Download or read book Queen Bee Breeding written by Elizabeth Frost and published by NSW Agriculture. This book was released on 2016-05-26 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whether your goal is to rear a few queen bees or thousands, this manual provides the basic knowledge and instruction to get you started and can be applied to beekeeping operations ranging from several thousand colonies to one or two. A successful queen bee producer is well organised, committed, and pays attention to hygiene, pest and disease status and environmental conditions at all apiaries: be they mating or queen breeding apiaries or those holding production and support colonies. With practice, you can refine your queen rearing methods to suit your operation and resources. This manual can always be your point of reference. Rearing queen bees is a specialist job. It takes a significant level of experience and resources to produce good quality mated queens. In addition, rearing your own queen bees can be a lot of fun and can add an extra interest to your beekeeping. Queens of superior quality result from a combination of: · good drone rearing and stocking practices · good queen rearing practices · a program of continual stock selection. Each of these three elements is addressed in-depth throughout this manual. This publication was written by technical specialists of the NSW Department of Primary Industries and produced by Education Delivery, Tocal College. It supports the following competencies from AHC10, The National Agriculture, Horticulture, Conservation and Land Management Training Package: · AHCBEK402A Perform queen bee artificial insemination · AHCBEK407A Rear queen bees

Download or read book Queensland Lords written by Janet Spillman and published by Boolarong Press. This book was released on 2015-09-10 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edward and Eliza Lord came to Moreton Bay in 1844, arriving as the remote convict outpost was opened up for free settlement. Members of Lancashire merchant families, they had invested their inheritances in NSW lands and a Sydney merchant firm, just before the drought and crash of 1841. They moved north to rebuild their fortunes, settling at Kangaroo Point before moving to the Darling Downs to start new commercial interests. Although financial success continued to elude them, the Lord family contributed to the settlement of colonial Queensland. Edward and Eliza’s great-great-grand-daughter, Janet Spillman, explores the way Queensland moulded the Lord family’s lives, and the way family members contributed to the colony’s development.

Download or read book Marketing Agricultural Products and Services written by Brian Walsh and published by NSW Agriculture. This book was released on 2015-07-17 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Times are changing. Until fairly recently many farmers were simply producers. Their energies were focused on growing crops and producing livestock. Selling was often just a matter of sending produce to the local saleyards or silo or contacting their stock and station agent. Producers were price takers rather than price managers. Now many farmers have become marketers rather than just producers, and in the near future many more will make the fundamental shift from an on-farm focus as price-takers to a wider approach that includes price risk management and marketing. Official marketing authorities are playing less of a role in marketing Australian agricultural produce. As part of this deregulation, farmers have many more choices, marketing tools and options that they can use to their advantage provided they know how to use them. At the same time consumer expectations have become more complex. Farmers find themselves required to respond to concerns about animal welfare practices, health and food safety aspects of their products, and the environmental and ethical impact of their production methods. The marketing landscape has therefore become more complex and producers need good marketing skills to navigate their way through the pros and cons of the many alternatives they face. This is the challenge for producers—to apply a balance of production, finance, people and marketing skills to run their farm businesses successfully. This book gives farmers the tools to become a marketer rather than just a producer. It details market specifications, product promotion, quality control and how to respond to consumer demands for animal welfare practices, health, food safety, environmental and ethical issues.
Download or read book The Tocal land and its people before and after 1822 written by David Brouwer and published by CB Alexander Foundation. This book was released on 2023-03-02 with total page 81 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1822 a young James Webber, recently arrived in the Colony, took up his land grant on the Paterson River. In that one act of possession, the landscape, managed and maintained by Aboriginal people for many centuries, was changed forever. James and his convict crew carved out a European-style agricultural enterprise by exploiting the rich diversity of the land. In a nod to the earlier custodians, he named his estate ‘Tocal’, an aboriginal word for ‘plenty’. Through toil and enterprise, successive owners grew rich on the Tocal lands, until, in 1965, private ownership ceased, and a new agricultural college was born on the site. That college, now retaining the name given to the land by its original custodians, grew into a thriving educational centre, with tentacles of training reaching throughout the nation. 2022 marks a significant milestone in the history of the land. This brief overview of its story—including the millennia before dispossession—has been compiled by four authors with over 170 years of combined memories associated with Tocal College and recording its agriculture and its history. Over its history, Tocal has touched many families and many lives, and it continues to expand its reach, including to the descendants of its original peoples who cared for and respected its resources. This book in a small way pays homage to all of those lives.
Download or read book The Tailor and the Shipwright written by Robert Westphal and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2019-04-01 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sydney, Australia 1800s. Thomas O’Neil, an Irish convict and tailor, arrives in Sydney having left his two daughters on the shores of Dublin. Appointed as Governor King’s tailor, O’Neil establishes a successful business in Upper Pitts Row and soon finds a wife, Anne Kennedy. They are to be among the first settlers of Mosman, along with their daughter. Two years later, 12-year-old William Foster disembarks from an eight-month journey from Portsmouth after avoiding his death sentence. Governor King, horrified that young boys are being transported, offers William the position of shipwright apprentice. He quickly moves up the ranks and starts a successful business in The Rocks. Eventually, William falls for O’Neil’s young daughter, Anastasia and the two begin a life together. Inspired by extensive research into his own ancestry of the O’Neil and Foster families, Robert Westphal gives a unique historical account of convict history and early Sydney. The Tailor and the Shipwright is a compelling read of resilience that depicts the strength of generational ties.
