Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Jewish Literature and Other Essays The following essays were delivered during the last ten years, in the form of addresses, before the largest associations in the great cities of Germany. Each one is a dear and precious possession to me. As I once more pass them in review, reminiscences fill my mind Of solemn occasions and impressive scenes, of excellent men and charming women. I feel as though I were sending the best beloved child ren of my fancy out into the world, and sadness seizes me when I realize that they no longer belong to me alone - that they have become the property Of strangers. The living word falling upon the ear of the listener is one thing; quite another the word staring from the cold, printed page. Will my thoughts be accorded the same friendly welcome that greeted them when first they were uttered? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Jewish Ideals and Other Essays It is a mistake, I consider, to attempt to rewrite the essays written in youth. One is so different from one's former self in such a case, that it seems like rewriting another man's work. I have avoided this mistake in the present instance. I thought it would be more interesting, both to myself and to others, if I were to summarise here the points on which my views have changed, or which I would nowadays put otherwise, with regard to the topics discussed in some of the following papers. Book The Hebrew Book in Early Modern Italy

Download or read book The Hebrew Book in Early Modern Italy written by Joseph R. Hacker and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2011-08-19 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rise of printing had major effects on culture and society in the early modern period, and the presence of this new technology—and the relatively rapid embrace of it among early modern Jews—certainly had an effect on many aspects of Jewish culture. One major change that print seems to have brought to the Jewish communities of Christian Europe, particularly in Italy, was greater interaction between Jews and Christians in the production and dissemination of books. Starting in the early sixteenth century, the locus of production for Jewish books in many places in Italy was in Christian-owned print shops, with Jews and Christians collaborating on the editorial and technical processes of book production. As this Jewish-Christian collaboration often took place under conditions of control by Christians (for example, the involvement of Christian typesetters and printers, expurgation and censorship of Hebrew texts, and state control of Hebrew printing), its study opens up an important set of questions about the role that Christians played in shaping Jewish culture. Presenting new research by an international group of scholars, this book represents a step toward a fuller understanding of Jewish book history. Individual essays focus on a range of issues related to the production and dissemination of Hebrew books as well as their audiences. Topics include the activities of scribes and printers, the creation of new types of literature and the transformation of canonical works in the era of print, the external and internal censorship of Hebrew books, and the reading interests of Jews. An introduction summarizes the state of scholarship in the field and offers an overview of the transition from manuscript to print in this period.

Book Hebrew Humour and Other Essays Classic Reprint

Download or read book Hebrew Humour and Other Essays Classic Reprint written by J. Chotzner and published by . This book was released on 2016-07-22 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hebrew Humour and Other Essays The present volume contains a collection of essays, the majority of which were read as papers before various literary societies, such as the Inter national Congress of Orientalists, the Biblical Archaeological Society, and the Jews' College Literary Association. Several of them have already appeared in various periodicals, such as the Imperial Asiatic Review, the Jewish Quarterly Review, and the Jewish Chronicle, and are now reproduced, with some slight modification, by the courtesy of the editors. Translations of some of the essays have also been published in Hebrew, French, and German periodicals. The essays, it may be remarked, deal somewhat extensively with the humour and satire that is not infrequently to be found in the works both of ancient and modern Hebrew writers; and, as this subject has hitherto attracted but little attention, I am not without hope that these pages may be of interest to the general reader. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Judaism and St. Paul: Two Essays The two essays of which the present little volume is composed were written some months ago, but various circumstances have prevented an earlier publication. I am indebted to several friends for many suggestions and corrections, for which I now tender them my grateful thanks. It should perhaps be stated that the first essay deliberately omits the consideration of a number of questions and topics which, though closely connected with its main subject, have been so fully discussed and set forth (from different and opposing points of View) that it seemed unnecessary to repeat what has been already so ably and learnedly said by others. Hence a certain allusiveness in the treatment, which stu dents oi St. Paul will readily forgive, but which will yet, I trust, not render the essay unintelligible to the general reader. This book was released on 2018-04-27 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Jew and Gentile, Essays on Jewish Apologetics and Kindred Historical Subjects, Vol. 3 The position of the Jewish people is absolutely unique. The Jews are not only found in all lands of civilization and semi-civilization but their position enters conspicuously into all prominent questions of public life. The relation between Church and State, one of the most vital problems of humanity, which dominated the politics of caliphs and czars, which impeded the unification of Italy and cemented the North American colonies into a nation of unparalleled strength, has to a greater or lesser extent always been linked with the Jewish question. This book was released on 2015-07-26 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Jewish Eugenics, and Other Essays; Three Papers Read Before the New York Board of Jewish Ministers, 1915 Who knows the cause of Israel's survival? Why did the Jew survive the onslaughts of Time, when others, numerically and politically stronger, succumbed? Obedience to the Law of Life, declares the modern student of eugenics, was the saving quality which rendered the Jewish race immune from disease and destruction. "The Jews, ancient and modern," says Dr. Stanton Coit, "have always understood the science of eugenics, and have governed themselves in accordance with it; hence the preservation of the Jewish race." To be sure eugenics as a science could hardly have existed among the ancient Jews; but many eugenic rules were certainly incorporated in the large collection of Biblical and Rabbinical laws. Book Classic Essays in Early Rabbinic Culture and History

Download or read book Classic Essays in Early Rabbinic Culture and History written by Christine Hayes and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-04-17 with total page 564 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together a set of classic essays on early rabbinic history and culture, seven of which have been translated into English especially for this publication. The studies are presented in three sections according to theme: (1) sources, methods and meaning; (2) tradition and self-invention; and (3) rabbinic contexts. The first section contains essays that made a pioneering contribution to the identification of sources for the historical and cultural study of the rabbinic period, articulated methodologies for the study of rabbinic history and culture, or addressed historical topics that continue to engage scholars to the present day. The second section contains pioneering contributions to our understanding of the culture of the sages whose sources we deploy for the purposes of historical reconstruction, contributions which grappled with the riddle and rhythm of the rabbis’ emergence to authority, or pierced the veil of their self-presentation. The essays in the third section made contributions of fundamental importance to our understanding of the broader cultural contexts of rabbinic sources, identified patterns of rabbinic participation in prevailing cultural systems, or sought to define with greater precision the social location of the rabbinic class within Jewish society of late antiquity. The volume is introduced by a new essay from the editor, summarizing the field and contextualizing the reprinted papers. About the series Classic Essays in Jewish History (Series Editor: Kenneth Stow) The 6000 year history of the Jewish peoples, their faith and their culture is a subject of enormous importance, not only to the rapidly growing body of students of Jewish studies itself, but also to those working in the fields of Byzantine, eastern Christian, Islamic, Mediterranean and European history. Classic Essays in Jewish History is a library reference collection that makes available the most important articles and research papers on the development of Jewish communities across Europe and the Middle East. By reprinting together in chronologically-themed volumes material from a widespread range of sources, many difficult to access, especially those drawn from sources that may never be digitized, this series constitutes a major new resource for libraries and scholars. The articles are selected not only for their current role in breaking new ground, but also for their place as seminal contributions to the formation of the field, and their utility in providing access to the subject for students and specialists in other fields. A number of articles not previously published in English will be specially translated for this series. Classic Essays in Jewish History provides comprehensive coverage of its subject. Each volume in the series focuses on a particular time-period and is edited by an authority on that field. The collection is planned to consist of 10 thematically ordered volumes, each containing a specially-written introduction to the subject, a bibliographical guide, and an index. All volumes are hardcover and printed on acid-free paper, to suit library needs. Subjects covered include: The Biblical Period The Second Temple Period The Development of Jewish Culture in Spain Jewish Communities in Medieval Central Europe Jews in Medieval England and France Jews in Renaissance Europe Jews in Early Modern Europe Jews under Medieval Islam Jews in the Ottoman Empire and North Africa

Download or read book A Book of Essays Classic Reprint written by S. A. Hirsch and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-19 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Book of Essays At the present time, inquiries into topics of history and literature proceed with enormous strides. The subjects dealt with in these volumes have naturally shared in the general progress. Thus Roger Bacon's Greek Grammar and his Frag ment on Hebrew Grammar has seen the light, and the Books of the Sibylline Oracles have been subjected to further searching investigations since these essays were written, yet my views, as expressed here, have not undergone modifications to such an extent as to necessitate material alterations. The works of recent authors who have submitted these subjects to fresh inquiries are, however, mentioned in the notes under the text.
