dozens of other unique specimens. But there will be reversals—shipments delayed for years by war, fossils shattered in transit, stunning personal and professional setbacks. Then, in a single cataclysmic night, all of his work will be destroyed and Ernst Stromer will slip into history and be forgotten. The date is January 11, 2000—eighty-nine years to the day after Stromer descended into Bahariya. Another young paleontologist, Ameri-can graduate student Josh Smith, has brought a team of fellow scientists to Egypt to find Stromer’s dinosaur graveyard and resurrect the German pioneer’s legacy. After weeks of digging, often under appalling conditions, they fail utterly at rediscovering any of Stromer’s dinosaur species. Then, just when they are about to declare defeat, Smith’s team discovers a dinosaur of such staggering immensity that it will stun the world of paleontology and make headlines around the globe. Masterfully weaving together history, science, and human drama, The Lost Dinosaurs of Egypt is the gripping account of not one but two of the twentieth century’s great expeditions of discovery.

Book excerpt: 1001 Walks You Must Experience Before You Die is the perfect guide to the world's most exhilarating walks. The ever-increasing passion for recreational walking is given fresh impetus with the creation of each new national park and wilderness area, the construction of every new walkway and the clearing of another fresh trail. The growth in popularity of pathways and woodland walks, and the conversion of canal banks and disused railways around the world to mixed-use walkand cycle-ways, means we now have unprecedented access to our cities and to ever-increasing tracts of our rural heritage. The wide-ranging, carefully chosen featured routes vary from the rugged delights of Wales's Pembrokeshire Coastal Path to the lush wilderness of Jamaica and the Harz Witches' Trail high in the German mountains. The hand-picked excursions cover overland paths, urban trails, mountain passes, coastal and shoreline strolls, and walks that explore the heritage of the world's most culturally rich destinations. There are gentle walks for beginners - some lasting barely an hour - and more demanding challenges for seasoned enthusiasts that will take months to achieve. Every page provides a wealth of information about a must-try walk, including start and end points, overall distance, difficulty rating, terrain and an estimation of the time it should take to complete, along with links to specially commissioned digital route maps. In short, 1001 Walks You Must Experience Before You Die is an essential reference guide for all those who love to get out of their cars, get off their bikes and lace up their walking shoes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the night of 13/14 October 1939, the German commander of U-boat U-47, Günther Prien, steered past the sunken block ships and chains which inadequately protected the British naval base at Scapa Flow in the Orkney Islands. The U-Boat sank the old British World War I battleship HMS Royal Oak and then escaped into the North Sea. The loss of the Royal Oak was insignificant in naval terms though over 800 men perished with her, however this was a bitter blow to British moral.
