We have long been accustomed to build on stones placed in position by the world-famed Pasteur, but it is not commonly recognized that many of these stones rest upon the deeper foundations laid by Pasteur's con temporary, Antoine Bechamp. It is fitting that one should hesitate to disturb stones set by those already gone from us, but when a substructure has once been revealed, there can be no question as to the liberty of extending the in vestigation. Probably no reader of this book will at first be prepared to accept much that is said in criticism of Pasteur and in worship of Bechamp, but as the perusal proceeds, his eyes will be opened to many references for which the author is in no way responsible except for their collation. It is greatly to be desired that the fundamental work of Bechamp should be far more widely recognized, and a debt is due to the author for throwing the limelight on his work. Starting as a pure chemist, and becoming interested in the science of crystallography, it was not until his life at Lille, a town with important brewing industries, that Pasteur became interested in the biological side of chemical problems. Many years before it had been noted by qagniard-latour that yeast was composed of cells capable of reproducing themselves by a sort of budding, and he made the keen suggestion that it was possibly through some effect of their vegetation that the sugar was transformed. But Liebig's view everywhere prevailed that the ferment was an alterable, organic substance which exercised a catalytic force, transforming the sugar. It was in August, 1857, that Pasteur sent his famous paper on Lactic Acid Fermentation to the Lille Scientific Society; and in December of the same year he presented to the Academy of Sciences a paper on Alcoholic Fermentation, in which he concluded that the deduplication of sugar into alcohol and carbonic acid is cor relevant to a phenomena of life. These studies had the signal effect of diverting the man from the course of his previous more strictly chemical studies. It is interesting to note how slowly these views dislocated the dominant theories of Liebig. More than ten years after their announcement I remember that we had in our chemical lectures the catalytic theory very fully presented. This biography takes us from Pasteur's formative years as a curious and bright child, to the first glimmers of promise he showed through school. His keen understanding of scientific principles, and a drive to enquire, experiment and innovate was soon apparent to his tutors. Pasteur was particularly interested in microbiology; his work upon germ theory and bacteriology revolutionized the idea of disease and the spread of sickness. Pasteur is also remembered for advancing the science of vaccination. The rabies virus - at the time referred to as hydrophobia for its thirst-inducing qualities - was a deadly scourge upon France and wider Europe. Through rigorous experiment, Pasteur found that vaccines administered in a timely manner prevented rabies from progressing to its fatal stage. This discovery paved the way for further advances in vaccines, increasing their significance in disease prevention. Given accolades by the government of France, and famed for retaining his diligence well into his senior years, Pasteur was granted a state funeral for his accomplishments.
