Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lest We Forget: Reminiscences of the Pioneers of Grant County, Indiana So the History Department of the Marion High School has attempted to save a few stories of these early days in Grant County. We do not claim that all contained in our little booklet is authentic, Old age forgets, and legend is not always truth, but the philosophy of these older people has been as a sort of benediction, and a joy has been ours as we followed them into the recesses of memory as they lifted the veil Of the past; yea, more than that, we of the now have seen in their dear old faces the Light that fades not, the dawn of a Beyond that they are nearing. Book Standard History of Adams and Wells Counties Indiana Vol 1

Download or read book Standard History of Adams and Wells Counties Indiana Vol 1 written by John W. Tyndall and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Standard History of Adams and Wells Counties, Indiana, Vol. 1: An Authentic Narrative of the Past, With an Extended Survey of Modern Developments in the Progress of Town and Country Indiana has always stood for not only prosperity, but originality, whether considered from the standpoint of the commonwealth or the people. In politics it is often classed as doubtful, because its men and women are thinkers, as well as doers, and are not led against their wills. Especially is the northeastern part of Indiana typical of prosperity and energy, and Adams and Wells Counties are centers of "God's country," as the real Hoosier calls his home hunting grounds, his picturesque streams, his teeming fields and his hamlets, towns and cities. It is this diverse, useful and interesting country and people which this history, now finished, has endeavored to depict. The counties, which so worthily perpetuate the names of a great statesman and a gallant soldier and Indian fighter, have put forth gallant soldiers of the later days, successful business men, women of culture, and numerous characters of both sexes whose strength and activity have been given to social, moral and religious development. From the very outset, it was the earnest aim of editors and publishers to gather all material information bearing upon the multitude of topics which logically called for treatment and which the prospectus had promised. As a rule, the responses were prompt and hearty, although in scattered instances, and despite repeated requests, the facts obtained were not as full as desired. Without mentioning all who have thus promoted our enterprise, and co-operated in the lightening of our labors, the editors acknowledge their obligations to the advisory boards of both counties and to the editors of the newspapers, without exception. While it has been the constant aim of the editors to give all credit who have materially contributed to the upbuilding of any community or institution, the object has also been kept in mind of endeavoring to observe literary proportions in the amount of space accorded to the many topics considered. In the progress and completion of the work, we have endeavored to be impartial, as becomes all historians, whether writing of counties or of countries. Book History of Rush County Indiana

Download or read book History of Rush County Indiana written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 882 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Rush County, Indiana: From the Earliest Time to the Present, With Biographical Sketches, Notes, Etc., Together With a Short History of the Northwest, the Indiana Territory, and the State of Indiana After several months of almost uninterrupted labor, the History of Rush County is completed. In issuing it [to our patrons we do not claim for it perfection; but that it contains that reasonable de gree of accuracy which only could be expected of us, is confidently asserted. The difficulties that surround such an undertaking can scarcely be realized by one who has never engaged in work of the kind. To reconcile the doubtful and often conflicting statements that are so frequently made by those who would seem to be best informed, is a task both perplexing and tedious. Yet we believe that we have been able to present a history of the county that is as nearly complete as reason can demand, and the book exceeds our promises in almost every particular. We have endeavored to set forth the facts in as concise and unostentatious language as possible, believing it is for the facts and not for rhetorical display that the book is desired. The mechanical execution and general appear ance of the volume will recommend it, even to the fastidious. The arrangement of the matter is such as to render an index almost superfluous, as the subject under consideration is at the top Of every right-hand page. For further details the italic subdivisions will enable the reader to refer with readiness to any topic. In the spelling of proper names there is such a wide difference, even among mem bers of the same family, and it is a matter of so arbitrary a nature, that our only guide was each man's desire. Every clew that gave promise of important facts connected with the county's history has been investigated by those engaged in the work. We believe the volume will be favorablyreceived and highly appreciated by those for whom it was prepared. Our thanks are due to those who have rendered us assistance and to our patrons.
