Book excerpt: When 14- and 12-year-old sisters embark on a global family adventure, they learn that surviving new cultures and customs is even scarier than surviving middle school. This TRUE, dual POV, coming-of-age journey features maps and images of people and places across the globe. "THANKS FOR RUINING MY LIFE!" Delaney's eighth-grade dreams crumble when her parents announce their "global family field trip." While her younger sister, Riley, is thrilled to ditch middle school for world school, Delaney cringes at trading parties and friends for a passport and 24/7 family time. While Riley researches bungee jumping and packing tips, Delaney must decide whether to continue the silent treatment or embrace this adventure. What about school? Forget acing science and math, the only way to pass this class is to survive: scam artists, monster cockroaches, deadly stingers, projectile vomiting, public nudity, and toilet catastrophes. And those lessons aren't in their textbooks. Each passport stamp is a real-life social studies lesson in new religions and new rules--resulting in so many awkward family moments. But when an itinerary mistake puts the family's freedom at risk, they learn the most valuable lesson of their lives. Trapped together in their parents' mid-life crisis, will the sisters survive this global adventure? And will non-stop family time turn them into friends? Or enemies?

Book excerpt: Happiness is big business. Books, consultants, psychologists, organizations, and even governments tout happiness secrets that are backed by scientific findings. The problem is that all of this science is done by and for cis white men. And some of the most vocal of these happiness experts were announcing that women could become happier by espousing "traditional" values and eschewing feminism. Skeptical of this hypothesis, Ariel Gore took a deep dive into the optimism industrial complex, reading the history, combing the research, attending the conferences, interviewing the thought leaders, and exploring her own and her friends' personal experiences and desires. Fuck Happiness is a nuanced, thoughtful examination of what happiness means and to whom, how it's played a role in defining modern gender roles and power structures, and how we can all have a more empowered relationship with the pursuit of joy in our lives.

Book Club Red

  • Author : Diane P. Koenker

Download or read book Club Red written by Diane P. Koenker and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2013-04-24 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bolsheviks took power in Russia 1917 armed with an ideology centered on the power of the worker. From the beginning, however, Soviet leaders also realized the need for rest and leisure within the new proletarian society and over subsequent decades struggled to reconcile the concept of leisure with the doctrine of communism, addressing such fundamental concerns as what the purpose of leisure should be in a workers' state and how socialist vacations should differ from those enjoyed by the capitalist bourgeoisie. In Club Red, Diane P. Koenker offers a sweeping and insightful history of Soviet vacationing and tourism from the Revolution through perestroika. She shows that from the outset, the regime insisted that the value of tourism and vacation time was strictly utilitarian. Throughout the 1920s and '30s, the emphasis was on providing the workers access to the "repair shops" of the nation's sanatoria or to the invigorating journeys by foot, bicycle, skis, or horseback that were the stuff of "proletarian tourism." Both the sedentary vacation and tourism were part of the regime’s effort to transform the poor and often illiterate citizenry into new Soviet men and women.Koenker emphasizes a distinctive blend of purpose and pleasure in Soviet vacation policy and practice and explores a fundamental paradox: a state committed to the idea of the collective found itself promoting a vacation policy that increasingly encouraged and then had to respond to individual autonomy and selfhood. The history of Soviet tourism and vacations tells a story of freely chosen mobility that was enabled and subsidized by the state. While Koenker focuses primarily on Soviet domestic vacation travel, she also notes the decisive impact of travel abroad (mostly to other socialist countries), which shaped new worldviews, created new consumer desires, and transformed Soviet vacation practices.

Book Recreating First Contact

Download or read book Recreating First Contact written by Joshua A. Bell and published by Smithsonian Institution. This book was released on 2013-11-06 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recreating First Contact explores themes related to the proliferation of adventure travel which emerged during the early twentieth century and that were legitimized by their associations with popular views of anthropology. During this period, new transport and recording technologies, particularly the airplane and automobile and small, portable, still and motion-picture cameras, were utilized by a variety of expeditions to document the last untouched places of the globe and bring them home to eager audiences. These expeditions were frequently presented as first contact encounters and enchanted popular imagination. The various narratives encoded in the articles, books, films, exhibitions and lecture tours that these expeditions generated fed into pre-existing stereotypes about racial and technological difference, and helped to create them anew in popular culture. Through an unpacking of expeditions and their popular wakes, the essays (12 chapters, a preface, introduction and afterward) trace the complex but obscured relationships between anthropology, adventure travel and the cinematic imagination that the 1920s and 1930s engendered and how their myths have endured. The book further explores the effects - both positive and negative - of such expeditions on the discipline of anthropology itself. However, in doing so, this volume examines these impacts from a variety of national perspectives and thus through these different vantage points creates a more nuanced perspective on how expeditions were at once a global phenomenon but also culturally ordered.
