Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eleven-year-old Maria considers herself an ordinary girl during a seemingly ordinary time in America when the milkman makes biweekly deliveries, Sunday drives are a regular occurrence, and vacations are spent at a family cabin. Thirty years later as Maria reflects on her childhood memories, she realizes that everything changed after her twelfth birthday when she met an elderly woman. In a collection of six novellas, Stuart Schwartz chronicles the lives of diverse characters as they navigate their way through life surrounded by drama, humor, intrigue, philosophical thoughts, and imaginary fun. Three years after Billy Buttons receives a stuffed lamb as a gift from his mother, he discovers the animal can talk. But the real fun begins when he lets Lambie out of his book bag. In Colonia, Illinois, the neighbors on Orchard Street mostly keep to themselves, except for two couples. Morton and Toni Williams and Ralph and Dawn Schultz are close friends. But when they attend a pyramid-scheme seminar, no one anticipates what comes next. A Wit’s World is a volume of six novellas that highlight the personal experiences and challenges facing a band of characters, each with their own ideas on how to triumph and persevere.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hagiography, or writing about and illustrating the lives of saints, was one of the most creative areas for artistic inspiration in the literature and arts of the Middle Ages. This book explores the sumptuously illustrated saints' lives that were made in medieval Europe. Cynthia Hahn discusses a broad range of manuscripts and other artifacts, many of which are reproduced here, and provides an analysis of their pictorial and narrative structure. Hahn's book is a virtual compendium of images-many rarely published-as well as a learned study that deepens our understanding of the role of various types of saints, the nature of their audience, and the historical moment when individual works were produced. After two informative introductory chapters setting the historical and narrative context of pictorial hagiography, Hahn considers the Lives of Martyrs and Virgins, Bishops, Monks and Abbots, and Kings and Queens, and concludes with an examination of the extraordinary chronicles and illustrations of the lives of saints by the English monk Matthew Paris. She considers such questions as: Why were illustrated saints' lives produced in such great numbers during this period? Why were they illustrated at all given the trouble and expense of such illustration? And to whom did the saints' lives appeal, and how did their readers use them? As she addresses these and other intriguing questions, Hahn traces changes that occurred over time both in the images and the stories, and shows how their creators, mostly the intellectual elite, were finely attuned to audience reception. This important aspect of hagiographic production has received scant attention in the past, and as she considers this issue in light of contemporary narrative theory, Hahn brings us to a fresh appreciation of these intricately illustrated manuscripts and their multiple audiences.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This pioneering study uses an early seventh-century Christian martyr legend to elucidate the culture and society of late antique Iraq. Translated from Syriac into English here for the first time, the legend of Mar Qardagh introduces a hero of epic proportions whose characteristics confound simple classification. During the several stages of his career, Mar Qardagh hunts like a Persian King, argues like a Greek philosopher, and renounces his Zoroastrian family to live with monks high in the mountains of Iraqi Kurdistan. Drawing on both literary and artistic sources, Joel Walker explores the convergence of these diverse themes in the Christian culture of the Sasanian Empire (224-642). Taking the Qardagh legend as its foundation, his study guides readers through the rich and complex world of late antique Iraq.

Book The Liturgy of the Medieval Church

Download or read book The Liturgy of the Medieval Church written by Thomas Heffernan and published by Medieval Institute Publications. This book was released on 2005-04-01 with total page 734 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume seeks to address the needs of teachers and advanced students who are preparing classes on the Middle Ages or who find themselves confounded in their studies by reference to the various liturgies that were fundamental to the lives of medieval peoples. In a series of essays, scholars of the liturgy examine The Shape of the Liturgical Year, Particular Liturgies, The Physical Setting of the Liturgy, The Liturgy and Books, and Liturgy and the Arts. A concluding essay, which originated in notes left behind by the late C. Clifford Flanigan, seeks to open the field, to examine liturgy within the larger and more inclusive category of ritual. The essays are intended to be introductory but to provide the basic facts and the essential bibliography for further study. They approach particular problems assuming a knowledge of medieval Europe but little expertise in liturgical studies per se.

Book Sacred Biography

    Book Details:
  • Author : Thomas J. Heffernan
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 1992-10-01
  • ISBN : 019536001X
  • Pages : 348 pages

Download or read book Sacred Biography written by Thomas J. Heffernan and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1992-10-01 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though medieval "saints' lives" are among the oldest literary texts of Western vernacular culture, they are routinely patronized as "pious fiction" by modern historiography. This book demonstrates that to characterize the genre as fiction is to misunderstand the intentions of medieval authors, who were neither credulous fools nor men blinded by piety. Concentrating on English texts, Heffernan reconstructs the medieval perspective and considers sacred biography in relation to the community for which it was written; identifies the genre's rhetorical practices and purposes; and demonstrates the syncretistic way in which the life of the medieval saint was transformed from oral tales to sacred text. In the process, Heffernan not only achieves a more contextually accurate understanding of the medieval saints' lives, but details a new critical method that has important implications for the practice of textual criticism.
