Book excerpt: Excerpt from Poems of Passion Oh, you who read some song that I have sung - What know you of the soul from whence it sprung? Dost dream the poet ever speaks aloud His secret thought unto the listening crowd? Go take the murmuring sea-shell from the shore - You have its shape, its color - and no more. It tells not one of those vast mysteries That lie beneath the surface of the seas Our songs are shells, cast out by waves of thought; Here, take them at your pleasure; but think not You've seen beneath the surface of the waves, Where lie our shipwrecks, and our coral caves. Book White Heat

Download or read book White Heat written by Brenda Wineapple and published by Anchor. This book was released on 2009-12-01 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: White Heat is the first book to portray the remarkable relationship between America's most beloved poet and the fiery abolitionist who first brought her work to the public. As the Civil War raged, an unlikely friendship was born between the reclusive poet Emily Dickinson and Thomas Wentworth Higginson, a literary figure who ran guns to Kansas and commanded the first Union regiment of black soldiers. When Dickinson sent Higginson four of her poems he realized he had encountered a wholly original genius; their intense correspondence continued for the next quarter century. In White Heat Brenda Wineapple tells an extraordinary story about poetry, politics, and love, one that sheds new light on her subjects and on the roiling America they shared.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among the twelve hundred poems which have emanated from my too prolific pen there are some forty or fifty which treat entirely of that emotion which has been denominated "the grand passion"-love. A few of those are of an extremely fiery character. When I issued my collection known as "Maurine, and Other Poems," I purposely omitted all save two or three of these. I had been frequently accused of writing only sentimental verses; and I took pleasure and pride in presenting to the public a volume which contained more than one hundred poems upon other than sentimental topics. But no sooner was the book published than letters of regret came to me from friends and strangers, and from all quarters of the globe, asking why this or that love poem had been omitted. These regrets were repeated to me by so many people that I decided to collect and issue these poems in a small volume to be called "Poems of Passion." By the word "Passion" I meant the "grand passion" of love. To those who take exception to the title of the book I would suggest an early reference to Webster's definitions of the word.

Download or read book Passion in Verse written by Scott McCray and published by Dog Ear Publishing. This book was released on 2012-09-01 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Passion in Verse: Poetry and Other Musings is a book for real people who aren't afraid to get in touch with their own feelings. I wrote this book from a personal history which has experienced an abundance of emotional climbs and descents, and that has witnessed many miscarriages of fairness and many triumphant moments in numerous arenas. In this book I did my best to paint vivid imagery for the imagination of the reader, each of which will interpret differently: imagery which puts the reader in the skin of and seeing through the eyes of the subject. I didn't write the poems to include catchy rhyming couplets, as that would have eliminated way too many vocabulary choices which would have limited far too greatly exactly what I wanted to convey. If you have ever been in love, felt low, admired the consummate skill of another, had irreplaceable friends, or enjoy just being out of doors in nature's realm, I think you will find something between these covers with which you can identify. And although it may be easy to read these contents in one sitting, I believe you may find it difficult to digest all its messages as quickly.
