Book Pastoral Theology in the Classical Tradition

Download or read book Pastoral Theology in the Classical Tradition written by Andrew Purves and published by Westminster John Knox Press. This book was released on 2001-11-01 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Too often pastoral care is uninformed by historical practice and is overly influenced by psychological theory and practice, according to Andrew Purves. At least one consequence of this is that it is often disaffiliated from the church's theological heritage. Purves examines Christian writers from the past who represent the classical tradition in pastoral theology--classical in the sense that they and their texts have shaped the minds and practices of pastors in enduring ways. He reflects on texts from Gregory Nazianzus, John Chrysostom, Gregory the Great, Martin Bucer, and Richard Baxter. He includes a brief biography of each author, introduces the major themes in the writer's theology, and discusses the issues arising for pastoral work.

Excerpt: ... ing with it divine powers and fruits, and producing a relation to God in Christ and to His eternal kingdom, which manifests itself in a life of obedience and blessedness. If preaching is to accomplish this object, it must give the words which Christ gave to His disciples as God's word; God's word must be taught in the sense in which it was taught by Jesus Christ and His apostles; that is, it must be taught in exact accordance with Scripture. For this reason it is not every sermon that is God's word. Very vague ideas prevail on this point. This subject is minutely discussed by Burk, Collections for Pastoral Theology, the older edition, pp. 748--752 (edition by Oehler, p. 459); and by Sailer in his concise Admonitions to Young Preachers, p. 11: "A Christian preacher will, like a steward in the house of God, allow no one to lay any other foundation in the Church of God than that which is the true foundation, apart from which there is no salvation. A Christian sower will scatter divine seed according to the teaching and the example of Jesus and His apostles. He who teaches God's word, will teach regarding God and Jesus and the Holy Ghost what Christ Himself teaches: regarding man, his fall and restoration, his destiny, and so forth, he will likewise teach what Jesus taught. Let him who would teach God's word teach what was taught by Christ's apostles in Christ's spirit." In order to determine more exactly the fundamental idea of the pastoral office as found in Scripture, we add--2. Features of the pastoral life of the apostles, with special reference to doctrine, government, and service. First of all, for a right apprehension of the superintendent's position and his work as a leader, we find 1 Pet. v. 1-3 eminently instructive. From this...

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pastoral Theology Pastoral Theology, though forming a vital and organic part of the science of Christian Theology, is a theme evasive of analysis and thus somewhat difficult to treat, having regard as it does to relations which are almost wholly spiritual and personal, and whose roots are deep in the affections. As well might one try to construct a philosophy for the economy of a household and the affectionate and moral (the Germans have a better word, relations of parents and children, as to make a science of those fine relations of a Christian pastor to his flock which constitute the most profound and spirit ual of human ties. Book A New Testament Biblical Theology

Download or read book A New Testament Biblical Theology written by G. K. Beale and published by Baker Books. This book was released on 2011-12-01 with total page 1198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this comprehensive exposition, a leading New Testament scholar explores the unfolding theological unity of the entire Bible from the vantage point of the New Testament. G. K. Beale, coeditor of the award-winning Commentary on the New Testament Use of the Old Testament, examines how the New Testament storyline relates to and develops the Old Testament storyline. Beale argues that every major concept of the New Testament is a development of a concept from the Old and is to be understood as a facet of the inauguration of the latter-day new creation and kingdom. Offering extensive interaction between the two testaments, this volume helps readers see the unifying conceptual threads of the Old Testament and how those threads are woven together in Christ. This major work will be valued by students of the New Testament and pastors alike.

Book The Theology of the New Testament Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Theology of the New Testament Classic Reprint written by George Barker Stevens and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 652 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Theology of the New Testament No one has written on the subject with finer insight and discrimination. The brilliant treatise of Professor Menegoz, entitled he Peehe et la Redemption d'apres St. Paul, has afforded me many useful suggestions. With none of these writers, however, have I been able in all respects to agree. Especially do I dissent from the interpretations given by Wendt and Beyschlag to those portions of the New Testament which relate to the person and work of Christ, and from the presuppositions on which Holtzmann's construction and estimate of New Testament history and theology rest. Appended to the volume will be found a select bibliography which comprises the most important recent literature of the subject. Articles and brochures on minor topics in Biblical Theology, which would be likely to interest only the specialist, have not been included. In accordance with its somewhat general purpose the list is limited to more comprehensive works. A much fuller bibliography, arranged on a different principle, is prefixed to Holtzmann's Lehrbuch. As respects its aim the present work is not apologetic or controversial. It seeks to expound, not to defend. It also recognizes the boundaries between the explicit teachings of the New Testament and inferences which may be drawn from them, however natural or apparently necessary such inferences may seem to be. The limitations of space which were prescribed for the volume have rendered it necessary to bestow careful attention upon the question of proportion and to present the various subjects which are discussed as succinctly as possible. Every chapter has involved a study in condensation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pastoral Theology: The Theory of a Gospel Ministry They appeared to us, at once too extended to be inserted in the course, and yet so important that we could not content ourselves with simply referring to them. Bengel's Thoughts, which precede the Appendix, have been translated from the German, by M. Vinet, and published separately in a small 16mo pamphlet. Allusions will occasionally be found to the institutions of the National Church of the Canton de Vaud. We may remind the reader that the greater number of M. Vinet's hearers were preparing for the ministry in this church, with which he did not cease to be connected, so far as worship is concerned, until a Free Church was established in the Canton de Vaud, in consequence of the resignation of a large number of the pastors in the National Church. We hope that this course of Pastoral Theology will be well received, not only by Ministers of the Gospel, and students in Theology, for whom it is more immediately designed, but also by the religious public generally. M. Vinet's fundamental idea should recommend his book to the serious attention of all friends of the gospel. The pastor is not, in his view, an isolated being, banished from the general community of Christians into the retirement of a remote and solitary dignity, to which simple believers may not aspire. He regards him not so much above them, as at their head, - their advanced leader in the work of love. Accordingly his functions are not his exclusive prerogative; on the contrary, all ought to associate actively with him, and will, in fact, so associate with him according to the measure of their faithfulness. The pastor is not different from the Christian; he is the typal Christian, - the example for his flock, 1 Tim. iv. 12. All Christians, therefore, will find that precious instruction may be gathered from this book. This second edition is conformable to the first, published 1850, with the exception of some new notes and a few corrections. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Testament Theology IT has been our endeavor to prepare a book which, on the one hand, shall be sufficiently free from scholastic formality to be fairly acceptable to the general reader, and, on the other hand, sufficiently compact in state ment, logical in arrangement, and fundamental in its treatment of the subject-matter, to be fitted for service as a text-book. The conviction that there is room for a treatise which seeks to exemplify these characteristics is our principal excuse for presenting the volume to the public.
