Book excerpt: Data suggest that exposure to secondhand smoke can result in heart disease in nonsmoking adults. Recently, progress has been made in reducing involuntary exposure to secondhand smoke through legislation banning smoking in workplaces, restaurants, and other public places. The effect of legislation to ban smoking and its effects on the cardiovascular health of nonsmoking adults, however, remains a question. Secondhand Smoke Exposure and Cardiovascular Effects reviews available scientific literature to assess the relationship between secondhand smoke exposure and acute coronary events. The authors, experts in secondhand smoke exposure and toxicology, clinical cardiology, epidemiology, and statistics, find that there is about a 25 to 30 percent increase in the risk of coronary heart disease from exposure to secondhand smoke. Their findings agree with the 2006 Surgeon General's Report conclusion that there are increased risks of coronary heart disease morbidity and mortality among men and women exposed to secondhand smoke. However, the authors note that the evidence for determining the magnitude of the relationship between chronic secondhand smoke exposure and coronary heart disease is not very strong. Public health professionals will rely upon Secondhand Smoke Exposure and Cardiovascular Effects for its survey of critical epidemiological studies on the effects of smoking bans and evidence of links between secondhand smoke exposure and cardiovascular events, as well as its findings and recommendations.

The database enables users to explore the data and studies supporting the conclusions in the report. Book excerpt: "The purpose of this thesis was to review recent literature concerning passive, or involuntary, smoking by nonsmokers and worker health and performance. While few articles relate specifically to the health and performance of the worker exposed to environmental tobacco smoke, several exist that examine the effects on performance and physiological reactions. A few articles have even tried to link passive smoking to lung cancer, with mixed results. Relative to task performance, a definite negative effect does seem to exist due to the smoky atmsphere resulting from the combustion of tobacco in an unventilated room. However, researchers are uncertain whether some constituent of the smoke, such as carbon monoxide, is the cause, or if subjects are simply distracted by the presence of smoke. The annoyance and irritation caused by environmental tobacco smoke is an individual matter. Some people are annoyed and irritated by very small amounts of smoke; perhaps this irritation is a matter of principle in some cases. Others are able to work without irritation or annoyance with larger quantities of smoke in the environment. Research on cancer risk from passive smoking is mixed but shows and increased, but sometimes slight, risk of cancer among nonsmoking wives of smoking husbands. Increased risk ranges from a ten percent increased risk in an American study to a two-fold risk in a Japanese study. Lung functinoning has also been explored relative to the small-airways in the lungs of exposed nonsmokers. Dysfunction of the small-airways of nonsmokers has been found to be as high as that of an individual who smokes up to ten cigarettes per day. Researchers are still not in agreement as to the best method of measuring the amount of pollulion caused from environmental tobacco smoke, although the bulk of the literature seems to focus on levels of CO as the preferred unit of measure. Recently, however, several researchers have argued that nicotine and cotinine in the urine and saliva are superior measures. Ways of dealing with the problem of environmental tobacco smoke are mentioned, and future research considerations are suggested"--Document.

This evidence is relevant to understanding how smoking causes disease, to identifying those who may be particularly susceptible, and to assessing the potential risks of tobacco products.
