Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Suicide is always a controversial issue. Among Jews, it is often taboo. Stereotypically, Jews do not commit suicide; certainly, they do not discuss it. Passionate Women, Passive Men: Suicide in Yiddish Literature challenges this perception, exploring the problem of suicide through a series of literary case studies. Hadda investigates the lives of these fictional suicides, asking the question: What could be so wrong in a person's life that suicide—although forbidden by the Jewish religion—would seem preferable? Proceeding from the theoretical standpoint that the psychoanalytic process concerns narratives and their interpretations by an analyst, the author argues that the techniques of psychoanalysis may be fruitfully employed for the study of literature. Through sensitive psychoanalytic attention to narrative nuance, the author reaches surprising conclusions about the function of suicide for the characters she analyzes.

Book excerpt: The now-classic exploration of the role of women and the feminine in Buddhist Tantra The crowning cultural achievement of medieval India, Tantric Buddhism is known in the West primarily for the sexual practices of its adherents, who strive to transform erotic passion into spiritual bliss. Historians of religion have long held that this attempted enlightenment was for men only, and that women in the movement were at best marginal and subordinated and at worst degraded and exploited. In Passionate Enlightenment, Miranda Shaw argues to the contrary and presents extensive evidence of the outspoken and independent female founders of the Tantric movement and their creative role in shaping its distinctive vision of gender relations and sacred sexuality. Including a new preface by the author, this Princeton Classics edition makes an essential work available for new audiences.

Book excerpt: This is a collection of original essays which focuses on the causes, meanings and significance of female suicides in Ming and Qing China. It is the first attempt in English-language scholarship to revise earlier views of female self-destruction that had been shaped by the May Fourth Movement and anti-Confucian critiques of Chinese culture, and to consider the matter of female suicide in the wider context of more recent scholarship on women and gender relations in late imperial China. The essays also reveal the world of tensions, conflicting demands and expectations, and a variety of means by which both women and men made moral sense of their lives in late imperial China. The volume closes with an extensive bibliography of relevant and important Chinese, Japanese, and Western publications related to female suicide in late imperial China.

Book Lonely Passionate and Vulnerable Women

Download or read book Lonely Passionate and Vulnerable Women written by Andrew Callender and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2019-11-11 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the name suggests, Lonely, Passionate, and Vulnerable Women is primarily about the way "today's men" treat and take advantage of women who, by virtue of being lonely and entrapped by the obsession of passion, become easy victims of unscrupulous men who use their dynamic personalities and peculiar situation to captivate women's minds for their own gains and ego. However, the novel is broad-based, and thus covers several significant aspects of everyday life. For example, it illustrates how men who become workaholics have very little time for their wives or partner, and hence, open avenues or expose them to waiting vultures. It also deals with the impact of lack of sexual compatibility as well as the effects of the excessive use of alcohol leading to impotence and how this, too, can cause the woman to become vulnerable. There are, however, some women who do not take everything that vicious men have to give out. Two such women in the book are Marva and Denise. These two women, after having their feelings hurt, went on a vengeful spree against men; taking all that they could get, and eventually joining forces to shatter one of these men, Tom Branche, who was having an affair with them both. The book does show, however, that anyone going after revenge not only succeeds in destroying the intended victim, but also end up destroying themselves as well. Finally, the book provides a summary that opens the eyes of the blind on this sensitive topic. Facts are highlighted that put women in a position to clearly see the course of action they can take to avoid abuse. In fact, some of the issues in the book itself allows them to see how the abuse can and does occur. What makes the book great is that it is not only informative and highlights the issue but goes on to provide solutions.

Download or read book Passionate and Pious written by Monique Moultrie and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2017-12-11 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Passionate and Pious Monique Moultrie explores the impact of faith-based sexual ministries on black women's sexual agency to trace how these women navigate sexuality, religious authority, and their spiritual walk with God. Providing churchwomen a space to candidly discuss these issues, these popular ministries exist largely beyond the traditional church, with dialogues about sex taking place in chat rooms and through text messages, social media, email, and other media. Moultrie foregrounds televangelist Juanita Bynum's construction of the black Christian sexual identity these ministries promote while emphasizing how churchwomen reconcile these prescriptive identities with their individual experiences. What does it mean for senior women to exercise sexual agency when their church standing could be questioned? What does celibacy mean for women who experience same-sex desire while believing that such desire goes against God's will? Advancing a womanist sexual ethics, Moultrie reframes biblical interpretations and conceptions of what constitutes a healthy relationship to provide a basis for sexual decision making that does not privilege monogamy or deny female pleasure, thereby calling on black churchwomen to experience responsible and life-enhancing sex.

Book Men Women Passion and Power

Download or read book Men Women Passion and Power written by Marie Maguire and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2004-08-02 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Psychoanalytic theory has often found it difficult to come to terms with issues of power within gender relations. Both theory and clinical practice have tended to replicate the cultural idealization of men and the denigration of women, splitting masculinity and femininity between the sexes in a way which depletes both. In Men, Women, Passion and Power, Marie Maguire argues that it is only when psychoanalysis integrates the male and female in its theorizing that the possibility of a more balanced and fluid psychological relation between the sexes will emerge. Making detailed use of case material, she introduces the reader to the contemporary debates about sexuality and explores them with sensitivity from a feminist viewpoint. Looking at such topics as false memories of sexual abuse, perverse sexuality, homosexuality, pornography and bulimia, she shows how current thinking is trammelled by sexist, homophobic and culturally biased assumptions about gender identity and sexual orientation. She concludes that only when a feminist perspective has been truly integrated into theory will the psychoanalytic project realize its full radical potential. This edition first published in 2004. Routledge is an imprint of Taylor & Francis, an informa company.

Download or read book Undesirable written by Jennifer Anne Boittin and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2022-11-01 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Archival research into policing and surveillance of migrant women illuminates pressing contemporary issues. Examining little-known policing archives in France, Senegal, and Cambodia, Jennifer Anne Boittin unearths the stories of hundreds of women labeled “undesirable” by the French colonial police and society in the early twentieth century. These “undesirables” were often women traveling alone, women who were poor or ill, women of color, or women whose intimate lives were deemed unruly. To refute the label and be able to move freely, they spoke out or wrote impassioned letters: some emphasized their “undesirable” qualities to suggest that they needed the care and protection of the state to support their movements, while others used the empire’s own laws around Frenchness and mobility to challenge state or societal interference. Tacking between advocacy and supplication, these women summoned intimate details to move beyond, contest, or confound surveillance efforts, bringing to life a practice that Boittin terms “passionate mobility.” In considering how ordinary women pursued autonomy, security, companionship, or simply a better existence in the face of surveillance and control, Undesirable illuminates pressing contemporary issues of migration and violence.

Book excerpt: Beautiful, rebellious Bess Fitzmaurice is mesmerized by Dan McCaffrey, an American of Irish descent who has come to Ireland to aid the Fenian revolt against British tyranny. He appears in her home on May Eve 1865, fleeing British forces. To Bess, Dan is the mythical Donal Ogue, the hero of a famous Irish poem, returned to rescue Ireland--but right now, he is an American Civil War veteran on the run. Bess and her brother, Michael, get Dan to a ship, and they flee to America. In 1865, America is a nation ravaged by four years of Civil War. Bess discovers that among the Irish-American Fenians money and power and patriotism are entangled in bewildering and demoralizing ways, while Dan McCaffrey surrenders to the corruption of New York City politics. The Fenians' invasion of Canada and their goal of holding the English colony hostage for a free Ireland become a hot issue in a power struggle between Democrats and Republicans. When the American federal government double-crosses the Fenians, forcing thousands of Irish Civil War veterans to abandon the Canadian invasion after winning the first battle, acrimony engulfs the movement, leading to feuds, name-calling--and murder. In despair, Bess quits the Fenians and finds love in the arms of former Union General Jonathan Stapleton. Their idyll, however, is soon interrupted by Dan McCaffrey, who forces her to choose between him and her new lover. A Passionate Girl is a riveting novel that takes the reader into a forgotten chapter in Irish-American history and provides an eye-opening look at the devastating impact of America's Civil War.

Download or read book The Women with Passion written by Jane Cherop Sang and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2015-03-03 with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women of faith in pursuit of wisdom! Why was I led to write this book? As I sat down in my living room, doing my daily chores, the Holy Spirit nurtured me and directed me to listen to some CDs for women who spoke at the Wisdom Center in one of the conferences in our church. These women had been used by God mightily that weekend. Gods appointed time and season are perfect; redeem the time because the days are evil. As I listened keenly to every word spoken at that moment, God started teaching me how a woman can be impactful to those around her. A woman of faith has the wisdom and her confidences are in God. After meditating on and focusing on the Lord, the Lord stirred in me a spirit to start drafting a book on women of faith. Great ideas started to flow in my spirit, and one thing led to another. To write a book is not easy, but it requires passion. Thank you for taking the time to read this book. The Holy Spirit is no respecter of persons. Do not ever, ever underestimate what God can do in your life. This could be a new beginning of a new life for you. I pray that as you come across this precious book, you will never be the same again. Believe me, the Bible says let us keep our faith and confidence in him without wavering, for in due season, we shall reap. Because he who has began a good work in us will bring it to completion. His promises are ye and amen, your God will never leave you nor forsake you. Get that in your spirit. I love my fellow women of God who are soldiers of Christ, pressing on toward the plan of God in their lives. They are unshakable and unstoppable in pursuit of the wisdom. They are special in the eyes of God. They carry an anointing that no one else can give other than the creator, God Almighty. I am inspired by these women because their time is spent in Gods presence, wanting to know what God has in store for their future. Time will tell if we tire not lingering in his presence hour after hour. In addition to that, search and read Gods word, praying to see if they are in agreement with him. They are strong, courageous, and victors! And if I may ask, are you one of them? God has put something special in the heart of a woman! Thank you! Celebrate yourselves as a kingdom conqueror. Powerful, isnt it? Praise God.
