Book Pastoral systems in marginal environments

Download or read book Pastoral systems in marginal environments written by J.A. Milne and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-08-28 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pastoral systems are some of the most fragile human ecosystems that exist and are under threat from the expansion of cultivation, changes in social patterns and climate change. These ecosystems are of major importance since they contain a rich biological and cultural diversity. The aim of the book is to take a holistic view of pastoral systems by bringing together papers written by specialists in plant and animal ecology with an interest in the application of their research with papers taking an economic and social perspective. The focus is on marginal environments where the issues are in greatest relief with the papers tackling key issues in semi-arid and disadvantaged temperate areas. The key issues relate to identifying the biological constraints of these pastoral systems, understanding soil/plant/animal relationships, exploring biodiversity, landscape and social issues in multi-functional systems and providing solutions to constraints through a number of case studies. By comparing and contrasting these two environments, the book will be taking a completely new approach to understanding how pastoral systems function and how they will evolve in the future. The book is of value to all those with an interest in pastoral systems by providing an up-to-date account of current understanding of these multi-functional systems and new insights into how they function and how they will develop in the future.

Book Pastoral Livestock Marketing in Eastern Africa

Download or read book Pastoral Livestock Marketing in Eastern Africa written by John G. McPeak and published by ITDG Publishing. This book was released on 2006 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An in-depth, evidence-based investigation of livestock marketing in Eastern Africa which approaches the issues from a variety of disciplinary perspectives including anthropology, economics, geography, and rangeland ecology. Editors John G. McPeak and Peter D. Little present current findings on how livestock markets in this area operate, describe policy options that help markets function more effectively, and identify topics meriting further research. The issues are examined at a variety of levels (household, market, national, and international), and many of the authors place emphasis on cross-border trade: an area not currently well understood but of substantial economic importance. The book is written in a clear, straightforward style and, though the authors come from a variety of fields, jargon and discipline-specific terms are kept to a minimum.

Book Grazing Communities

Download or read book Grazing Communities written by Letizia Bindi and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2022-05-13 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pastoralism is a diffused and ancient form of human subsistence and probably one of the most studied by anthropologists at the crossroads between continuities and transformations. The present critical discourse on sustainable and responsible development implies a change of practices, a huge socio-economic transformation, and the return of new shepherds and herders in different European regions. Transhumance and extensive breeding are revitalized as a potential resource for inner and rural areas of Europe against depopulation and as an efficient form of farming deeply influencing landscape and functioning as a perfect eco-system service. This book is an occasion to reconsider grazing communities’ frictions in the new global heritage scenario.

Book Economic Spaces of Pastoral Production and Commodity Systems

Download or read book Economic Spaces of Pastoral Production and Commodity Systems written by Richard Le Heron and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-29 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pastoralism as a land use system is under recognized in terms of its contribution to food provision, livelihoods as well as to human security. This book is the first attempt to explore the dynamics of economic spaces of pastoral production and commodity systems for explicit South and North positionings. It develops and applies a new approach in combining agri-food, market and commodity chain perspectives with livelihood approaches. This enables new understandings of re-aligning exchange relations between the global south and the global north. The case studies presented open up new empirical insights in largely under-researched areas, such as Afghanistan, Chad, Tibet and Siberia and very recent changes in industrialized economies with major pastoral sectors. The book reveals new evidence and theoretical insights about significant changes in established producer-consumer relations in agriculture and food.

Book Pastoral women tenure and governance

Download or read book Pastoral women tenure and governance written by Flintan, Fiona and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 2021-12-31 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Customary pastoral tenure and governance systems are relatively broad sets of institutions characterized by principles of collectivity, flexibility, adaptability, and multiple uses by multiple users (Davies et al. 2016; Flintan et al. 2021). These tenure systems are becoming ever more complex as livelihoods and land use diversify and as pastoralists attempt to access land and resources through mechanisms other than their customary institutions, including through privatization and formalized land certification (Flintan et al. 2021; Nori 2021). The resulting tenure systems are described by Robinson (2019) as “complex mosaics.” Alternatively, Flintan (2021) (following Niamir-Fuller 2005) refers to them as “nested” systems where regulating laws and institutions work on the basis of “territory” or “domain,” under which there is a hierarchy of nested, overlapping bundles of rights for diverse sets of users and often for the same resource. Despite these complexities, collective tenure continues to be core, ensuring pastoralist systems function well and their resilience to crises such as drought is strengthened.
