Book Pastoral systems in marginal environments

Download or read book Pastoral systems in marginal environments written by J.A. Milne and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-08-28 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pastoral systems are some of the most fragile human ecosystems that exist and are under threat from the expansion of cultivation, changes in social patterns and climate change. These ecosystems are of major importance since they contain a rich biological and cultural diversity. The aim of the book is to take a holistic view of pastoral systems by bringing together papers written by specialists in plant and animal ecology with an interest in the application of their research with papers taking an economic and social perspective. The focus is on marginal environments where the issues are in greatest relief with the papers tackling key issues in semi-arid and disadvantaged temperate areas. The key issues relate to identifying the biological constraints of these pastoral systems, understanding soil/plant/animal relationships, exploring biodiversity, landscape and social issues in multi-functional systems and providing solutions to constraints through a number of case studies. By comparing and contrasting these two environments, the book will be taking a completely new approach to understanding how pastoral systems function and how they will evolve in the future. The book is of value to all those with an interest in pastoral systems by providing an up-to-date account of current understanding of these multi-functional systems and new insights into how they function and how they will develop in the future.

Book Sacred Ecology

Download or read book Sacred Ecology written by Fikret Berkes and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 1999 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr Berkes approaches traditional ecological knowledge as a knowledge-practice-belief complex. This complex considers four interrelated levels: local knowledge (species specific); resource management systems (integrating local knowledge with practice); social institutions (rules and codes of behavior); and world view (religion, ethics, and broadly defined belief systems). Divided into three parts that deal with concepts, practice, and issues, respectively, the book first discusses the emergence of the field, its intellectual roots and global significance. Substantive material is then included on how traditional ecological and management systems actually work. At the same time it explores a diversity of relationships that different groups have developed with their environment, using extensive case studies from research conducted with the Cree Indians of James Bay, in the eastern subarctic of North America. The final section examines traditional knowledge as a challenge to the positivist-reductionist paradigm in Western science, and concludes with a discussion of the potential of traditional ecological knowledge to inject a measure of ethics into the science of ecology and resource management.

Book The Governance of Rangelands

Download or read book The Governance of Rangelands written by Pedro M. Herrera and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-10-10 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rangelands are large natural landscapes that can include grasslands, shrublands, savannahs and woodlands. They are greatly influenced by, and often dependent on, the action of herbivores. In the majority of rangelands the dominant herbivores are found in domestic herds that are managed by mobile pastoralists. Most pastoralists manage their rangelands communally, benefitting from the greater flexibility and seasonal resource access that common property regimes can offer. As this book shows, this creates a major challenge for governance and institutions. This work improves our understanding of the importance of governance, how it can be strengthened and the principles that underpin good governance, in order to prevent degradation of rangelands and ensure their sustainability. It describes the nature of governance at different levels: community governance, state governance, international governance, and the unique features of rangelands that demand collective action (issues of scale, ecological disequilibrium and seasonality). A series of country case studies is presented, drawn from a wide spectrum of examples from Africa, the Middle East, Central Asia, Europe and North America. These provide contrasting lessons which are summarised to promote improved governance of rangelands and pastoralist livelihoods.

Download or read book Everglades written by Steve Davis and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1994-01-01 with total page 954 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 31 chapters provide a wealth of previously unpublished information, plus topic syntheses, for a wide range of ecological parameters. These include the physical driving forces that created and continue to shape the Everglades and patterns and processes of its flora and fauna. The book summarizes recent studies of the region's vegetation, alligators, wading birds, and endangered species such as the snail kite and Florida panther. This referee-reviewed volume is the product of collaboration among 58 international authors from 27 institutional affiliations over nearly five years. The book concludes with a synthesis of system-wide restoration hypotheses, as they apply to the Everglades, that represent the integration and a collective viewpoint from the preceding 30 chapters. Techniques and systems learned here can be applied to ecosystems around the world.

Book Adaptive Environmental Management

Download or read book Adaptive Environmental Management written by Catherine Allan and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-06-05 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adaptive management is the recommended means for continuing ecosystem management and use of natural resources, especially in the context of ‘integrated natural resource management’. Conceptually, adaptive management is simply learning from past management actions to improve future planning and management. However, adaptive management has proved difficult to achieve in practice. With a view to facilitating better practice, this new book presents lessons learned from case studies, to provide managers with ready access to relevant information. Cases are drawn from a number of disciplinary fields, including management of protected areas, watersheds and farms, rivers, forests, biodiversity and pests. Examples from Australia, New Zealand, the USA, Canada, the UK and Europe are presented at a variety of scales, from individual farms, through regional projects, to state-wide planning. While the book is designed primarily for practitioners and policy advisors in the fields of environmental and natural resource management, it will also provide a valuable reference for students and researchers with interests in environmental, natural resource and conservation management.

Book Biodiversity Loss

Download or read book Biodiversity Loss written by Charles Perrings and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1997-01-28 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume reports key findings of the Biodiversity Program of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences' Beijer Institute. The program brought together a number of eminent ecologists and economists to consider the nature and significance of the biodiversity problem. In encouraging collaborative work between these closely related disciplines it sought to shed new light on the concept of diversity; the implications of biological diversity for the functioning of ecosystems; the driving forces behind biodiversity loss; and the options for promoting biodiversity conservation. The results of the program are surprising. It is shown that the core of the biodiversity problem is a loss of ecosystem resilience and the insurance it provides against the uncertain environmental effects of economic and population growth. This is as much a local as a global problem, implying that biodiversity conservation offers benefits that are as much local as global. The solutions as well as the causes of biodiversity loss lie in incentives to local users.

Book Investing in Indigenous Natural Resource Management

Download or read book Investing in Indigenous Natural Resource Management written by M. K. Luckert and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book assesses the case for investing in Indigenous natural resource management (NRM) in tropical Australia. Indigenous people provide a number of public goods in relation to environmental management for which they are not remunerated. Their presence on country should be viewed as a national asset. The health of Australia?s Indigenous people remains unacceptably. Individual and collective engagement with ancestrally significant land and sea improves health outcomes, while also supporting individual autonomy and social cohesion through cultural practices. This book brings together a broad suite of authors with an understanding of Indigenous NRM and the economics thereof. Indigenous NRM emerges as a ?keystone policy area? that could allow integration of many policy fields commonly considered in isolation. The editors of this book all have wide experience in the fields covered by this book. Professor Marty Luckert from the University of Alberta has been offering insights into the economics of environmental management around the world for decades, Professor Bruce Campbell from Charles Darwin University (CDU) has an international reputation for his work on livelihoods among the rural poor, Julian Gorman (CDU) has played a key role in fostering wildlife-based industries among Indigenous people in the monsoonal tropics of the Northern Territory and Professor Stephen Garnett (CDU) has broad experience in management of tropical environments, particularly northern Australia.
