Book Why Civil Resistance Works

Download or read book Why Civil Resistance Works written by Erica Chenoweth and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2011-08-09 with total page 451 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than a century, from 1900 to 2006, campaigns of nonviolent resistance were more than twice as effective as their violent counterparts in achieving their stated goals. By attracting impressive support from citizens, whose activism takes the form of protests, boycotts, civil disobedience, and other forms of nonviolent noncooperation, these efforts help separate regimes from their main sources of power and produce remarkable results, even in Iran, Burma, the Philippines, and the Palestinian Territories. Combining statistical analysis with case studies of specific countries and territories, Erica Chenoweth and Maria J. Stephan detail the factors enabling such campaigns to succeed and, sometimes, causing them to fail. They find that nonviolent resistance presents fewer obstacles to moral and physical involvement and commitment, and that higher levels of participation contribute to enhanced resilience, greater opportunities for tactical innovation and civic disruption (and therefore less incentive for a regime to maintain its status quo), and shifts in loyalty among opponents' erstwhile supporters, including members of the military establishment. Chenoweth and Stephan conclude that successful nonviolent resistance ushers in more durable and internally peaceful democracies, which are less likely to regress into civil war. Presenting a rich, evidentiary argument, they originally and systematically compare violent and nonviolent outcomes in different historical periods and geographical contexts, debunking the myth that violence occurs because of structural and environmental factors and that it is necessary to achieve certain political goals. Instead, the authors discover, violent insurgency is rarely justifiable on strategic grounds.

Book excerpt: Passive resistance, or nonviolent action, is quickly growing in popularity today as people realize that violence doesnat work or is not the best way to solve a conflict. Nonviolence is not passivity and it is not inaction; nonviolence is confrontational and dangerous. Nonviolence provides even more weapons to the activists; its weapons are political, economical, and social; these weapons come from the innate power that belongs to all people, and these weapons can never be taken away. These weapons can be applied to any situation and have a higher success rate than violence. I have applied these techniques myself with great success. This book covers everything from the history of nonviolence, violence, and methods and weapons of nonviolence, to persuasive writing and much, much more. With this information you can establish, organize, lead and succeed in a nonviolent confrontation.

Book Induced Resistance for Plant Defense

Download or read book Induced Resistance for Plant Defense written by Dale R. Walters and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2014-10-20 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Induced resistance offers the prospect of broad spectrum, long-lasting and potentially environmentally-benign disease and pest control in plants. Induced Resistance for Plant Defense 2e provides a comprehensive account of the subject, encompassing the underlying science and methodology, as well as research on application of the phenomenon in practice. The second edition of this important book includes updated coverage of cellular aspects of induced resistance, including signalling and defenses, costs and trade-offs associated with the expression of induced resistance, research aimed at integrating induced resistance into crop protection practice, and induced resistance from a commercial perspective. Current thinking on how beneficial microbes induce resistance in plants has been included in the second edition. The 14 chapters in this book have been written by internationally-respected researchers and edited by three editors with considerable experience of working on induced resistance. Like its predecessor, the second edition of Induced Resistance for Plant Defense will be of great interest to plant pathologists, plant cell and molecular biologists, agricultural scientists, crop protection specialists, and personnel in the agrochemical industry. All libraries in universities and research establishments where biological, agricultural, horticultural and forest sciences are studied and taught should have copies of this book on their shelves.

CHAPTER II THE HISTORY OF PASSIVE RESISTANCE: PHILOSOPHERS AND TEACHERS A glance at the list1of the sects whose names have become synonyms for passive resistance will reveal the fact that, without exception, they belong to the Aryan race, the European continent, and the Christian religion. But, although this is undeniably true as regards those organized movements that have played such a prominent part in modern history, the question naturally arises whether the generalization holds true simply because of our limited knowledge of history, or represents a genuine localization in time and space. The available evidence will probably show that the western sects were only slightly influenced by one another in their original enunciation of the doctrine. Hence it appears to have been a spontaneously generated ethical movement within the various parts of Christendom, But despite this independent origin, the question remains whether the limitation of the organized movement to European Christendom was not after all due to general environing conditions of race, religion, and social institutions common to all the various Christian sects. One way to approach this problem is to explore the ancient and Oriental world, in order, by means of an inductive study of the available facts, to arrive at a sound generalization. We shall then know whether we are dealing with a form of personal and social reaction common to humanity, or whether it actually Is peculiar to civilized, European, and modern men, of the Christian faith. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Social Psychology of Passive Resistance: A Thesis The principal purpose of this essay is not historical study, but pmychologdcal analysis and interpretation. And even this psycholog ical attempt is itself directed, not into the labyrinths of individual motime and mental experience, but outward upon social interactions and consequences. Furthermore, we are concerned here with the social sig nificance of a particular attitude and policy on the part of individ uals and groups. This attitude is herein.called passive resistance, and is perhaps sufficiently well understood for the present purpose, although.it will very soon require careful analysis and definition.1 Passive resistancecalls to the mind of the general reader certain queer people who refuse to fight or go to war, and whose eccentricity is looked upon as a sort of aimable weakness, so long as it does not assume proportions embarrassing to the coercive or military enter prises of the State. This last consideration emphasizes the essen tially sociological nature of the present inquiry. Passive resistance is primarily a form of personal reaction to social environment, and by virtue of this very fact it is, at one and the same moment, an intense ly individualistic experience and a superlatively important social phenomenon.
