Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Past and Present of Adams County, Nebraska, Vol. 1 In presenting this history of Adams County I wish to acknowledge my indebtedness to many who have kindly and competently assisted. To the supervising editor, Judge William R. Burton, I am indebted for frequent helpful suggestions as well as his own contribution, that portion of Chapter X that deals with the bench and the portion of Chapter XXI that deals with the homesteader and the homestead laws. In Chapter XVIII are the contributions of Mrs. John H. Slaker and Mrs. William H. Fuller. Mrs. Slaker's contribution is a faithful and detailed record of the Woman's Club, an organization of ever growing importance in Hastings. Mrs. Slaker has also sketched the earlier cultural clubs of which it is the outgrowth. Mrs. Fuller has here preserved the record of Niobrara Chapter of the Daughters of The American Revolution. Mr. A. H. Cramer's intimate acquaintance with early affairs and his clear recollections of them have proven of inestimable value in this compilation. If this volume shall in any measure enhance the appreciation of its readers of the community described, its growth and institutions, its possibilities, and of the men and women who have made it what it is, and will stimulate in them a desire to preserve the records of future developments - then the work shall not entirely have failed of its purpose. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Hamilton and Clay Counties, Nebraska, Vol. 1 Full volumes have been written on the history of Nebraska, going into long, laborious detail upon each important topic. But so many readers feel that the task of familiarizing themselves with volume after volume is too exacting upon the time of the busy, hurried twentieth-century individual. So it has been considered expedient to introduce the county historical section of this work with an abridged review of the historical development of the State of Nebraska. That this may be equally interesting to readers of all classes, be brief enough to be thoroughly examined, be systematized so that the salient facts can be found whenever reference is desired, this part of the work has been compiled by the undersigned and many others, whose work has assisted him in a synoptical, chronological and encyclopedic arrangement. He was born in Logan county, Ohio, November 10, 1838, was reared in Union county, that state, and pursued his education in the public schools near his father's home. Through the periods of vacation he assisted in the work of the farm, early becoming familiar with the best meth ods of tilling the soil and caring for the crops. He continued upon the farm until, feeling that his duty to his country was paramount to all else, he enlisted for service on the 17th of August, 1861, as a member of Company F, Thirty first Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, with which he served for two years, seven months and nine days, when he was honorably discharged on account of disability. He participated in the hard fought battles of Perryville, Stone River and Chickamauga and a number of hotly contested skirmishes and was twice hit with spent balls but was not wounded. However, he suffered injuries owing to the rigors and hardships of war, for he has never fully recovered his health and his army service has caused deafness in the left ear. For a time he was in the hospital at Chattanooga and also at Nashville, and at the latter place was honorably discharged.
