Book The Spanish Arcadia

Download or read book The Spanish Arcadia written by Javier Irigoyen-García and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2014-01-01 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Spanish Arcadia analyzes the figure of the shepherd in the sixteenth- and seventeenth-century Spanish imaginary, exploring its centrality to the discourses on racial, cultural, and religious identity. Drawing on a wide range of documents, including theological polemics on blood purity, political treatises, manuals on animal husbandry, historiography, paintings, epic poems, and Spanish ballads, Javier Irigoyen-García argues that the figure of the shepherd takes on extraordinary importance in the reshaping of early modern Spanish identity. The Spanish Arcadia contextualizes pastoral romances within a broader framework and assesses how they inform other cultural manifestations. In doing so, Irigoyen-García provides incisive new ideas about the social and ethnocentric uses of the genre, as well as its interrelation with ideas of race, animal husbandry, and nation building in early modern Spain.

Book Spanish Pastoral Drama Classic Reprint

Download or read book Spanish Pastoral Drama Classic Reprint written by James Pyle Wickersham Crawford and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-25 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Spanish Pastoral Drama IN the belief that a fairly intensive study must be made of the various types of Spanish dramatic literature of the six t6enth century before we can properly appreciate the import ance of Lope de Vega and his contemporaries, I have here attempted to treat in some detail the development of the pas toral drama in Spain. I have included in the first chapter only the material which seemed necessary in order to show the sources from which the early plays of Enzina were derived and I have disregarded the comic scenes found in so many plays in which shepherds take part, since these belong, in my opinion, to the history of the farce. In the last chapter, I have merely tried to study pastoral themes up to the time when they were fused into the mythological and lyrical drama by Calderon de la Barca. I gratefully acknowledge my indebted ness to my friend and colleague, Dr. Hugo Albert Rennert, for valuable suggestions and criticisms. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Spanish Pastoral Romances: A Dissertation Presented to the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Freiburg I. B. For the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy The marked favor with which the Spanish pastoral romance was greeted, and the signal success it immediately enjoyed, may, perhaps, be explained (in addition to the reason already given) by the fact that the Diana, ' its first representative, was a work of real genius, while the peculiar temperament and susceptibility of the Spanish people, were, doubtless, also a factor in its success. The pastoral romance was not, however, originally a growth Of the Spanish soil, but was transplanted from Italy, its home. Book Pastoral Quechua

Download or read book Pastoral Quechua written by Alan Durston and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pastoral Quechua explores the story of how the Spanish priests and missionaries of the Catholic church in post-conquest Peru systematically attempted to "incarnate" Christianity in Quechua, a large family of languages and dialects spoken by the dense Andes populations once united under the Inca empire. By codifying (and imposing) a single written standard, based on a variety of Quechua spoken in the former Inca capital of Cuzco, and through their translations of devotional, catechetical, and liturgical texts for everyday use in parishes, the missionary translators were on the front lines of Spanish colonialism in the Andes. The Christian pastoral texts in Quechua are important witnesses to colonial interactions and power relations. Durston examines the broad historical contexts of Christian writing in Quechua; the role that Andean religious images and motifs were given by the Spanish translators in creating a syncretic Christian-Andean iconography of God, Christ, and Mary; the colonial linguistic ideologies and policies in play; and the mechanisms of control of the subjugated population that can be found in the performance practices of Christian liturgy, the organization of the texts, and even in certain aspects of grammar. "Pastoral Quechua is an entryway into the world of colonial Quechua culture through language, showing how Spanish missionaries did not merely translate Christianity into the Inka language, but built up new and complex syntheses of inka and Spanish worlds. A foundational work, it opens up new and untouched ways of understanding the impact of European colonialism in the Americas, making a singular contribution to colonial history, to historical linguistics, and to the anthropology of colonialism." --Bruce Mannheim, University of Michigan, author of The Language of the Inka since the European Invasion "Pastoral Quechua is a wonderful volume that will be of interest to a broad range of scholars including historians, linguists, anthropologists, as well as scholars in all fields interested in Peru. The study focuses on the practice of translation, as the author states, but it is much more than that. It is a meticulously researched work that provides careful linguistic analysis conceptualized within an historical study of Catholic evangelization in colonial Peru." --Thomas B. F. Cummins, Dumbarton Oaks Professor of Pre-Columbian and Colonial Art, Harvard University
